Abstract

This study investigated students' perceptions of speaking activities in XI Grade of SMA Negeri 19 Maluku Barat Daya. The data was obtained by a survey conducted from September 23rd to October 25th, 2021. The number of respondents who participated in this study were 33 students who provided information regarding their perception toward English speaking activities they conducted in the classroom. They responded to 15 statements from the questionnaire, which required their perception of speaking activities and types of speaking activities in English class. The study results revealed that the activities carried out in class XI were dominated by group discussions and teacher question and answer (Q &A) sessions. In addition, most respondents consider speaking activity an essential aspect that builds interaction with other people. In general, the respondents asserted that talking in English is fun. From the result of the current study, it is also suggested that there are many aspects that must be taught to students to master speaking skills.

Abstract

This Study investigates the students’ reading habits at the English Education Study Program of PSDKU Maluku Barat Daya which was done by conducting a survey from 05 October until 04 November 2021. The total number of respondents who participated in this research was 69 respondents by administering questionnaires with 20 questions. The findings showed that the majority of all respondents like reading but at the same time they just read for college purposes. Thus, reading is not a favourite activity they do without concrete reasons. However, the students have pretty good reading habits.

Abstract

This research aimed to learn how to implement the “PQRST Strategy” in English class successfully and to find out the responses of the tenth-grade students of SMA NEG 13 MBD toward implementing the PQRST strategy in English class. This study was action research and covered two cycles. Generally, both cycles consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, this study used quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative is related to the observation checklist and questionnaire. The qualitative data were acquired from the pre-test and post-test. The result of the research showed the PQRST strategy has an important role in increasing students’ reading comprehension in the tenth grade of SMA NEG 13 MBD. It can be said that this strategy was easier and helped students in the teaching-learning process of the English class activity. It could be proved by raising the students’ reading comprehension test scores. The average score on the pre-test was 16,87; on the post-test, it was 63,67, which became 77,91. The PQRST strategy in reading (narrative text) could increase students’ reading comprehension skills. Based on the results of the discussion above, it can be concluded that applying the PQRST strategy to the tenth-grade students could be improved. On the other hand, this strategy was effective and an alternative way for the students, even the local teacher, to add their strategy to the teaching-learning process because it interested students in learning and remembering what they learned. It could also be seen from the result after cycle I, which was 43,75%, and then cycle II, where 84,37% of students achieved KKM

Abstract

Think Pair And Share (TPS) is an effective technique in teaching reading in-class activity. The purpose of this research is to (1)How can the Think-Pair-Share technique improve students' reading skills in the first grade of SMA NEG 11 WETANG MBD? (2) What are students' responses about the Think-Pair-Share technique in reading skills at the first grade of SMA NEG 11 WETANG MBD? This classroom action research (CAR) was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data for this research was the students' reading skills. The researcher used a test, Questioner and Observation, to collect the data. This research was done with an SMA Negeri 11 Wetang MBD English teacher. Based on the result and the discussion, it concluded that applying the Think-Pair-Share technique improved students' reading skills in the first grade of SMA NEG 11 WETANG MBD. The students were actively and enthusiastically involved in the teaching-learning process. It made it easier for the students to understand the material, so it could improve the student's reading comprehension ability. This could be seen from the result obtained of action on cycle I 60, where 00% of students reached KKM. Then, performance in cycle II increased to 90.00% of students who reached KKM.

Abstract

One of the learning activities impacted by the transmission of the COVID-19 virus was a listening exercise in a university classroom. Regarding that assertion, listening comprehension requires help from learners' English language components and lecturers' aid. The study's objectives were: 1) to describe the influence of synchronous and asynchronous audio in online learning (Synchronous and Asynchronous in English Education Study Program); 2) to describe students' listening comprehension; and 3) to determine the positive and significant influence of synchronous and asynchronous audio in online learning on student listening comprehension. This study used a quantitative technique using Ex-post Facto research as the design. Purposive sampling was used to choose 32 students from the English Education Study Program in 2018 and 2019. A questionnaire was used to collect data, and the students' listening final grades were evaluated using IBM SPSS 20.0. The findings of this study revealed that: 1) Synchronous and Asynchronous at English Education Study Program was in the medium category, as the highest score was 76; 2) Students' Listening Comprehension was in the "A" category, as the mean score was 82; 3) Synchronous and Asynchronous have a favorable and substantial impact on students' listening comprehension, as evidenced by the coefficient determinant value of 0.267 (26.7%). The findings of this study are intended to be valuable to lecturers, students, and other researchers.

Abstract

As one of the receptive English skills, listening has a significant role as a primary skill for daily communication. Despite its importance, the requirement for doing listening tasks in an academic context has to lead the students to use more practical and effective listening strategies to improve their listening skills and competence, as well. The purposes of this study were to investigate students’ perception towards Note-Taking used in doing a listening activity at listening class, also to find out the benefits and difficulties of note-taking for students. This study used a survey research design by integrating a mixed-method, in which the data was analyzed in qualitative and quantitative ways. The participant of the study was students of English Education Study Program of Pattimura University in the academic year 2017. Classroom observation, a questionnaire, and interview were employed as the techniques in collecting the data. The result showed that 90% of the students have a positive attitude that note taking is important for them to gain information easily. Besides, to see the benefit and difficulties, students’ response that they get more benefits than difficulties in using note-taking enable the students to do the listening activities as being required.

