Abstract

Abstract

Cold rolling process in metal could increase its strength and hardness, but also induces mechanical anisotropy. This is caused by unresolved plastic strain and microstructural changes caused by plastic deformation exerted by pair of rolls at a relatively low temperature. This research aims to provide understandings on anisotropic and strain rate sensitive behaviour of St-37 mild steel. The microstructure of rolled and unrolled St-37 plate were observed in 3 directions relative to the rolling direction. The cylindrical specimens were then prepared from rolled plate with 33.3% reduction in the orientation of 0o, 45o, and 90o relative to the rolling direction. Specimens were also prepared from unrolled plate as comparison in the same directions. These specimens were then tested in compression loading, first in quasi-static condition, and then by using Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) at the strain rate of 1200 s-1. The experimental results in the form of stress-strain curves are used to obtain the parameters of Simplified Johnson-Cook viscoplastic model. The anisotropy of yield strength in rolled specimens could be seen on both quasi-static and high strain rate condition, where the highest strength found on the specimens perpendicular to the rolling direction. In addition, the effect of cold rolling to the strain rate sensitivity of the material were also captured successfully in this study, where specimens from rolled plate show less strain rate sensitivity compared to the unrolled specimens.

Abstract

The prevalent manual method of replacing ceiling lamps, which often involves climbing on unstable furniture, poses significant safety risks, including potential falls, electrocution, and other severe injuries. This common practice underscores an urgent need for safer and more efficient lamp maintenance solutions in both domestic and commercial settings. This research aims to mitigate these inherent dangers by developing and upgrading conventional ceiling lamp changers into a semi-automatic system. The primary objectives are to enhance the safety, speed, and overall ease of the lamp replacement process, thereby effectively minimizing the risk of user injury. The proposed methodology involves designing a semi-automatic ceiling lamp changer by integrating a control switch mechanism that enables remote rotation of the lamp holder. This innovative approach will facilitate the safe removal and installation of lamps without direct manual contact or the necessity of climbing. Concurrently, comprehensive product cost planning and market-driven pricing strategies will be conducted to ensure the device’s affordability and widespread community acceptance. The successful development of this semi-automatic ceiling lamp changer is anticipated to provide a significantly safer, faster, and more convenient alternative for lamp replacement. This remote-operated design is expected to substantially reduce injury incidents associated with current manual methods. By ensuring affordability and market compatibility, this innovation aims to achieve broad community adoption, ultimately contributing to safer environments for lamp maintenance.

Abstract

A vortex generator is an aerodynamic device installed on wings or other surfaces to enhance lift and delay stall at high angles of attack. This study aims to analyze the effect of vortex generator installation on the aerodynamic characteristics of a straight wing. Numerical simulations were conducted using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method on a three-dimensional wing model with a NACA 4412 airfoil section. Triangular vortex generators with heights of 10 mm and 20 mm were applied, while a clean wing without vortex generator was used as a reference. The wing was subjected to an airflow velocity of 50 m/s at several angles of attack. The main parameters observed were the lift coefficient (CL), drag coefficient (CD), and flow visualization around the wing surface. The simulation results show that the addition of a 10 mm vortex generator increases CL at higher angles of attack compared to the clean wing. In contrast, the installation of a 20 mm vortex generator primarily resulted in a higher CD and did not provide a positive contribution to lift performance. Overall, it could be concluded that  for this research configuration, the 10 mm vortex generator increase the aerodynamic performance of the wing.
