Abstract

Curculigo pilosa is traditionally used in herbal medicine. This study aims to provide information on the secondary metabolites present in C. pilosa rhizomes powder, considering the growing interest in ethnomedicines in recent times. The rhizomes of C. pilosa were purchased from markets around Ogere, Ogun State, Nigeria. They were authenticated by a botanist, after which the rhizomes were washed and extracted using ethanol. The phytochemical composition and metabolomic profiles of the ethanolic extracts of C. pilosa were determined using gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) methods. The results showed that the ethanolic extracts of C. pilosa had higher concentrations of phenols (9.27 ± 0.55 mg GAE/g), alkaloids (6.22 ± 1.95 g/100g), flavonoids (0.66 ± 0.05 g/100g), and saponins (0.51 ± 0.02 g/100g), but lower concentrations of glycosides (0.06 ± 0.01 g/100g), steroids (0.20 ± 0.02 g/100g), and tannins (0.09 ± 0.01 g/100g). The twenty-one bioactive compounds found in the extract include tetraethyl silicate (C₈H₂₀O₄Si), benzene, 1,2-dimethoxy- (C₈H₁₀O₂), 5-dodecene, (Z)- (C₁₂H₂₄), 7-tetradecene, (E)- (C₁₄H₂₈), spirohexane-1-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester (C₉H₁₄O₂), 1-dodecanol, 2-octyl- (C₂₀H₄₂O), formaldehyde, methyl (2-propynyl) hydrazone (C₅H₈N₂), D-allose (C₆H₁₂O₆), cyclohexane, 1R-acetamido-2cis,4trans-bis(acetoxy)-3trans-azido- (C₁₂H₂₂N₄O₅), 5-octadecene, (E)- (C₁₈H₃₆), acetamide, 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)- (C₁₁H₁₅NO₃), cyclopentanol, 1-(1-methylene-2-propenyl)- (C₉H₁₄O), 1,9-tetradecadiene (C₁₄H₂₆), 9-eicosine, (E) (C₂₀H₄₀), hexadecyl propyl ether (C₁₉H₄₀O), 9-octadecene, (E)- (C₁₈H₃₆), linoleic acid ethyl ester (C₂₀H₃₄O), 2-methyl-Z,Z-3,13-octadecadienol (C₁₉H₃₆O), 3-octadecene, (E)- (C₁₈H₃₆), 3-heptadecenal (C₁₇H₃₂O), tricyclo[5.4.3.0(1,8)] tetradecan-6-one, and 4-ethenyl-3-hydroxy-2,4,7,14-tetramethyl (C₂₀H₃₂O₂). Some of the phytocompounds identified in this study are biologically important and exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which may hold therapeutic potential for both animal and human health.

Abstract

Japanese quail has the potential to complement the gap in the protein need of Nigerians. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of varying inclusion levels of Parquetina nigrescens leaf extract (PNLE) on the growth performance, gastrointestinal response, and plasma response of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Fresh leaves of P. nigrescens were harvested. Two-hundred day old of unsexed Japanese quails were weighed and randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatment groups with forty birds at 4 replicates of 10 chicks, respectively. The leaf was obtained by harvesting and blending the leaves, using 50 g of leaves in 1000 mL of water. The treatment were as follows: (T1) which is the control did not receive any PNLE, T2, T3, T4 and T5 administered 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 mL of PNLE per 500 mL of water, respectively, for 6 week of experiment. Feed and water were provided ad libitum and mortality was recorded as it occurred. Parameters measured were performance (feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and gastrointestinal response (Internal organ of GIT and morphometrics). All data were subjected to analysis of variance using Duncan’s multiple range test in SAS (2010) where p value < 0.005 was considered to be statistically significant. For performance, the results showed that the administration of PNLE did not have significant influence (p > 0.05) on all the parameters in the starter and finisher phases. It was observed that when all the parameters were put together without considering the phases, all the parameters considered were not significant (p > 0.05) except feed conversion ratio (FCR) with the highest value being in T1 (5.041) and the lowest value being T4 (3.183). For the gastrointestinal response parameters, the inclusion of PNLE had significant effect (p < 0.05) on crop pH, proventriculus temperature, proventriculus pH, gizzard weight, gizzard temperature, relative gizzard weight, jejunum length and ileum temperature. It was concluded that the inclusion of PNLE had no detrimental effect on growth performance, gastrointestinal response and plasma of Japanese quail, hence it can be used up to 0.4 mL into 500 mL of water.

Abstract

Mineral and nutritive supplements improve animal reproductive performance, especially after Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) infecteds, to establish sustainable food security solutions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of mineral addition, particularly through premix and concentrate booster supplementation, on the body weight gain and reproductive performance of Pote goats in Madura post-infected of foot and mouth disease (FMD). Thirty-six non-pregnant Pote goats that cured from foot and mouth lesion based on veterinarian examination, were divided into three groups and fed differently for 45 days. Group T0 received standard feed comprising 3-4 kg of forage and 300 g of concentrate with a crude protein content of 16–17%, along with ad libitum water. Groups T1 and T2 received standard feed supplemented with 15g/head/day of premix booster and immune booster, respectively. Results showed no significant increase in body weight with supplementation. However, higher blood urea nitrogen and albumin levels were observed in both T1 and T2-supplemented groups. The estrus rate was higher in goats given mineral supplements than with standard feed alone. Although the onset and duration of estrus did not differ significantly, ultrasound scans showed follicular development before estrus synchronization, indicating restoration of the estrus cycle. Overall, mineral addition in feeding post-FMD infected in Pote goats appears to enhance reproductive performance and overall health.