Abstract

Abstrak Untuk peningkatan karir guru dibutuhkan kecakapan atau kemahiran bahasa Inggris yang teruji lewat tes kompetensi Bahasa Inggris. Saat ini telah banyak layanan tes kompetensi Bahasa yang ditawarkan baik secara Onsite (Luring) maupun secara Online (Daring). Untuk membantu para guru dan calon guru maka kegiatan Pengabdian ini dibuat dalam bentuk Webinar dan memiliki 3 tujuan: Memperkenalkan, melatih dan melakukan Simulasi Tes Kompetensi Bahasa Inggris. Sasaran kegiatan adalah pada guru-guru dan calon guru yang berada di 3 kabupaten dan kota yaitu Kota Ambon, Kabupaten Kepulauan Aru dan Kabupaten Maluku Barat Daya. Kegiatan dilakukan selama 2 hari. Pada hari pertama, Peserta di perkenalan beberapa jenis tes komptensi Bahasa Inggris seperti TOEFL, IELTS dan British Council EnglishScore. Peserta juga dilatih dengan pemahaman dasar, struktur test serta tips dan trick melakukan tes yang difokuskan pada tes TOEFL. Pada hari kedua, peserta diberikan kesempatan untuk mengikuti Simulasi Mock Test TOEFL Prediction. Peserta yang hadir pada hari pertama berjumlah 166 orang. Namun pada hari kedua hanya 56 peserta yang bersedia dan menjalani simulasi tes TOEFL Prediction secara online. Umpan balik menunjukna bahwa lebih dari 90% peserta mengaku bahwa kegiatan Pengabdian ini telah menjawab ekpektasi dan kebutuhan mereka untuk mempersiapkan diri dalam menghadapi tes kompetensi Bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci: Tes Kompetensi Bahasa Inggris, Pelatihan Guru, Tes TOEFL Abstract English skills and competence certified through English competence test has become one of the requirements for teacher professional development. Currently, we have many language competence tests offered online or onsite. Therefore, this community outreach program was designed in a Webinar Based activity to equip teachers and teacher-to-be in this matter. The Webinar has 3 main objectives: introduce, train and conduct simulation of English Competence test. The webinar was aimed to reach teachers and teachers-to-be in 3 areas: Ambon City, Aru Islands Regency and Southwest Maluku regency. The Webinar was conducted for 2 days. On the first day, participants were introduced to TOEFL Test, IELTS test and British Council English Score test. They were also trained in the basic understanding of the test, the test structure, as well as the tips and tricks in doing the test. On the second day, participants were invited to follow an online TOEFL Prediction test. 166 participants attended the first day of Webinar. Meanwhile, 56 participants agreed to participate in the second day Online TOEFL Predction Simulation. The feedback shows that more than 90% participants agrees that the webinar has met their expecteation and answer their needs on how to prepare for English competency test. Abstract

Pemanfaatan multimedia dalam pembelajaran berbasis proyek (PjBL) dapat meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa dan efektivitas pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Namun, keterbatasan akses teknologi serta kurangnya pelatihan dalam pemanfaatan multimedia masih menjadi tantangan bagi banyak guru, terutama di daerah kepulauan seperti Maluku. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan pelatihan yang dapat membekali guru dengan keterampilan integrasi multimedia dalam pembelajaran berbasis proyek guna meningkatkan kualitas pengajaran dan pengalaman belajar siswa. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kapasitas guru dalam menerapkan pembelajaran berbasis proyek melalui integrasi multimedia, sehingga mereka dapat mengadaptasi metode ini sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan kondisi pembelajaran di sekolah masing-masing. Pelatihan ini melibatkan 18 guru bahasa Inggris di Maluku Tengah dengan metode studi kasus, diskusi kelompok, demonstrasi, dan praktik langsung dalam merancang materi ajar berbasis proyek dan multimedia. Evaluasi dilakukan untuk menilai pemahaman peserta, kepercayaan diri, serta tantangan dalam implementasi metode ini. Pelatihan menghasilkan 12 jenis proyek berbasis multimedia yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mendengar, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis siswa. Evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa peserta memiliki pemahaman yang baik tentang PjBL serta percaya diri dalam mengintegrasikan multimedia dalam pengajaran. Namun, beberapa guru masih menghadapi kendala teknis dalam pemanfaatan teknologi. Implikasi praktis dari pelatihan ini adalah guru dapat mengadaptasi dan mengimplementasikan pembelajaran berbasis proyek dengan mengintegrasi multimedia secara berkelanjutan, meningkatkan efektivitas pengajaran, serta menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih interaktif dan inovatif bagi siswa.
