Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the sociocultural adjustment and cultural intelligence in Indonesian students who study abroad. Sociocultural adjustment is the ability and competence to adapt in a new environment by facing everyday life difficulties in different cultural contexts. Cultural intelligence is an individual's ability to learn, manage, and interact in order to work effectively with culturally different societies. Cultural intelligence has two dimensions: internalised cultural knowledge intelligence (ICK) and effective cultural flexibility (ECF). Participants in this study were 105 Indonesian students who studied abroad at the time they participate. The data was processed with partial correlation by controlling for sex and the use of English. The results showed that ICK has a significant relation to sociocultural adjustment, while ECF is not significantly related to sociocultural adjustment. The findings highlight the importance of students to deepen the cultural and all aspects of the destination country in order to adapt well.

Abstract

Abstract:Slow learner has limited intellectual abilities, they need more time to learn. They tend to lack of academic motivation because of their academic failure experiences (Kaznowski, 2004; Shaw, 2008). Their capability can be more optimal if they supported by good motivation (Reddy, Ramar Kusuma, 2006). There are some ways to improve students motivation, one of them is involving parent through parent training program. Effective parent training programs change not only parent’s behavior, but also children’s behavior (Matthews Hudson, 2001). This study aims to test the effectiveness of parent training program to improve student motivation (throught motivation contract, reinforcement: tokens, praise and positive feedback). This is single cas study using A-B-A research design. An intervention was design for I, a slow learner who had low motivation in handwriting. Qualitative analysis applied to measure change of behavior before (pre-test) and after intervention (post-test). It shows that parent training program effective in changing parent’s behavior, but less effective in changing children’s behavior.Key words: parent training progmam, motivation, slow learner, handwriting.

Abstract

Changing academic major could have negative impact on the students, such as increased fees and time for college. The intention of changing academic major is related to the mistake in choosing majors due to student’s career indecision. Career indecision is a situation where an individual is experiencing difficulties, having lack of confident in making decisions or cannot commit to college, career or work to be lived. This study aims to see the role of career indecision on the intention of changing academic major among college students. The method used in this study was associative research. Participants in this study consisted of 175 students between 18 to 26 years old who enrolled in Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi, selected with accidental sampling. The result of the study indicates that the career indecision plays a 4.7% share to the intention of changing academic major. Therefore, reducing student’s career indecisions is an alternative solution to decrease the intention of changing academic major.
