Abstract

An analysis of the quality of rainwater has been carried out in rainwater storage tanks in Sirongo Village, North Tidore District, Tidore Islands City. The purpose of this study was to identify the quality of rainwater storage (PAH) based on the drinking water quality requirements according to the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010 and knowing the quantity of water in meeting the drinking water needs of the local community. The results showed that based on the quality standards in the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 492/ Menkes/ Per/ IV/ 2010 concerning requirements for drinking water quality, rainwater quality in Sirongo Village is viewed from the physical parameters (Odor, Taste, Color, Temperature, and turbidity), chemical parameters (Flourida) and biological parameters (total coliform), meet the quality standards, while the chemical parameters (Iron and pH) do not meet the quality standards. Rainwater storage (PAH) in Sirongo village cannot meet the community's water needs because it is influenced by the amount of water used by each family member and the size of the PAH.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the synthesis and characterization of β-carotene encapsulated in the blending matrices of starch (native and hydrolyzed starch)-chitosan/TPP (tripolyphosphate) by examining the effects of starch-to-chitosan weight ratio, β-carotene addition level, and TPP addition level on the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and loading capacity (LC); and to evaluate their storage stability. The encapsulation was done by the dropwise addition of ethanolic β-carotene dispersion into the blending matrices. The results of XRD analysis show that the encapsulation process significantly decreases the crystallinity of the starches, chitosan, and β-carotene. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images reveal that the encapsulation products form irregular lumps. The EE and LC tend to increase with the increase in polymer fraction of matrices and β-carotene addition level, and with the decrease in TPP addition level. The addition of chitosan and the replacement of native starch by hydrolyzed starch tend to increase storage stability of β-carotene encapsulated in the starch matrix because chitosan can act as a good film-forming and antioxidant, while hydrolyzed starch contains amylose amylopectin with a short chain which is better in film-forming ability. These results promote the use of the hydrolyzed starch-chitosan/TPP as a matrix to enhance the stability β-carotene via encapsulations.

Abstract

In this study, microencapsulation of β-carotene was carried out in a mixed matrix of starch and chitosan with the addition of tripolyphosphate ions as a crosslinker (denoted as starch-chitosan/TPP). Two types of starch were used here, namely native and hydrolyzed starch. Hydrolyzed starch was prepared by acid hydrolysis using 2 M HCl. Microcapsules were synthesized by adding dropwise dispersion of β-carotene in ethanol to the aqueous mixture of starch-chitosan/TPP matrix accompanied by magnetic stirring and heating at 90ºC. The synthesized microcapsules were then tested for solubility and swelling power in aqueous media. The results showed that the solubility and swelling behavior of microcapsules were influenced by the characteristics of the constituent starch. The solubility of hydrolyzed starch-chitosan/TPP was greater than that of the native starch-chitosan/TPP. The native starch-chitosan/TPP microcapsules had a higher swelling power value than the hydrolyzed starch-chitosan/TPP.

Abstract

Research has been carried out to test the quality of dug well water on physical, chemical, and biological parameters in the working areas of the Samigaluh I, Girimulyo I, Sentolo I, Pengasih II, Wates, and Galur I Public Health Centers in Kulon Progo Regency. The sample consisted of 60 dug wells with 16 dug wells with low pollution risk based on the results of environmental health inspections and 44 dug wells with moderate pollution risk. the results of the calculation of the pollution index according to the Minister of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017, of the 60 wells that were sampled for measuring water quality, there were 76.67% wells with lightly polluted water quality status and 23.33% wells with good water quality status. This is in accordance with the estimated risk of pollution based on the location of the well.

Abstract

The need for plastic will increase along with technological and industrial developments, thereby increasing the amount of plastic waste. Oil and gas based plastics are not biodegradable. One way to limit the amount of plastic waste is to use biodegradable plastics, also known as bioplastics. In this study, the bioplastic material used was sago starch from Papua combined with chitosan with the addition of glycerol plasticizers and red fruit (Pandanus conoideus) oil. The use of red fruit oil, apart from being a plasticizer, is also intended to provide antioxidant properties to the resulting bioplastics. The variation in the weight ratio of sago starch: chitosan used is 4:1 and 1:1. The volume of glycerol and red fruit oil added was equal, namely 2.5 mL. After bioplastics have been synthesized, tensile strength and elongation tests are carried out. The results showed that the tensile strength and elongation were greatly influenced by the type of plasticizer, both in sago starch:chitosan ratios of 1:1 and 1:4. The addition of red fruit oil significantly reduced the tensile strength, both in the sago starch:chitosan ratio of 1:1 and 1:4, but increased the elongation in the sago starch:chitosan ratio of 1:4. This indicates that red fruit oil can be used as a plasticiser candidate in bioplastics as antioxidant packaging.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTelah dilakukan pemodelan kualitas air terhadap Sungai Gajahwong menggunakan model QUAL2Kw untuk parameter DO-BOD. Diselidiki dinamika DO-BOD sungai tersebut pada kondisi eksisting tahun 2011. Oleh karena beban pencemar pada kondisi hujan dan tanpa hujan berbeda, maka prediksi dilakukan pada kedua kondisi tersebut. Hasil pemodelan QUAL2Kw untuk kondisi eksisting Sungai Gajahwong tahun 2011 menunjukkan bahwa pada kondisi hujan dan tanpa hujan, konsentrasi BOD sungai telah melebihi bakumutu air kelas II. Hasil simulasi menunjukkan bahwa (1) Pembangunan perumahan yang membuang limbah cairnya ke Sungai Gajahwong pada debit total 0,1 m3/s dengan konsentrasi BOD 10 mg/L dapat meningkatkan BOD serta menurunkan DO Sungai Gajahwong, dan (2) Pengelolaan kualitas air dan penanggulangan pencemaran air oleh bahan organik pada Sungai Gajahwong dapat dilakukan dengan strategi pembuatan IPAL komunal di setiap kabupaten dengan penurunan konsentrasi BOD hulu hingga 2 mg/L. ABSTRACTWater quality modelling of Gajahwong River has been done using QUAL2Kw model for DO-BOD parameters. The dynamics of DO-BOD of the river on the existing conditions in 2011 has been investigated. Because of  the load of pollutants in the rainy condition and no rain condition was different, then the predictions made on both conditions. QUAL2Kw modelling results for Gajahwong River in year 2011 showed that the BOD concentration of the river on both conditions has exceeded water quality standards class II. The simulation results showed that: (1) Housing construction that discharge its liquid waste into Gajahwong River on total discharge 0,1 m3/s with concentration of BOD 10 mg/L, increased the BOD and decreased the DO of Gajahwong River, and (2) Water quality management and organic pollution control of Gajahwong River can be done by a strategy of making communal WWTP in each district with reduction of the upstream BOD concentration to 2 mg /L.

