Abstract

The activity of speaking or known as public speaking is a scary thing for students. Although they are often asked to practice presentations in front of the class, the technique of delivering public speaking is often not paid attention to. There are several techniques that should be mastered in public speaking so that the delivery can be conveyed well to the audience. This time, the implementation of PKM aims to provide knowledge about public speaking skills, improve speaking skills, mentally prepare students to speak in front of crowds, and equip students to enter lectures or work.  The method presented in this activity is lecture and practice.with 20 students from SMK Bina Nusa Slawi. Students are also provided with modules to make it easier when delivering and students can also repeat the material at home. Students are also given directions regarding the correct way of presentation in Indonesian and English in accordance with the rules of public speaking. In addition to theory and practice in the classroom. Students are also directed to observe several public speaking figures through Youtube channel. In general, community service activity at SMK Bina Nusa Slawi are going well. Students' enthusiasm is extraordinary, as evidenced by the fact that 80 percent of students believe that having public speaking skills and increasing self-confidence are important. Students feel helped by this activity because they gain knowledge about public speaking and presentation techniques that can be used to support presentations in class or as a provision for later in the world of work.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is intended to determine the factors that cause student anxiety in speaking in English, and solutions to overcome this anxiety. This research was carried out at the vocational campus Harapan Bersama Polytechnic in 11 study programs with 177 participants. This research used qualitative method. The data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The results of the questionnaire analysis show that the highest cause of anxiety is non-teacher feedbacks and the solution to overcome the anxiety problem is individual preferences. In addition, based on the interview analysis, the cause of anxiety was the influence of regional dialect spoken in northern Java coastal areas (Tegal, Brebes, Slawi, Pemalang, Bumiayu, Cirebon). Lecturers and educational institutions must consider the curriculum and students’ psychological condition, so it is hoped that it can reduce students’ anxiety level.Keywords:  problem solution; psychological condition; speaking anxiety        Abstrak. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kecemasan mahasiswa dalam berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris, dan solusi untuk mengatasi kecemasan tersebut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di kampus vokasi Politeknik Harapan Bersama di 11 program studi dengan 177 subjek. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara. Hasil analisis kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa penyebab kecemasan tertinggi adalah tidak adanya koreksi dari dosen, dan solusi untuk mengatasi masalah kecemasan tersebut adalah preferensi individu. Selain itu, berdasarkan analisis wawancara, penyebab kegelisahan adalah pengaruh dialek daerah, yaitu dialek pesisir Jawa bagian utara (Tegal, Brebes, Slawi, Pemalang, Bumiayu, Cirebon). Dosen dan institusi pendidikan harus mempertimbangkan kurikulum dan kondisi psikologis mahasiswa, sehingga diharapkan dapat mengurangi tingkat kecemasan mahasiswa.Kata kunci: solusi masalah; kondisi psikologis; kecemasan berbicara

Abstract

Audio-Visual-Aids (AVA) media is a type of media that has long been acknowledged as a teaching aid in foreign language contexts. However, its uses are varied greatly from teacher to teacher depending on the content, inventiveness, classroom needs, and benefits approaches in language learning. Thus, the current research focused on the investigation of the analysis of vocabulary acquisition in the form of nouns and word spellings. In addition, the researcher also determined the influences of the use of the media on learners’ attitudes. A quantitative pre-experimental research approach in a one-group pre-test post-test design was performed involving 35 participants. AVA media was given within four meetings in the form of PowerPoint slides completed with original audio dubbing and fifteen images representing “Things in My Room”. To get further looks at their attitude, the participants also completed a questionnaire responding to 4 Likert Scales regarding their experiences. The analysis was reported to find out the average scores and initial hypotheses using a t-test on two main focuses with a 0.05 significance level. Findings showed a positive significant difference in the average scores of students’ vocabulary acquisition in the pre-test (7.66) and post-test (12.37) or 12.37 7.66. Scores of the tcoun reached higher than the ttable or 18,56438 2,021. Most of the students agreed and strongly agreed, that learning with AVA media brought some benefits to their learning experiences, particularly in the context of Vocabulary Acquisition.

Abstract

Technology using multimedia assistance is expected to be able to boost some changes both in the classroom atmosphere in general and individual in particular either cognitive (learning outcomes) or affective (learning attitudes). One of learning media that is well-known among users in education is multimedia presentations or Power Point which combine text, graphics, images, photos, audio, videos, and animation in an integrated manner. One of learning tools featuring those conveniences is Genially. The current study was preliminary in nature regarding the use of Genially online media presentation and to investigate with respect its influence on self-confidence among male and female students. The study focused on one skill of language in delivering selected topic or idea using English. Using a quantitative approach, this study involved 62 students consisting of 42 males and 20 females of sophomore students from one vocational college in a small city in Indonesia. To determine level of self-confidence, students were given a questionnaire responding 12 statements in 4 answer scales. Output of One Way Anova and regression test calculation showed that the use of PowerPoint Genially influenced self-confidence for both genders. Even though this media was capable to lead more pleasant and enjoyable learning atmosphere, the influence performed by the variables was considered less significant. This means that students still feel less confident to use oral English in delivering selected topics to their friends in the class.

Abstract

Currently, small businesses in Tegal and the surrounding areas are not proficient in English. Frequently, difficulties in communication hinder the sale of products in foreign markets.The new idea's growth and improvement is being hindered by numerous challenges. The aim of this community service initiative is to support individuals in developing their language skills, particularly in the widely-used English language. Twenty small businesses (MSME) known as UMKM from Brebes, Tegal City/Regency, and Pemalang participated in the event, showcasing products with product export potential (culinary, craft and fashion). The English language training consists of four stages: acquiring new vocabulary, applying the vocabulary, engaging in verbal communication, and composing product descriptions. The participants benefited from the training session by enhancing their vocabulary (100 percent), oral communication abilities (233 percent), and confidence in public speaking without relying on a script. Furthermore, it showed them how to compose product descriptions in English for social media marketing.

