Abstract

Reading in the EFL context in Indonesia can be generally included in the teaching of reading comprehension. Here, teaching reading aims to improve the skill of the students in comprehending the meaning of the written text. Therefore, knowledge of reading strategies is needed to help students encountering different text types, so that they become more aware of how they learn most effectively. This experimental study was conducted with a purpose to investigate the effectiveness of SBI on reading comprehension achievement in English as a foreign language. The subjects of the study were chosen from Grade X of SMK Islam Gupi Dongko. A set of reading strategies that were delivered in the SBI method trained the students. This study answered these two following research problems: 1) Do students who are taught using Strategy-Based Instruction achieve better in literal reading comprehension than those who are taught using the conventional strategy?, 2) Do students who are taught using Strategy-Based Instruction achieve better in inferential reading comprehension than those who are taught using the conventional strategy?

Abstract

One of the requirements to pass the lecturer certification exam is to attach a TOEFL score. TOEFL itself is an abbreviation of Test of English as a Foreign Language which is used to measure how far a person's English ability is. In the various findings and field observations made, almost all lecturers who will carry out the 2019 TMT lecturer certification at the Ambon State Polytechnic have the same difficulties when they want to face the TOEFL test. Therefore, the Ambon State Polytechnic Community Service Team took the initiative to conduct TOEFL training activities for TMT 2019 lecturers so that they could overcome their difficulties on the TOEFL test by using modules compiled by the team. The results of this service activity show that the English language skills possessed by the lecturers have increased after the training. This can be seen from their pre-test and post-test scores. It is hoped that after going through this activity, they can test their abilities by carrying out the TOEFL test and can penetrate lecturer certification.

Abstract

In learning English, it is clearly seen that students have their own ways and abilities to understand information or learning materials. The method used by students in understanding the information is generally known as learning style. This study aims to identify the dominant learning style used by students in learning English at civil engineering class. This study was survey research. There are two types of learning styles studied. First, it can be seen from the perceptual aspect which has 3 types of learning styles, namely visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Second, learning styles are seen from the social aspect which consists of 2 types, namely groups and individuals. The participants in this study were 248 students briefly divided into 9 classes. In determining the participants, the researcher precisely used a total sampling technique. Furthermore, the researcher used a questionnaire as an instrument to obtain data. The results of the study strongly showed that students used all learning styles, namely visual, auditory, kinesthetic, group, and individual. Based on the data obtained and analyzed, the highest percentage of learning styles for the perceptual aspect is visual with a total percentage of 45.5%. Then, for the social aspect, which gained a percentage of 44.3%. Based on the data obtained in this study, it can be concluded that the learning style of civil engineering students is more dominant using the perceptual learning style compared to the social learning style, and this can be seen from the data presented in this study.

To conduct the research, mixed-methode approach was adopted and the data source was a collection of recordings of the students’ utterances in the classroom and workplace. The study found that there were three forms of code mixing used by the students which included words, phrases, and clauses. The data analysis revealed that there were 39 instances of code mixing in the recordings. These 39 instances comprised of 20 data words code mixing, 14 data phrase code mixing, 11 data lexical need code mixing, and 9 data as a function of comment. In addition. code-mixing patterns within the context of linguistic phenomena, specifically focusing on three predominant models: Model of Verb (MoV), Model of Noun (MoN), and Model of Adjective (MoA). The research reveals a total of 158 instances of code-mixing across these models. The results indicated that Model of Verb (MoV) exhibited the highest frequency, constituting 62.03% of the total code-mixing observed. In contrast, Model of Noun (MoN) represented 27.22% of the code-mixing instances, while Model of Adjective (MoA) accounted for 10.75% of the overall code-mixing phenomena. This study sheds light on the use of code mixing in the context of English language teaching and provides new insights into the reasons behind its occurrence in the workplace.

Abstract

The new era confronts teachers with new tasks and obligations. The use of advanced technology has greatly improved the tradition of teaching English. Technology offers several options, such as making teaching more exciting and efficient. Technology is one of the most powerful drivers of social and linguistic change. As a result, it is necessary to use a learning medium that encourages students to be more enthusiastic about studying. This study intends to apply learning media with technology-assisted to students of SD Negeri Rutong, while also describing assessment media from professionals and users. The development approach utilized is Design and Development with the ADDIE research model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The results obtained in this research are 1) Interactive multimedia named "Oxford Let’s Go for Young Learners"; 2) Media expert assessment 89,5%, material experts 91,7%, learning experts 92,4% based on the three assessments then the developed media belongs to the category of "Excellent"; 3) The assessment of 21 students gets a percentage of 74.8% in the category of "Good" which shows students satisfied with the developed media as a medium in learning English. However, further research is needed to determine the usefulness of multimedia use as a learning tool.

Abstract

The development of parallel corpora plays a crucial role in the fields of translation studies, computational linguistics, and comparative linguistics. While significant parallel corpora have been developed for major languages like English, the availability of such resources for Indonesian-English translation research remains limited. This study aims to develop a comprehensive Indonesian-English parallel corpus, specifically designed to aid translation research and enhance linguistic comparisons between these two languages. The corpus is intended to serve as a foundational resource for further studies on machine translation, linguistic patterns, and cross-linguistic influence. The research adopts a corpus-driven methodology, where the corpus is compiled from diverse sources, including literary texts, news articles, academic papers, and everyday discourse, to ensure a broad representation of language use. The corpus is annotated for both syntax and semantics, with a focus on aligning sentence structures and identifying key linguistic features in both languages. The analysis of the corpus reveals significant differences and similarities in sentence structure, word order, and translation equivalence between Indonesian and English. The findings highlight the potential of the corpus to facilitate various types of linguistic research and translation studies. It serves as a valuable tool for enhancing the quality of machine translation systems and provides insights into the challenges of translating between Indonesian and English.
