Abstract

Population growth, increased housing requirements, and a lack of available land in urban areas motivate developers to construct vertical housing. Vertical occupancy reduces social interaction between occupants, leading to the development of individualistic characteristics. This is due to the fact that the design does not encourage inhabitants to interact with one another. This research seeks to identify the design criteria necessary to construct a social structure in a vertical residence. This study's methodology consisted of three stages: data collection, analysis, and synthesis. Where quantitative and qualitative data are collected using a combined research methodology. Retrieve quantitative data through questionnaires to ascertain the social interaction habits of vertical occupancy users. While qualitative methods, such as literature and precedent studies, such as Home Farm Singapore and The Rosebay Surabaya, are used to identify existing issues. The analysis phase consists of descriptive statistics to interpret the questionnaire results, as well as a description of the analysis based on the research variables used, such as accessibility, users, individuality, adaptability, and others. The results of the synthesis phase will be design criteria that can enhance the social value of vertical housing

Abstract

Abstract The development of the urban population has increased significantly every year, especially in areas close to educational centers such as universities in Surabaya. Where there are scholarships that facilitate student dormitories for 2 full years from various groups, and regions throughout Indonesia, namely AMN Surabaya. The environment of the Indonesian student dormitory needs to support the comfort and mental health of its residents. However, because of cultural differences from sabang to Merauke, students are less adaptable in the Surabaya environment. Therefore, a therapeutic architectural approach is needed in the design of spaces that support psychological and physical health, so this approach is suitable for overcoming problems. This study aims to determine the extent to which the application of therapeutic architectural principles in the design of the National Student Dormitory (AMN) in Surabaya as a form of vertical housing for students. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, by collecting direct observation data and document analysis related to the principles of therapeutic architecture. This study is resulted in an exploration of the potential application of therapeutic architectural principles in the design of student housing, focusing on the case of AMN Surabaya, and contributing to the development of architectural designs that are more humanistic and responsive to the psychological needs of residents.

Abstract

Abstract

Abandoned children in orphanages often face challenges in meeting their psychological and physical needs, which can impact their overall development. Currently, there is still a gap in environmental design that can meet the specific needs of children. Orphanages are a crucial environment for the development of disadvantaged children, where behavioral architecture approach can be one of the solutions to support their psychosocial development. This study aims to examine the application of behavioral architecture to the psychosocial development of children in orphanages. The research method used is a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through direct observation at the orphanage, in-depth interviews with staff, and analysis of documents related to the architectural design of the orphanage. The results show that the application of behavioral architecture approach in the orphanage has not fully met the expected parameters. Although there are some positive aspects, such as increased sense of comfort and security among children in the orphanage space, the room design has not fully suited the age and character of the children. Many rooms require adjustments to meet the specific needs of children, such as more flexible and adaptive spaces to support the development of their creativity, social interaction, and privacy. Therefore, further improvement and adjustment are needed to achieve an ideal orphanage environment for children.
