Abstract

With the economic development of Indonesia in the recent years, there has been a large number of Indonesian students continue their higher education in overseas countries, particularly Australia. Hence, examining their perceptions, challenges and experiences to adapt to the Australian English learning environment becomes an interesting attribute to explore. Drawing on this issue, the in-hand study explores how Indonesian learners dealt with challenges and difficulties in Australian education environment. Employing a qualitative research, this study involved eight Indonesian learners enrolled in English language programs in a number of Australian universities. Using interview as the instrument, the findings showed that the participants perceived a positive perception toward the communication activities during the teaching and learning practices; however, they encountered some difficulties related to grammar instruction within communicative practice. The results of interview further revealed that most of the learning difficulties they experienced were due to their prior exposure and habit to Indonesian teaching and learning styles. The participants further conveyed that enhancing English ability and building confidence were two most possible ways to deal with the difficulties.  These results contribute as fruitful insights for teachers to be aware of different learners’ styles and needs, particularly those coming from various cultural backgrounds, so that they could engage in more interactive teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the transformation of learning has significantly switched from face-to-face learning to online learning. Many platforms have been utilized to support the teaching and learning process, one of them is the Zoom Meeting application.  Although many studies have explored the educators’ and students’ perceptions of using Zoom, exploring the perspectives of  EFL learners in the rural context remains a paucity. This study aims to explore the EFL students’ perspective using the Zoom Meeting application, particularly in the rural college context. This study employs a qualitative method. The data analysis is used thematic analysis. The results of this study show that the students have two sides perceptions of using Zoom; on the first side, EFL students thought that Zoom is very suitable to support online learning because the features available in the zoom meeting are varied and complete. However, on the other side, based on the students’ opinions, one of the negative sides of Zoom meetings is that this application tends to take up a lot of internet quota. This condition has forced the students to try to have free Wifi access in the public space and shared money to purchase the internet quota.

Abstract

The way in which adults learn is distinctive to how children learn, hence Andragogy differs from Pedagogy and so do the implications. Although several studies have attempted to discuss the andragogy and its principles, only few studies investigate its implementation and the practical guidance on how to employ each characteristic in the teaching and learning process. To fill this void, this paper reviews the concept of andragogy and highlights its six characteristics: self-concept, experiences, readiness to learn, motivation, need to know, and problem-centred learning. Employing a narrative review of 18 journal articles from reputable international journals, the study’s findings suggest that the six characteristics/principles of andragogy are applicable in designing teaching and learning materials, teaching activities, and assignments enacted by teachers. Future research is encouraged to delve into the practice of the six characteristics of andragogy in the teaching of English as a foreign language. The differences between adults and children learning and directions for further research in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is also discussed at the end of study.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the problems encountered by EFL secondary students in learning speaking skills in the context of Islamic schools in Indonesia. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method and used observation, interview, and questionnaire as data collection instruments. The findings revealed that the problems encountered by students in speaking skills can be categorized into four groups: language problems, mental problems, personal problems, and education problems. Language problems included mother tongue interference, poor pronunciation, poor grammar, unnatural spoken English, slow speech, and limited vocabulary. Mental problems included nervousness, shame, low confidence, and lack of ideas. Personal problems consisted of attitude, laziness, environmental effects, and cultural gaps. Finally, education problems included the technique and method of teaching, facilities in teaching-learning, and limited use of media. The results of the study underscore the importance of speaking instruction for EFL learners and the need for teachers and researchers to consider language learners' speaking needs in the context of teaching and learning English. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on EFL speaking instruction and provides implications for teachers and researchers in designing effective language teaching programs.

Abstract

Computer networks are one of the skills that require mastering concepts, but a weak comprehension of these concepts can cause cognitive and psychomotor challenges for students. Several studies showed that a group of information technology education students at a university struggled with basic network practical exercises, signifying the importance of addressing conceptual understanding. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance students’ comprehension of high-level abstract computer network materials. To achieve the desired outcome, a pre-test post-test control group design was conducted on two groups of 29 students each. The results showed a positive impact on strengthening the conceptual understanding of students. Consequently, the experimental class achieved higher test scores compared to the control class, with a difference of 11.6. Data processing also showed higher N-gain values in the experimental class, indicating that analogies had a positive influence on students’ conceptual understanding of computer network materials.

Abstract

This research analyzes the competencies of judges in resolving disputes of wanprestasi (default) using Max Weber's ideal type theory as a framework. It posits that judges should possess the capability to impartially assess and apply the law, ensuring decisions reflect social justice while balancing the interests of both parties involved. The study highlights the significance of alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation and arbitration, which provide more efficient and humane solutions compared to traditional litigation. Through a case study of Mediation Agreement No. 991/Pdt.g/2016/PA.Btl, the research examines the complexities of wanprestasi disputes, emphasizing the procedural dynamics between the parties. Additionally, the study reviews existing literature to elucidate how Weber's ideal type offers a conceptual framework for understanding mediation processes. The methodology incorporates legal research with various approaches, including statutory, case, conceptual, and analytical perspectives to ensure comprehensive legal evaluation and relevance in the evolving legal landscape. The findings aim to enhance the understanding and practical implementation of mediation in wanprestasi disputes, advocating for its adoption as an effective and fair means of conflict resolution.