Abstract

  Komunikasi sangat penting untuk menunjang pelayanan prima pada saat bekerja, terutama dalam penguasaan bahasa asing seperti bahasa internasional yang umum digunakan, contohnya bahasa Inggris. Selain skill dan pengetahuan, guna menunjang kemampuan komunikasi, siswa juga perlu diajarkan dasar-dasar bahasa Inggris pariwisata (English for Tourism). Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keterampilan speaking dan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris, menumbuhkan motivasi siswa SMKN 1 Tegal untuk belajar English for tourism, serta memberikan pengetahuan serta wawasan tentang pelayanan kepariwisataan. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat dilakukan di SMKN 1 Tegal dengan diikuti oleh siswa Program Studi Perhotelan sebanyak 79 orang. Kegiatan ini berupa pelatihan kecakapan bahasa Inggris pariwisata dengan menggunakan metode ceramah dan role play. Terdapat tiga tahap dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan ini yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan berlangsung dengan lancar dan peserta mengikuti kegiatan dengan semangat dan antusias. Berdasarkan hasil perhitungan pre-test dan post-test, dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dapat meningkatkan keterampilan siswa SMKN 1 Tegal.

Abstract

Stereotypes about domestic routines in the kitchen, wells, and mattresses are strongly associated with married women. This has been occurred for long time. Nowadays, technological advancement and developing digital capabilities are essential not only among students and blue-collars, but also housewives. Since most individual own a smartphone or tablet, he or she should be able to use the technology and continue improving their digital literacy. However, among housewives, its use and utilization are still limited to entertainment, socializing, and making friends in social media. This time, Community Service Program (PKM) activities led to the formation of counseling and education about the importance of increasing digital literacy with the purpose of improving digital literacy skills and the use of Android-based English learning apps. This activity involved approximately 50 housewives as parents and their children from PAUD Alam Nur Cendekia. The session began with a description of the importance of continuing to improve literacy skills, which was preceded by an introduction of using Google Forms to write and share ideas or daily experiences through the links provided. In addition, the mothers were shown how to install, explore, and practice using an android-based English learning application called ENGLISH FOR KIDS. As a result, this can facilitate their children in learning English in a more entertaining way. Subjects participated in the session with enthusiasm and passion. This shows that the implementation of Community Service Program (PKM) ran smoothly in accordance with the above aim.

Abstract

In order to increase students' confidence in speaking activities, it is necessary to be equipped with pronunciation. With sufficient pronunciation, the speaking practiced by students becomes acceptable and well understood. One of the learning media that provides pronunciation facilities is the website www.eslfast.com. Students can choose learning materials from basic to advanced levels. The advantage of this website is that there are various choices of text dialogues and monologues. PKM was held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 10:00-12:00 WIB at SMK Karya Bhakti, Brebes using lecture and practical methods. Students are introduced to and also practices related to the use of eslfast.com website using their respective gadgets. The enthusiasm of students in the PKM activity was high, around 85% of students thought the importance of learning pronunciation using the website. It is hoped that this PKM activity will increase students' motivation to learn pronunciation. At the end of the session students were given an additional demonstration of SEFT Hypnotherapy which was beneficial for physical and spiritual health.

Abstract

Self-awareness is predominant for every individual, including current situation in particular, where Covid-19 outbreak has globally hit people. The attitude is also expected to be experienced by every student in all levels. The facts that there are still many students who do not realize the importance of having self-awareness in maintaining and implementing health protocols during learning from home or online learning. Accordingly, Community Service Program (PKM) team from Politeknik Harapan Bersama conducted virtual education. The program was carried out with the aim of introducing and building self-awareness among students at MI Darul Hikam Cirebon in implementing health protocols in everyday life. Storytelling was chosen as the method to develop children's affective (feeling), social, and cognitive (appreciation) aspects to raise the awareness. A total of 100 of 6th grade students and 3 homeroom teachers from the school participated in the agenda. The storytelling began with brainstorming the title and several pictures related to the situation before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Core activities were dedicated to classically perform the 5M movement (Wear Masks, Wash hands with soap and water, Physical Distancing, Reduce Mobility and Avoid crowd) in bilingual. The enthusiasm was shown by the students in demonstrating the movements several times. They were able to mention sequent 5M movement in good English pronunciation. In addition, the students virtually practiced of washing hands and wearing masks well. This shows that the implementation of Community Service Program (PKM) ran smoothly in accordance with the above aim.

Abstract

PKM yang dilaksanakan pada Senin, 23 Mei 2022 pukul 09.00-11.00 bertempat di SMK Karya Bhakti Brebes bertujuan untuk meningkatkan vocabulary siswa dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran film yang diambil dari Youtube. Subjek berjumlah 23 orang siswa yang berasal dari jurusan Teknik Komputer Jaringan (TKJ). Dalam kegiatan tersebut juga dilengkapi dengan pretest dan posttest, dengan nilai rata-rata pretest untuk picture identification 7 dan post test-nya 8,17, nilai rata-rata pretest untuk word meaning 3,21 dan posttesnya 7,56 serta nilai rata-rata pretest untuk speeling 4,26 dan posttestnya 6,26. Diharapkan dengan adanya kegiatan PKM ini dapat memotivasi siswa untuk meningkatkan vocabulary dengan media film Youtube yang dapat ditonton kapanpun dan dimanapun oleh siswa. Â