Abstract

This study investigated the antioxidant responses in both plasma and semen of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats following the administration of Parquetina nigrescens leaf extract (PNLE). Twelve clinically healthy WAD bucks were randomly assigned into two groups, each receiving 0 mL (control), and 4 mL of PNLE, respectively, over a 21-day period. Blood and semen samples were collected at baseline and post-treatment to evaluate antioxidant markers including catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lipid peroxidation (LP), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). An antioxidant response was observed. In the control group (0 mL PNLE), significant negative correlations between baseline and post-treatment values—particularly B-Cat. vs. SOD (r= -0.973), B-Cat. vs. MDA (r= -0.990), and B-MDA vs. SOD (r= -0.999)—suggested impaired endogenous antioxidant regulation.  Conversely, administration of 4 mL PNLE significantly enhanced antioxidant status, with strong positive correlations among key indices, notably catalase vs. GPx (r= 0.960**) and TAC vs. SOD (r= 0.999**), reflecting improved systemic antioxidant synergy. Semen antioxidant profiles also showed better enzymatic coordination and reduced lipid peroxidation, indicating the extract’s potential to alleviate reproductive oxidative stress. Overall, Parquetina nigrescens (P. nigrescens) demonstrated marked antioxidative efficacy, supporting both systemic and reproductive redox balance in WAD goats. P. nigrescens leaf extract enhances seminal antioxidant status in WAD goats, thereby promoting reproductive and systemic health. This study recommends its inclusion as a phytogenic additive in goat production, especially in breeding programs prone to oxidative stress.

Abstract

The use of medicinal plants is gaining popularity all over the world; hence there is a need to exploit various plants that could be of economic importance to animal. This study was conducted to investigate the utilization ofCentella asiaticaleaf meal (CALM) as feed additive in layers production. The study was carried out in two phases, the grower phase and layer phase. A total number of 150 birds were used at 10 birds per replicate of 3 replicates per treatments of a total of 5 treatments. The diets contained CALM at five levels of inclusion 0.0 % (control), 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% at grower and layer phases. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design layout. Hence, CALM showed potentials of being natural growth promoting additive. CALM used as additive at 0.2-0.8% inclusion level significantly increased (p0.05) final live weight, weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio at grower and layer phases. 0.6% inclusion of CALM increased packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) and 0.8% inclusion of CALM increased red blood cell (RBC) values at grower phase.At layer phase, 0.6% inclusion of CALM significantly increased (p0.05) PCV and RBC while 0.8% CALM significantly increased (p0.05) haemoglobin (Hb) value but there was significant reduction (p0.05) in total bacteria count (TBC) at the caecum and ileum of birds at grower and layer phases respectively.0.8% CALM inclusion resulted in significantly highest (p0.05) weight of eggs, hen day egg production at 4th, 8th and 12th week in lay. 0.6% inclusion of CALM significantly improved (p0.05) egg weight and yolk weight score at 12th weeks in lay. It can be concluded that the inclusion of CALM in the diets of Isa Brown birds, resulted in better blood profile, haematological and serum biochemical parameters, gut microbial population, egg production and quality of laying hens

Abstract

Yoruba Ecotype Chicken (YEC) is characterized by hardiness, and better adaptation to prevailing tropical environment. However, its poor egg production has hindered its utilization for commercial production. Crossbreeding is a major tool used in improving desired traits in animals. The objective of the study was to evaluate egg production and quality characteristics in YEC and its crosses with Goliath (GG) and Sussex (SS). The study investigated egg production and egg quality characteristics using 120 sixteen-week-old YEC and its crosses. The findings of the study showed that egg parameters were significantly higher (p<0.05) and maturity occurred earlier (154 days) in YECxSS than in YECxYEC (146 days) and other YEC crosses. The study concluded that cross breeding improved egg production of YEC. Crossbred YEC x SS is therefore recommended for egg production in Nigeria.

Abstract

As demand for animal protein rises, raising Japanese quail holds much potentials in bridging the gap. Phytogenics has been reported to have effect on spermiogramic parameters of animals. This research was done to ascertain the spermiogramic parameters of Japanese quails to administration of aqueous solution of egg lime molasses mixture (ELM). Fresh eggs were placed in a dish, followed by 500g of molasses and 1 liter of lime juice. It was then covered for 10 days and the entire mixture was blended. Two hundred day old Japanese quails were assigned to five treatments in a Completely Randomized Design and were subdivided into 4 replicates of 10 birds each. The control (T1) having no administration of ELM, T2 had an inclusion level of 10 mL, T3: 20 mL, T4: 30 mL and T5: 40 mL, all in 500 mL of water.  Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The study was carried out for 49 days. Data were collected on genitalia morphometry and fertilizing potentials. The birds administered 20 mL of ELM had significantly (p <0.05) higher left epididymis weight (0.36 ± 0.05g) compared to the other groups. The inclusion of ELM in the water significantly influenced (p <0.05) left epididymis volume, paired epididymis volume, left epididymis density, paired epididymis density and spermatozoa reserves in the right epididymis. Testosterone values significantly increased (p <0.05) with increased ELM inclusion. It can be concluded that the administration of ELM did not alter growth parameters however birds that received 20 mL per 500 mL of water had the best reproductive parameters.
