Abstract

This study examines the history of Empelu Hamlet in the preservation of Balayie culture from 2010 to 2023. The background of this study stems from the fading tradition of Balayie, a ritual of the Empelu Hamlet community in Bungo Regency, Jambi, which has long been performed as a form of prayer to ask for rain during long dry seasons. This situation became an important issue that prompted research on how the people of Empelu Hamlet sought to preserve Balayie between 2010 and 2023. This research uses the historical method, which consists of four stages, namely: (1) heuristics, namely the collection of primary sources in the form of interviews with traditional leaders, hamlet heads, and the Empelu community, as well as secondary sources in the form of archives, documents, articles, and journals; (2) source criticism, both external and internal, to ensure the authenticity and validity of the data; (3) interpretation, which is the interpretation of historical facts to obtain meaning and relationships between events; and (4) historiography, which is writing the results of research in the form of a coherent, systematic, and understandable historical narrative. The results of the research show that the Balayie tradition has long historical roots and is closely related to the life of the community in Empelu. In the past, Balayie was performed in a sacred manner by traditional elders using boats on the Batang Tebo River while chanting poems and prayers. In 2023, Balayie was revived through the Kenduri Swa event. In the past, Balayie was performed in a sacred manner by traditional elders using canoes on the Batang Tebo River while chanting poems and prayers. In 2023, Balayie was revived through the Kenduri Swarnabhumi event held in Lubuk Sakti. Traditional shops, the younger generation, the local government, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology demonstrated their synergy in cultural revitalization efforts.

Abstract

This study discusses Empelu Hamlet in Cultural Studies from 2010 to 2023. The research questions are: How was Empelu Hamlet in cultural studies before 2010, and how did cultural traditions develop in Empelu Hamlet from 2010 to 2023? The objective of this study is to describe the development of cultural traditions in Empelu Village from 2010 to 2023 and before 2010. The research method used in this study is the Historical Research Method. This method consists of: 1) Heuristics, collecting data from archives, books, and documents, 2) Verification, testing the validity of the data, 3) Interpretation, analyzing the collected data, and 4) Historiography, compiling the research results into a report. The research results indicate that the development of cultural traditions in Empelu Village still preserves traditional customs, such as Baralek, Mandi Balasai, Balaie, Melebak, and Babantai, which still exist but appear sporadically in society. However, the influence of globalization and technological development has caused shifts in lifestyle patterns, particularly among the younger generation, who tend to abandon traditional cultural practices. Preservation efforts are carried out through traditional activities, local education, and local government support in the development of culture-based tourism. The conclusion of this study is that the culture of Empelu Hamlet remains intact despite undergoing changes, and a sustainable preservation strategy is needed to prevent it from losing its identity amid the tide of modernization.

Abstract

Laboratory work has traditionally served as an essential component of science education, offering students the opportunity to experience science directly through observation and experimentation. However, in the context of 21st-century learning, traditional laboratory approaches are no longer sufficient. The current educational landscape demands learning environments that not only facilitate conceptual understanding but also cultivate essential competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration. In response to these challenges, two innovative laboratory models have emerged, namely the Problem-Solving Laboratory (PSL) and the Higher Order Thinking Laboratory (HOT Lab). This study aims to explore how these laboratory designs contribute to the development of 21st-century skills among high school students. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the research involved 120 students from schools that have implemented PSL and HOT Lab activities. Data were gathered through a 25-item Likert-scale questionnaire and observation of laboratory sessions. The results indicated a positive shift in student skills, with 82 percent showing improvement in problem-solving, 78 percent in critical thinking, 75 percent in creativity, 68 percent in communication, and 63 percent in collaboration. Students also expressed higher levels of engagement, motivation, and enthusiasm during their participation in the laboratory sessions. These findings suggest that when laboratory learning is designed to promote inquiry, reflection, and contextual problem-solving, it can meaningfully enhance both cognitive and interpersonal skills. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of active learning in fostering a dynamic and student-centered classroom atmosphere. Although the results are promising, the research also points to several practical challenges, such as the need for teacher training, sufficient resources, and adequate time allocation. Overall, PSL and HOT Lab represent effective strategies to support the holistic development of learners and provide a valuable framework for science educators seeking to align classroom practices with the demands of the 21st century.

Abstract

This research aims to develop historical map learning media for the History subject, specifically the topic "Islamic Kingdoms." This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model. However, this research only went to three stages: Analysis, Design, and Development. The research subjects were teachers and 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Hulu Kuantan. In the definition stage, a needs and materials analysis was conducted to design a documentary film that aligned with the analysis. The design stage involved selecting materials and media appropriate to the analysis. The development stage involved creating a historical map using ArcGIS, which was then validated by material and media experts. The validation results showed that the developed historical map fell into the very valid media validation category (100%), and the valid material and language validation category (57.14%). Next, the historical map was piloted on 24 10th-grade students. The trial results showed that historical maps were "very practical" for use in learning, with an average practicality score of 88.8% from teachers and 84.03% from students. Based on the research findings, ArcGIS-assisted Historical Map Learning Media for the Islamic Kingdoms in Sumatra topic using the ADDIE development model can be developed.

Abstract

Indonesia’s social forestry policy aims to reconcile forest conservation with community welfare through legal access and community-based forest management. This article analyses the implementation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation (Permen LHK) No. 9/2021 on Social Forestry in Nagari Gunung Selasih, Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra. This study focuses on the roles of key actors, the implementation of social forestry schemes, their contributions to local livelihoods, and the main constraints faced. Using a qualitative descriptive design within a constructivist paradigm, data were collected through document analysis and in-depth interviews with government officials, social forestry group leaders, and community members, as well as non-participant observations of four Social Forestry Business Groups (Kelompok Usaha Perhutanan Sosial): KUPS Kopi Sungai Lomak, KUPS Randang Paku Rangkito, KUPS Trigona Gunung Selasih, and KUPS Ekowisata Ngalau Sungai Suko. The findings show that the Forest Management Unit (KPHP) acts as a facilitator, regulator, and technical advisor, whereas KUPS operationalize livelihood diversification through non-timber forest products and environmental services. Social forestry generates supplementary income, strengthens local institutions, and reinforces cultural values but is constrained by limited capacity, capital, infrastructure, and latent conflicts. This article argues that sustained multi-actor collaboration is essential for transforming legal access into durable socio-ecological benefits.

Abstract

The naming of a region (toponymy) is not merely a geographical label, but rather a linguistic artifact that stores the collective memory and cultural identity of its people. This study aims to dissect the construction of the cultural identity of the South Minahasa community through the meaning of village names from an anthropolinguistic perspective. Using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnosemantic approach, data were collected through historical document studies, field observations, and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (Tona'as). The results of the study indicate that the toponymy in South Minahasa consists of 8 villages, namely: Menara city, Maliku and Maliku 1, Ritey, Malanos Baru, Lopana and Lopana 1, Pinalin, Pondang, and Ranomea. These 8 toponyms fall into four main categories: (1) flora and fauna aspects (bioglyphs), (2) geographical aspects (geoglyphs), (3) historical events, and (4) hopes or theological values. The identity construction found represents the deep attachment of the Tou Minahasa community to nature (cosmology) and the spirit of ancestral heroism. The implications of this research emphasize that preserving toponymic meaning is a crucial strategy for maintaining the vitality of local culture amidst the tide of modernization.
