Abstract

The plastics recycling industry plays a vital role in reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste. However, challenges such as high operating costs and low profit margins are hindering its growth. This article explores the application of lean production systems as a potential solution to improve operational efficiency and profitability in this industry. By reducing waste at various stages of production, such as energy consumption, raw materials and production time, lean has been shown to reduce operating costs by up to 10% in large-scale production. In addition, Lean enables companies to increase production capacity without significantly increasing costs. Despite the challenges associated with initial investment and organisational culture change, the long-term benefits of implementing Lean, such as increased profit margins and competitiveness, make it a highly relevant strategy for the plastics recycling industry.

Abstract

The strategic implementation of alternative raw materials has emerged as a pivotal approach to enhance cost efficiency and sustainability within the craft industry. This study employs a literature review approach to examine the use of local materials, organic waste, and recycled materials as substitutes for conventional inputs in MSME production. The findings indicate that replacing traditional raw materials can reduce production costs by up to 50% while enhancing product competitiveness in environmentally friendly markets. This innovation also generates social impact through the empowerment of local communities and the establishment of shorter supply chains. Nevertheless, challenges such as supply instability, technical limitations, and a paucity of regulatory support persist as significant obstacles. Consequently, a collaborative effort among government entities, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), designers, and research institutions is imperative to fortify the sustainable innovation ecosystem. The study's findings indicate that the adoption of alternative material innovations is not only conducive to economic efficiency but also serves as a catalyst for more inclusive and environmentally sustainable development.

Abstract

Product diversification is a crucial strategy for micro enterprises in the fisheries sector to enhance profitability, efficiency, and business sustainability. Heavy reliance on selling fresh fish often leads to unstable income among fishermen and fish processors due to price fluctuations and perishability risks. This study aims to analyze the impact of product diversification on the profitability and efficiency of micro-scale fisheries enterprises using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The analysis was conducted by reviewing literature from international sources such as FAO, UNEP, UNIDO, and OECD, as well as empirical studies on innovation, operational efficiency, and fishery waste management. The findings indicate that product diversification can increase income by 20–40%, expand market reach, reduce raw material waste, and create a more efficient and environmentally friendly production system. Moreover, diversification generates significant socio-economic impacts, including new employment opportunities, enhanced skills among coastal communities, and improved competitiveness of local products in modern markets. However, the success of diversification largely depends on access to finance, technical skills, and market connectivity. Therefore, collaboration between entrepreneurs, government, cooperatives, and financial institutions is essential to achieve sustainable product diversification in the fisheries sector.
