Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought significant changes in social interaction patterns, especially in kinship relationships. This study aims to understand how kinship dynamics change in the digital era using the symbolic interaction perspective introduced by Herbert Blumer. This study uses a qualitative approach with a document study method to analyze various secondary sources related to changes in social interaction in families. The results of the study indicate that the use of social media and communication technology has changed the form of family communication from face-to-face to digital-based. This allows geographically separated families to stay connected, but also presents challenges in maintaining emotional closeness. The use of digital symbols such as emojis, stickers, and video calls replaces physical expressions in communication, which can affect the depth of social interaction in kinship relationships. This study also found that shifts in communication patterns in families can affect solidarity and social support between family members. Digital technology can be a means to strengthen or weaken kinship relationships depending on how individuals interpret it in their daily lives. Thus, this study provides important insights for academics and social practitioners regarding the impact of technology on social interaction and family dynamics in the digital era. Abstract

This study examines the impact of gender discrimination on female dropout rates and their access to employment opportunities in Makassar City, Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews with 30 women aged 15 to 30 who dropped out of school or had difficulty accessing employment. The results showed that female dropout rates ranged from 15-20%, which was caused by social norms that prioritize women's traditional roles, lack of family support, and economic constraints. Only 25% of women from low-income families continued their education to college. Gender discrimination also hinders women from accessing formal employment, with the majority trapped in the informal sector with low incomes. This study highlights the need for effective policy interventions to improve education and employment opportunities for women. These findings provide insights for policy makers to create an environment that supports gender equality in education and employment, while changing public perceptions about women's roles. This study is expected to be a reference for efforts to improve women's welfare in Makassar.

Abstract

Cyberbullying and harassment in online media platforms pose significant challenges, necessitating effective prevention strategies. This research comprehensively analyzes various prevention strategies, including technological, educational, community-based, policy, and collaborative interventions. Findings underscore the importance of a multifaceted approach, combining technological solutions with educational initiatives, community engagement, policy frameworks, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. While successful interventions empower individuals with digital literacy, empathy, and peer support, challenges such as sample biases, self-reporting biases, and ethical considerations must be addressed. By synthesizing insights from existing literature and theoretical frameworks, this research informs theory, practice, and policy in combating cyberbullying and harassment, paving the way for a safer and more respectful digital environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between hate comments on social media and users' self-confidence, providing a comprehensive analysis grounded in Social Comparison Theory and cyberbullying research. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveys a diverse sample of social media users and conducts in-depth interviews to explore the extent and impact of exposure to hate comments. The findings reveal a significant negative correlation between the frequency of hate comments and self-confidence levels, with younger users and women being particularly vulnerable. The study also identifies the moderating role of social support, where strong support networks help mitigate the negative effects of hate comments. Potential limitations include sample size constraints, self-report biases, and challenges in generalizability. The implications of the findings are far-reaching, suggesting the need for individual strategies to manage social media use, therapeutic interventions by mental health professionals, and enhanced anti-harassment measures by social media platforms. By addressing these issues, we can foster a healthier digital environment that supports users' mental health and well-being.

Abstract

Gender-based violence remains a pressing issue in Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, with official data reporting dozens of cases involving women and children each year. However, these figures do not fully reflect the actual conditions, as many cases go unreported due to social stigma and a prevailing culture of silence. Within the local Biak context, the indigenous wisdom of Kankain Karkara which emphasizes sitting together, reflecting, and resolving issues through customary deliberation offers significant potential as a cultural foundation for educational interventions aimed at preventing gender-based violence. The values of solidarity, consensus, adherence to customary norms, and peace embedded in Kankain Karkara provide a strong basis for developing an educational model that fosters gender-sensitive environments. This study aims to formulate an educational model rooted in local wisdom to strengthen collective awareness and build a gender-responsive educational ecosystem. The research employed a qualitative approach with a participatory case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with customary leaders, officials from DP3AKB/UPTD PPA, NGO activists, teachers, and students; participatory observations in schools and indigenous communities; as well as document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, comprising data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Model validation was carried out through focus group discussions (FGDs) involving key local stakeholders. The findings demonstrate that integrating Kankain Karkara into education can serve as an effective strategy to overcome cultural silence, reduce stigma, and enhance gender literacy among younger generations. In conclusion, education based on local wisdom is not only contextually relevant but also functions as a transformative strategy that bridges indigenous values, formal policies, and educational practices. This model has the potential to be replicated in other regions with similar cultural characteristics to promote the creation of more just and gender-equitable societies.
