Abstract

This study aims to analyze of the expressions of femininity in food photography as carried out by Kompakers Jogja. Photography has historically been established inside male-dominated domains. Unlike the historical context where photography has consistently been associated with male-dominated, Kompakers Jogja presents a contrasting perspective that questions the established norms of male dominance. This research explore the diverse viewpoints of ten individuals using a combination of photovoice and photo-elicitation. Through the application of qualitative content analysis within the thematic framework of femininity in photography, categorized as Theatricality, Tactility, Softness, and Hybridity. The analysis reveals that community members infuse distinct feminine sensibilities in their photography, as corroborated through visual scrutiny and validated during photo-elicitation. Prevalent among these manifestations are theatricality and hybridity, exemplified by strategic prop placement and digital enhancements aimed at augmenting the aesthetic allure of the captured images. In addition, tactility becomes important, especially when carefully choosing angles to elicit gustatory wants. Although the works of the members exhibit some softness, they serve more as supporting element. In summary, the Kompakers Jogja depict motifs that subtly and intricately symbolize femininity in their photography. This research shows the distinct characteristics linked to the facets of femininity as expressions of women's self-identity.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors investigate argument activities of the journalism of The Conversation Indonesia (TCID). Taking into consideration five elements of argumentation —philosophical component, theoretical component, empirical component, analytical component, and practical component—this study identifying patterns argument that characterize of 41 science articles in 2021 by using qualitative content analysis. To complete the data, we conducted in-depth interviews with the chief of editor/content director of TCID. We also conducted an extensive review of current literature. This paper finds that most of the science articles reported by TCID uses 3 component arguments, namely the philosophical component, the empirical component, and the practical component. This shows that the authors only have a degree of wanting to form knowledge at a moderate level. Other data shows not all writers present predictive arguments in themselves. Only 80% of authors present predictive arguments. We argue that science journalism practiced by TCID is not passionate about building knowledge among its readers. It has not succeeded in promoting Indonesian science journalism as a means of forming readers' knowledge. Therefore, strong efforts are needed to ensure that science journalism can ground research results that shape readers' knowledge.

Abstract

This study examines storytelling techniques for adolescents in group communication as a medium for reproductive health education in the “Bacarita Kespro”, a program organized by Tenggara Youth Community. The use of new educational methods is essential as traditional lecture-based approaches have proven ineffective in educating adolescents about reproductive health. Guided by narrative communication theory and symbolic convergence theory, this study employs a qualitative approach combining observation and interview data. The results show that storytelling practices in group communication involve adolescents alternating roles as storytellers and listeners, focusing on the theme of changes during puberty. From the perspective of narrative understanding, the stories are of high quality—culturally relevant, logical, and grounded in real-life experiences directly shared by adolescents. Furthermore, visual aids play an important role in helping participants both tell and comprehend the story. These findings provide new insights into the health communication sector about how adolescents communicate in the context of reproductive health, highlighting the importance of their active participation in the learning process.

However, for the time being, the result is not optimal. Audience is still unsure of the environmental news that reaches them. Their emotions are not touched by the environmental news, so they can not contribute to solving environmental problems. Based on this fact, come up idea to make storytelling as a way to convince audience in environmental journalism. Before implementing this concept, the writer conducted research on storytelling practices in broadcasting news of forest and land fires (karhutla) in Riau Pos. Evidently Riau Pos, who had received an award from the provincial government of Riau, has not practiced storytelling in broadcast karhutla news. Abstract

An important theme of science communication research is research on science article writers. However, not many scholars are interested in doing this research. Based on this fact, we conducted a research on the ideal position of a science article writer. It  turns out that he definition of science writer has changed in Indonesia. Quantitative content analysis of articles reported by The Conversation Indonesia during December 2021 found that the writerss motivated the public to understand and use scientific principles to meet their daily needs. The results of in-depth interviews with three prominent professors at Universitas Gadjah Mada confirm the same fact. They do not just tell the object of research in a certain context. This fact certainly needs to be imitated by other science writers. However, there is a basic recipe that must be practiced by other science writers. The practice of the recipe will make them autonomous and responsible to society. Thus, the article will explain the ways that can be taken to make it happen.

Abstract

Digital transformation has brought the internet and social media into today's new media. Their presence has brought changes to the broadcasting industry, including radio broadcasting media, and has impacted media consumption shifts among listeners, as well as a decline in radio advertising. This forces radio operators to take strategic actions for the sustainability of radio. This paper aims to explain the shift in radio media consumption behavior and the strategies adopted by radio operators in facing various changes. Media convergence theory serves as the basis for analyzing these dynamics. To answer the research objectives, the researcher applied two research methods: quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to obtain data from respondents from public, local, private, and community radio broadcasters in several regions in Indonesia. Furthermore, a qualitative method was chosen as the approach in the case study. Qualitative data collection was conducted by interviewing five selected radio operators. The results of the study indicate that digital transformation has shifted radio consumption and changed radio broadcasting practices, making media convergence one way to survive in this digital era.
