Abstract

The fungus Candida albicans is a pathogen that can infect the oral cavity, digestive tract, vagina, skin, and other body areas. Red fruit (Pandanus conoideus Lamk.) is one of the plants with several potential secondary metabolites as antimicrobials. This study aimed to determine the phytochemical content and the inhibitory ability of red fruit extract against the fungus C. albicans. This research is an experimental laboratory study using a completely randomized design. The red fruit was obtained from the Pegunungan Bintang. Sample preparation consisted of shelling, drying, and grinding. Extraction of secondary metabolites using the maceration-evaporation method. The red fruit oil extract was tested for phytochemical and inhibitory power. The sample extract concentration was dissolved using Tween 2%. Inhibition test using the Kirby-Bauer method. The results showed that the red fruit extract contained many secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids. These compounds have pharmacological abilities. The methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of red fruit at 80% concentration only had diameters of 5.00 mm and 5.75 mm, respectively. The red fruit extract is not sensitive to C. albicans. This study concludes that red fruit has many secondary metabolites. The growth of the fungus C. albicans ATCC 10231 was not sensitive after being exposed to the red fruit extraction.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs due to various causes, characterized by blood glucose concentrations exceeding normal, and impaired carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism caused by abnormalities in insulin hormone secretion or insulin action abnormalities. Efforts to reduce or detect the distribution of cases of diabetes mellitus require early screening. The screening is done by checking the respondent's blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid. Based on the results of the health examination, which included blood sugar, it showed that from 36 respondents, 6 (16.66%) women had high blood sugar; this should be suspected due to age, consumption patterns, and lack of physical activity. Cholesterol examination results showed that 5 (13.88%) men and 4 (11.11%) women had abnormal blood cholesterol levels; this should be suspected to be influenced by the consumption pattern of foods containing high cholesterol. The results of the uric acid examination showed that 3 (8.33%) men and 4 (11.11%) women had abnormal uric acid levels; this is thought to be due to the habit of people who like to consume see food foods that have high purine content. This community service is essential to increase public awareness to check themselves periodically for their health.

Abstract

Zodia leaves (Evodia suaveolens) are endemic plants of Indonesia originating from Papua, widely known for their natural mosquito-repelling properties. Traditionally, local communities use these leaves by rubbing them directly onto the skin to avoid mosquito and insect bites. Zodia leaves contain active compounds that produce a distinctive aroma disliked by mosquitoes, making them an effective natural repellent. One of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes is malaria, which attacks human red blood cells and is spread through the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. A high population of mosquito larvae and adults in an area increases the risk of malaria transmission. Although vector control is commonly carried out using synthetic insecticides that provide rapid results, these chemicals may lead to negative effects such as insecticide resistance in mosquitoes and environmental pollution. Therefore, safer and more sustainable alternatives for vector control are urgently needed. The use of zodia leaves as a natural mosquito repellent is considered effective and environmentally friendly. This potential should be further explored as an alternative solution in the prevention of vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria, using an approach that prioritizes public health and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Malaria remains a significant public health problem in Papua. Keerom is one of the districts with a high incidence of malaria. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) in comparison to microscopic examination, the gold standard for malaria diagnosis. This descriptive analytic study involved 40 suspected malaria patients at Arso III Health Center, Skanto District, Keerom Regency, Papua. Blood samples were examined using thick blood smears, thin blood smears, and the Care Start RDT. The study employed a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling. Microscopic examination identified five positive cases, corresponding to 12.5 percent, while the RDT detected nine positive cases, representing 22.5 percent of the total. The diagnostic analysis of the RDT revealed a sensitivity of 100 percent, a specificity of 88.6 percent, a positive predictive value of 55.6 percent, and a negative predictive value of 100 percent. The McNemar test showed a significant difference, p = 0.046. RDT proved reliable for excluding malaria, as no false-negative results were found. However, positive results require confirmation by microscopy or PCR to avoid misidentification and treatment errors.
