Abstract

In the midst of the ideas, concepts, messages, and aesthetics uniformity at national films, it is interesting to make Opera Jawa movie by Garin Nugroho the object of study. That is the reason why the study was conducted. The research was an effort to improve the audience's productive and active role in understanding and interpreting the subtitles by focusing on how to read the message and meaning through subtitles constructed by the diversity of the medium use. The study conducted with the postmodern aesthetic approach through semiotic method with descriptive interpretive technique dismantles the structure of the film code language through the analysis of narrative and dramatic structure-forming elements of the film. It deals with aspects such as non-verbal signs of visual elements and movement in the film shot. These elements are constructed by the medium expression choice of the filmmaker in delivering his message. The filmmaker delivers his criticism or satire through swerved meaning and medium exploration (medium hybridism). Through this film, Garin Nugroho deconstructed the figures, space, message and meaning, as well as the narrative of the epic Ramayana by Walmiki as a reference. It reflects gender issues, feminism, masculinity domination, class warfare, and capitalism. Keywords: medium hybridity; postmodern films Semiotics; deconstruction.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the structure and pattern of narratives in art, which in this case Indonesian fine art is used as a case study. This topic is important considering that the assumption that works of fine art have narrative characteristics has become common knowledge, but the structure and narrative patterns within the genre of work of fine art that can be used as a reference have not yet been formulated. By using a structural semiotic approach, studies in this paper have found that narrative patterns in fine art are a combination of denotative visual sign units presented as works on the syntagmatic axis of language (visual) interrelated to form associations or groups of narrative connotations on the paradigmatic axis (community knowledge system). This proposition, as well as several other formulations found in the analysis, has a significant contribution to the development of fine art, both theoretically and practically, both in Indonesia and the world.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Visualization and Transformation of Embodiment in the Film of Planes Animation”. As an animation film, Planes is interesting because it is using inanimate objects, in this case the planes, as characters. This fact indicates that the character transformation is done by an animator, from the character of inanimate objects in to live character. By using the methods of structural and semiotic analysis, found that the transformation is done not only for personification (it is made as if the inanimate objects becomes alive). In the Planes, “the living things” not only exist in the mind as imagination, but it is exist out of the mind, as an autonomous reality. Based on that, Planes is the animation film which opens space for creating a new myth in the history of culture. Like the fable as a myth in the tradition of primary orality, Planes allows the formation of myth in digital oral tradition.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article contains a study of film adaptation from a literature media (novel) into audio-visual media(film). This research is a case study of Perempuan Berkalung Sorban film by Hanung Bramantyo, whichwas adapted from a novel with the same title that was written by Abidah el-Khalieqy. By combining a textanalysis method from Thomas Leittch, Mathew T. Jones’ film adaptation theory and the result of interviewto confirm the text analysis, this research produced some interesting findings. The research verified thatthe adaptation’s process does not merely focus on technical issue in media adaptation (from novel tofilm), but also focuses on another aspects that will involve the audience i.e. a fact that text and dialoguebecome references that will be appreciated by audience. As a result, there were excessive distortions anddeviations on the text that were created by the film maker caused a bias interpretation. Audiences nolonger interpreted the film as a visual text objectively. Instead, they would think about certain prejudiceagainst the film maker. In film adaptation, certain tendencies of film maker are easy to be predicted byaudience. This fact has caused film adaptation becomes controversial easily. Keywords: Media Adaptation, Transformation, Opposition, ControversyABSTRAKArtikel ini berisi kajian tentang alih media, yakni dari media verbal sastra (novel) kemedia visualfilm.
