Abstract

This paper presents a research report on the characteristics of information presented in eight blogs in 2008 and how those eight bloggers (blog owners) empowered civil society through their published articles. Field data demonstrate that the articles they published contained empowerment messages, achieved positive responses from the blog visitors, and implied that the blog owner conducted their social function as bloggers. However, the dispersed information in the blogs has only obtained one response from each visitor. That information could not develop a dialog for creating a consensus on what civil society should do when they encounter the state. Having seen the relations between persons and blog, bloggers were reluctant to apply interactivity principle when they receive responses from their blog visitors. They were receptive, appreciative, and sympathetic to individuals in responding to their articles. However, only a few of them wished that their participants changed and developed. They expected their changed and grown turned into empowered citizen when they faced the state. In short, Indonesian bloggers are only partially in empowering civil society. Keywords : blog, blogger, civil society empowerment, interactivity principle, dialog, and relations between persons and blog.

Abstract

Introduction: The evolution of radio journalism in Indonesia provides critical insights into its historical, technological, cultural, and political significance. As a medium, radio has been a cornerstone of public discourse and democratization, particularly during transformative periods such as the Reform Era. This study examines the evolution and contemporary challenges of radio journalism, with a specific focus on the operational realities of private radio stations in Indonesia. Methods: This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining in-depth interviews with radio managers and surveys targeting radio station managers. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing the sustainability, quality, and adaptability of radio journalism. Findings: The findings indicate that increased press freedom has facilitated more diverse and independent journalistic practices. However, the sector faces significant challenges in adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving media ecosystem. Digital disruption has created an urgent need for multi-platform strategies, yet many stations lack the technical expertise and resources required for full adaptation. Additionally, the scarcity of trained journalists and editorial teams limits the production of high-quality, independent journalism, undermining public trust in radio as a credible medium. Originality: This study presents a groundbreaking exploration of the evolution of radio journalism in Indonesia, offering a comprehensive perspective that seamlessly intertwines its historical roots with the pressing challenges of the modern media era. By examining the sector’s regulatory and economic pressures, it sheds light on the structural and operational hurdles faced by radio journalism while uncovering innovative strategies for navigating the disruptive forces of digital transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze of the expressions of femininity in food photography as carried out by Kompakers Jogja. Photography has historically been established inside male-dominated domains. Unlike the historical context where photography has consistently been associated with male-dominated, Kompakers Jogja presents a contrasting perspective that questions the established norms of male dominance. This research explore the diverse viewpoints of ten individuals using a combination of photovoice and photo-elicitation. Through the application of qualitative content analysis within the thematic framework of femininity in photography, categorized as Theatricality, Tactility, Softness, and Hybridity. The analysis reveals that community members infuse distinct feminine sensibilities in their photography, as corroborated through visual scrutiny and validated during photo-elicitation. Prevalent among these manifestations are theatricality and hybridity, exemplified by strategic prop placement and digital enhancements aimed at augmenting the aesthetic allure of the captured images. In addition, tactility becomes important, especially when carefully choosing angles to elicit gustatory wants. Although the works of the members exhibit some softness, they serve more as supporting element. In summary, the Kompakers Jogja depict motifs that subtly and intricately symbolize femininity in their photography. This research shows the distinct characteristics linked to the facets of femininity as expressions of women's self-identity.

Abstract

The subsidized fuel price increase poses a significant policy challenge in Indonesia, characterized by complexities in decision-making and implementation. This study investigates the mediatization of political discourse surrounding this issue during two distinct periods: 2013, under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), and 2022, under President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Employing the Discourse Coalition Framework (DCF) and Discourse Network Analysis (DNA), the research analyzes media narratives on fuel price increases published by Detik.com, one of Indonesia's most prominent digital media outlets. The findings reveal a notable shift in discourse coalitions between the two periods. In 2013, opposition to the policy was primarily voiced by politically affiliated actors, whereas in 2022, civil society figures emerged as the dominant counteractors. Supportive narratives, however, consistently stemmed from government-aligned individuals in both periods. By comparing the actors involved, the arguments presented, and the evolution of discourse over time, this study highlights the changing dynamics of mediatized policy debates. Moreover, Detik.com demonstrated a balanced mediatization of supportive and opposing perspectives, with government-affiliated voices predominating in support, and opposition transitioning from political elites in 2013 to civil society in 2022. These findings underscore the media's evolving role in fostering issue-focused narratives, reducing polarization, and facilitating informed public discourse on contentious policy issues.

Abstract

This study examines the policy of raising subsidized fuel prices in Indonesia through a dramaturgical lens, employing discourse analysis as its methodology. Each fuel price increase triggers intense political debates, involving key governmental figures and eliciting diverse public responses. The research contrasts two pivotal periods: the policy decisions during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration in 2013 and those under President Joko Widodo in 2022. Using a dramaturgical framework, the study analyzes the dimensions of scripting, setting, staging, and performance in policymaking, highlighting how each administration constructs distinct policy narratives. In 2013, the policy faced significant opposition and robust public discourse. In contrast, by 2022, media strategies were strategically employed to shape the narrative and mitigate dissent. The findings reveal contrasting approaches by the two administrations in managing the political and social consequences of the fuel price increases. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of public policy in the context of economic and political challenges, emphasizing the critical role of communication strategies in the implementation of contentious policies.

Abstract

The Directorate General of Immigration utilizes Instagram as one of its public communication channels through the official account @ditjen_imigrasi. The formal and informal characteristics of the messages conveyed through this account prompted this study to explore how millennial workers interpret the content produced by @ditjen_imigrasi, using reception theory. Reception theory focuses on how audiences interpret the meaning of mediated messages. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with five millennial workers who accessed the @ditjen_imigrasi Instagram content during 2024. The findings indicate that two of the five informants were in the dominant-hegemonic position, while the remaining three were in the negotiated position. This suggests that, in general, the informants perceived that the @ditjen_imigrasi account has not fully functioned as an immigration information channel that meets public expectations. The variation in interpretation among informants was influenced by their social backgrounds and prior experiences in dealing with immigration matters

Abstract

Background: Global South colleges employ public relations differently. This gap must be researched to improve these institutions’ reputations. This paper maps and analyzes university public relations research and evaluates science communication framework integration. Method: A comprehensive literature study of four main public relations journals examined publication frequency on public relations, universities, higher education, and colleges during the past 12 years. Results: Public relations research has increased, although university-related studies are scarce. Only twenty-one articles explored this sector, mostly by US scholars focusing on crisis communication. These findings reveal higher education institutions’ communication dynamics and goals when analyzed organizationally and systemically. This report discusses university branding, digital communication methods, and stakeholder participation. It also reveals temporal patterns, such as communication practice changes over time, and university communication components like crisis management and community engagement. These factors depart from public relations research’s corporate and governmental focus. Conclusion: University-specific public relations literature is lacking due to crisis communication studies and US-based authors. This emphasizes the need for further research, particularly the incorporation of the science communication framework, which is essential for understanding how higher education institutions communicate with the public on scientific matters. Implications: This study suggests universities use communication tactics that differ from commercial and government public relations studies.
