Abstract

Many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially young beginning-level students with limited exposure to English, struggle to speak the language fluently. However, research specifically examining the obstacles to speaking skill development among young EFL learners is lacking, particularly in regions where English has no official status. This study explored Indonesia EFL teachers' perceptions of factors contributing to early primary school students' difficulties with spoken English. The goal was to establish a foundation for further research and pedagogical improvements.  A questionnaire with Likert-scale ratings and open-ended questions was given to 194 teachers from 70 Indonesia public and private primary schools. Quantitative and qualitative analyses identified patterns and rationales in the teachers' judgments of sources of students' speaking struggles. Pronunciation, vocabulary gaps, grammar, lack of practice, and anxiety were most frequently cited as moderate to substantial challenges. Teaching experience and school type influenced perceptions of anxiety's role and scaffolding orientations. The findings offer initial insight into context-specific developmental and environmental constraints on young Indonesia learners' progress in speaking English. Future targeted research can build on this exploratory platform to inform responsive instructional interventions during this critical period of language acquisition

Abstract

Based on observations conducted at the Muhammadiyah Kepong Guidance Center, Malaysia. One of the causes of the problems faced is learning media that is less interesting and interactive. Many teachers still use traditional approaches that make students feel bored and less motivated, and have a negative view of mathematics subjects that are claimed to be difficult and confusing. The objectives of this study are 1) to analyze the effect of the counting funnel media used in students' numeracy skills. 2) to evaluate the improvement of mathematical numeracy skills in the multiplication material of grade III students at the Muhammadiyah Kepong Guidance Center, Malaysia. The results of the analysis show that the sig value (2-tailed) is 0.000, which means it is less than 0.05. Thus, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. These results indicate that the counting funnel media has a significant positive impact on improving students' numeracy skills, especially in multiplication material. The findings of this study confirm that the use of the counting funnel media has an effect on students' numeracy skills in grade III of the Muhammadiyah Kepong Guidance Center, Malaysia, thus indicating that the use of this media is very effective in improving students' numeracy skills.

Abstract

Interview results revealed that the learning participation of grade III students was low caused by a lack of learning media that was less interesting, causing students to quickly feel bored and less involved in learning, especially flat material. The limited variety of learning media made it difficult for students to understand the concepts in depth, resulting in their low activity levels in learning. The aim of this research is to evaluate how effective the use of bulletin board media is in enhancing active participation among third-grade students in learning about flat shapes. The research sample consisted of 10 students, and the method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in 2 cycles, each consisting of the stages of planning, application, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through interviews and tests to measure the level of student activity before and after the use of bulletin board media. The results indicated that the use of bulletin board media in teaching flat shapes significantly increased student engagement. The percentage of student activity rose from 65% in the first cycle to 87.5% in the second cycle. Thus, bulletin board media proved to be effective in enhancing active student participation and helping them better understand the concepts of flat shapes.

Abstract

This study investigates the realization of language policy and language ideology reflected in the linguistic landscape of Medan City's public space. Using a mixed methods approach and an explanatory sequential design, this study integrates quantitative data from the documentation of 300 written texts in five sub-districts and qualitative data from interviews with stakeholders and analysis of policy documents. The results show the dominance of Indonesian (42.7%), followed by multilingual texts (34.7%) and texts in foreign languages such as English and Mandarin (18.3%). There is a discrepancy between the national language policy and linguistic practices in the public sphere, especially in the commercial sector where many foreign languages are used for pragmatic economic reasons. Three dominant language ideologies were found, namely language nationalism, economic pragmatism, and ethnic identity, which compete with each other in influencing language practices. This research demonstrates the dialectical relationship between language policy, language ideology and linguistic practice, and emphasizes the importance of an inclusive and adaptive policy approach to the linguistic diversity of multiethnic societies. The findings contribute to the development of a more contextualized and effective theory of linguistic landscapes and language policy practices.

Abstract

This study conducts a pragmatic analysis of how Detik.com's editorial texts framed the prolonged controversy surrounding Gus Miftah's "Goblok" remark to an iced tea seller. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology with documentation techniques, the research specifically examines three pragmatic elements: (1) speech acts (locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary), (2) conversational implicatures, and (3) presuppositions in media discourse. The findings reveal that Detik.com strategically employed these pragmatic devices to construct particular narrative frames, significantly influencing readers' interpretations of the incident. Notably, the analysis demonstrates how assertive, directive, and expressive speech acts were utilized to shape public perception, while carefully crafted implicatures and presuppositions reinforced specific ideological positions. Furthermore, this study evaluates these media framing strategies through the lens of Islamic communication ethics, highlighting critical tensions between journalistic framing techniques and Islamic values that emphasize fairness (al-'adl), truthfulness (as-sidq), and prudent speech (hifzh al-lisan). The research contributes to both media studies and Islamic communication ethics by providing empirical evidence of how pragmatic devices operate in digital journalism and offering normative reflections on responsible media practices in Muslim contexts. Practical implications suggest the need for media literacy initiatives to help audiences critically engage with framed content.