Abstract

An analysis of the factors influencing student interest in the Chemistry Study Program and the Chemistry Education Study Program on entrepreneurship in the field of chemistry has been carried out. The population investigated were active students and alumni of the two study programs at the University of Papua, Manokwari class 2013-2021. This research was carried out by analyzing data from questionnaires with a sample size of 139 people in a quantitative descriptive manner, which was carried out in September 2021. The results of the research show that the factors that influence the interest of students in the two study programs towards entrepreneurship in the field of chemistry are personality and study environment with the influence values ​​are 45.3% and 23.8% respectively. The family and social environment have an influence, but it is very small. Therefore, the study program curriculum needs to be structured in such a way as to encourage students' entrepreneurial interest in the field of chemistry.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Gajahwong River is one of the 3 rivers that pass through the city of Yogyakarta. There are many activities carried out by the local community around the riverbank, such as settlements, industry, which have the potential to affect the water quality of the river. This research was aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Gajahwong River in the Balérejo-Wirokertèn segment and to determine the water quality status using the STORET, Pollution Index and Water Quality Index (IKA). This study used primary data which were examined at 7 sampling points between the Balérejo Bridge to the Wirokertèn Dam. The research was conducted in the dry season, June 2022. The water quality parameters were DO, BOD, phosphate, nitrate, Cu, Ag, pH, temperature, total coliform (CT) and TDS. Based on the results after calculating the status of water quality using these three indices, the Gajahwong River in the study segment has exceeded the Class II quality standard. In addition, it was shown that there were 5 parameters that most dominantly affecting the status of water quality, namely: CT, Cu, Ag, BOD, and phosphate. These five parameters contributed greatly to the decline in the water quality of the Gajahwong River, particularly in the Balérejo-Wirokertèn segment. Generally, river water quality of Gajahwong river in this study is between marginal to heavily polluted.

Abstract

Wells are a groundwater source that is widely used by Indonesian citizens for sanitation and hygiene purposes. Well water quality is influenced by internal factors, namely the condition of the well itself, and external factors, namely the environment around the well. This research aims to analyze the quality of well water near the Rendani gas station, Wosi Village, West Manokwari District, Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province and compare it with the necessary water quality standards. In Indonesia, to guarantee the suitability of well water, water quality standards are stipulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Health Republic of Indonesia No. 32 of 2017. The research results show that the TDS, temperature, turbidity, sulfate, nitrate, iron, manganese and pH parameters meet the quality standards, while the chemical parameters nitrite, chromium (VI) and total coliform do not meet the quality standards. Therefore, it is necessary to treat the water to reduce levels of nitrite, chromium (VI) and total coliform before well water is consumed by residents.

Abstract

Beberapa simulasi penentuan status mutu air Sungai Gajahwong, dan analisis pola penyebaran dan pencemaran pada air Sungai Gajahwong telah dilakukan dalam penelitian ini. Segmen yang diteliti berada pada segmen kawasan perkotaan, yakni dari titik Jembatan Balérejo hingga Bendungan Wirokertèn (6,84 km), sebanyak 7 titik pengambilan sampel. Data hasil pengamatan di lapangan kemudian dianalisis menggunakan Qual2Kw. Parameter yang diujikan yakni: pH, nitrat, fosfat, BOD, DO, dan suhu. Penelitian dilakukan pada Juni 2022. Model yang dibangun berdasarkan data input memiliki nilai eror yang rendah (U = 0,09±0,08), sehingga dapat digunakan untuk analisis lanjutan. Hasil analisis skenario menunjukkan beban cemaran pada Sungai Gajahwong telah melampaui daya dukungnya, khusus untuk parameter BOD dan fosfat. Secara alaminya, dengan kondisi beban cemaran eksisting pada T1, maka pada T7 kualitas air sungai diprakirakan mampu melakukan purifikasinya dengan baik. Untuk kondisi eksisting, maka diperlukan pengurangan beban cemaran pada Sungai Gajahwong segmen Balérejo-Wirokertèn 0,7-1,5× lipat untuk parameter BOD dan 4,7× lipat untuk parameter fosfat dari nilai data terakhir.
