Abstract

This research attempted to determine the use of Story Board in teaching writing skills in recount text in the ninth grade of SMPN 7 Palopo. This study applied a pre-experimental method. The researcher gets the score on five aspects of writing skills, content, organization, vocabulary, grammar/language use, and mechanics, by using a pre-test and post-test test. The population of this research was the ninth-grade students at SMPN 7 Palopo. There were 19 students as the sample, which is by purposive sampling. This research showed that the mean score of students writing tests in the post-test was 73.21, which is higher than the pre-test score, 60.37. Then the value of tc(tcount)= 7.56 was higher than tt(ttable)= 2.064. It means the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, and (H0) is rejected. It concludes that using a storyboard to improve students' writing skills in recounting text in the ninth grade of SMPN 7 Palopo was effective.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of metaphors in the conventional language employed by Indonesian food vloggers when describing food, claiming it as a form of linguistic creativity influenced by their cognitive capabilities. Creativity in language is a gift that humans inherently possess, enabling them to freely communicate, share information, and convey intentions. This premise is grounded in the claim that humans cognitively possess mental faculties allowing for unrestricted language production (Saeed, 2003). Traditionally, metaphors are understood as a literary style often used in poetry, novels, or drama. However, in reality, humans are inseparable from metaphors (Lakoff in Lakoff and Johnson, 2003). Cognitively, humans use metaphors to facilitate understanding by associating one term with another in language (Lakoff in Jackendoff and Aaron, 1991). The data source for this research comprises several videos from Indonesian food vloggers, including 4 videos each from Anak Kuliner, Boengkoes Network, Mamank Kuliner, and Nex Carlos. These vloggers are well-known in Indonesia with a substantial number of subscribers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, which allows for a comprehensive explanation of phenomena observed in the data. The analysis reveals that in describing food, food vloggers tend to use structural metaphors more frequently than other types of metaphors, with 26 occurrences recorded. This finding indicates that equating the domain of food taste with another domain structurally makes it easier to convey and understand abstract taste experiences through the shared experiences of vloggers and their audiences

Abstract

In this research, the approaches to enhance the public engagement in the monitoring of general elections in Papua, Indonesia a politically sensitive area with restricted freedom are explored. Employing both structured and unstructured research methodologies, the study identifies and examines the politics of exclusion, including political violence, distrust of the electoral process, and geographic constraints, as the chief causes of non-attendance at elections among citizens. As it can be seen from the above analysis, political victimisation, especially from political big-wigs and relevant local offices, appears to predominate as a barrier to stakeholder engagement. As the way forward for all these challenges, the study proposed an increase in the protection of whistle blowers, utilizing online means for remote monitoring of electoral activity, and CSO’s strengthening to improve electoral inclusiveness. Overall, the study accrues important findings on the ways that legal, technological, and community driven approaches advance democratic accountability as well as seek to achieve a more transparent electoral process in Papua.
