Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of fiscal policy on the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the food crops subsector in Sumatra Island using panel data regression analysis with the Fixed Effects Model (FEM). The independent variables in this study include Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Domestic Investment (DI), Labor Absorption (LA), and Government Expenditure (GE), while the dependent variable analyzed is the GRDP of the food crops subsector. The findings indicate that FDI and DI do not have a significant impact on the GRDP of the food crops subsector. In contrast, labor absorption has a positive effect, whereas government expenditure negatively affects the subsector, suggesting that budget allocation in this sector is not yet optimal. With an Adjusted R-Square value of 27.78%, 72.21% of the variations in GRDP are influenced by other factors such as infrastructure, commodity prices, and climate conditions. Therefore, further research is needed to identify additional factors to enhance the effectiveness of fiscal policy in the agricultural sector in Sumatra Island.

Abstract

This This article aims to analyze the leading commodities in the plantation sub-sector and the base sector in North Sumatra Province, examine the structure and growth rate of commodity production within the plantation sub-sector, and assess the contribution of each leading commodity to the economy of North Sumatra Province. The study focuses on the analysis of structure, growth, and economic contribution. Data were collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics and analyzed quantitatively using the Location Quotient (LQ) formula, classical Shift Share Analysis (SSA), and Klassen Typology with the assistance of Microsoft Excel. The findings indicate that palm oil and coffee are base sectors (LQ 1). The plantation sector in North Sumatra is not influenced by national growth (  negative), with some commodities growing faster (  positive) while others grow more slowly ( negative). Only palm oil, cocoa, and tobacco possess a competitive advantage (  positive), while overall production performance is relatively good despite disparities ( varies). Based on the Klassen Typology, palm oil and coffee fall into Quadrant I (advanced and rapidly growing sector), rubber into Quadrant II (advanced but stagnant sector), and coconut, cocoa, sugarcane, tea, and tobacco into Quadrant III (potential for development).

Abstract

Global demand for patchouli oil reaches around 1,500 tonnes annually, with Indonesia supplying around 70 per cent of total demand. The area under patchouli cultivation in Indonesia has declined by an average of 1.52 per cent per year, and patchouli production in 2024 is estimated to reach only 2,220 tonnes, a sharp decline of 14.17% compared to the 2023 figure. However, the price of patchouli at the farmer level in the domestic market is quite encouraging. Therefore, with the increase in patchouli prices, farmers are expected to be able to increase production and exports of patchouli products in the international market. Indonesia's patchouli export destinations are spread across the continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa. The researcher aims to analyse coffee exports (HS 0901) to the largest export destinations, namely Egypt, Malaysia, Italy, and Japan, although in this case, coffee export volumes have decreased. This study is a secondary data analysis using time series data from 2014 to 2023. The export data analysed pertains to clove exports with HS code 3301 to Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, and France, using Revealed Comparative Advantage Analysis and the Trade Specialisation Index. Based on the results of the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Trade Specialisation Index (ISP) analyses, it can be concluded that Indonesian patchouli products have a very strong competitive position in the international market. The RCA values for several major export destinations, particularly Singapore, the Philippines, and Vietnam, indicate consistent comparative advantages.

Abstract

This study analyzes the development strategy of Istana Nabila Chips SME in Medan using a qualitative case study approach. SMEs play a vital role in Indonesia's economy, yet face challenges such as limited Capital (72.8% rely on personal funds) and intense competition. The research aims to identify strengthening factors and barriers in developing traditional snack businesses in the Digital era. The research method includes in-depth interviews with the business owner and three key employees, field observations, and analysis of financial documents and Social media from January-February 2025. Data were analyzed thematically with triangulation for validation. Results reveal four main strengths: (1) unique traditional recipes with 78% customer loyalty due to distinctive taste, (2) creative packaging featuring Medan's cultural elements enhancing visual appeal, (3) Social Capital based on familial relationships improving employee retention, and (4) active Digital Marketing through Instagram and WhatsApp contributing 65% of sales. However, the business faces weaknesses in conventional management, limited distribution (70% local sales), and human resource constraints. Development opportunities include 25% growth in snack e-commerce, Sharia KUR program (5% interest), and collaborations with local influencers. Main threats comprise price competition with national brands, raw material price fluctuations (40% increase during rainy season), and changing Gen Z consumer preferences toward healthier products. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of integrative strategies combining local strengths with Digital adaptation.

Abstract

The high population will have an impact on the food crisis and poverty if it is not balanced with food security. The Indonesian government must be able to formulate a national food policy that can improve food security. The food policy includes the availability of food Supplies in good quantity and quality as well as affordable food prices by the community and safe for consumption. The purpose of this study is to examine the synergy of the national food security system. This type of research is qualitative research with the aim of explaining the phenomenon by reviewing existing data. Data sources are obtained through bibliographic data from manuscripts obtained from Google Scholar and analyzed using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) which is a method that uses previous evidence-based evidence through reviews, evaluations, structured evaluations, classifications and categorizations. Based on the results of the review, the results of this study include: implementing good governance as a challenge and solution to food security; food security stability also affects price and distribution policies; increasing rice production will make a major contribution to rice production. Superior rice varieties will increase food security and reduce poverty; food distribution is still not optimal so that availability in each region and prices in each region vary.
