Abstract

Postpartum treatments have been used by local women in Indonesia for some time now. One commonly used postpartum treatment is the consumption of a traditional herbal medicine called PHM-1 during the first 40 days after childbirth. In addition, a second medicine known as PHM-2 is taken for days 41-80. However, sufficient scientific evidence about the benefits of this postpartum herbal medicine does not exist. In this study, the antibacterial abilities of PHM-1 and PHM-2 therefore was evaluated and showed positive potential for both. Low IC50 values were obtained against pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Ralstonia pickettii, and Staphylococcus epidermidis and compared with chloramphenicol as a positive control. The antibacterial activity of both PHM-1 and PHM-2 against R. pickettii had the highest inhibitory activity as evidenced by the lowest IC50 values of 11.16 and 6.26 μg/ml, respectively. Furthermore, an in vivo acute toxicity test showed that PHM-1 produced a low LD50 value of 3.28 g/kg BW for both of male and female mice. These results support the use of both PHM-1 and PHM-2 as antibacterial treatments for postpartum women.

Abstract

Tempe and tofu are the main product of soybean commonly consumed as a daily food for the people of Indonesia. So far, soybean is well known to be a source of protein. Indeed, soybean contains secondary metabolites resulting in antioxidant activities. Antioxidants would nullify the negative effect of reactive oxygen and, as a result, could improve and maintain human health. Improvement of awareness of Indonesian people that soybean is good for human health promotion and maintenance could be a trigger to enlarge the soybean production area and increase national soybean production. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of some improved soybean varieties. The observation was done in three replicates, and the standard deviation was made. The results of the present study showed that total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, as measured by ABTS and DPPH, varied among the soybean seeds tested. The variability of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity was not caused by different seed sizes but by the different genetic background encoding for other phenotypes than the seed size. In general, antioxidant activity is positively correlated to total phenolic content. Demas and Tanggamus showed significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to the rest, including imported soybean. Therefore, Demas and Tanggamus could be used as better food sources for human health.

Abstract

Smoking is one of the health problems that is difficult to solve even has become a national and international problem. One of the negative effects of smoking is a decrease in HDL levels in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of HDL levels in active adult smokers aged 31-35 years in RT.04 / RW.01 Mlajah Bangkalan Village. This research is a descriptive study, with a research design using cross sectional design. The variable of this study is the level of HDL in active smokers with a population of 15 respondents selected as samples using total sampling. The data collection method uses a photometer, the data obtained are then presented in a frequency distribution table. The results of research on HDL levels of active smokers mostly low HDL levels less than 60 mg / dl with 11 respondents (73.33%) .This happens because the nicotine contained in cigarette smoke will stimulate the hormone adrenaline which will consequently interfere with fat metabolism which causes HDL levels in the body decrease.
