Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation product of ChatGPT by identifying the errors based on the error taxonomy proposed by Vilar et al. (2006). As AI-powered machine translation (MT) becomes increasingly prevalent, evaluating the quality of the output and identifying specific weaknesses is crucial. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to examine 30 English-to-Indonesian translation outputs generated by ChatGPT. The analysis was guided by Vilar et al.'s error categories: missing words, word order, incorrect words, unknown words, and punctuation. Results show that while ChatGPT performs well in terms of fluency, some errors still occur in the form of incorrect words (33,3%), word orders (23,3%), missing words (20%), and punctuation (13,3%) and unknown words (10%). It can be concluded that the most frequent errors are incorrect words, word orders, and missing words. Proposed solution involves post-editing strategies by adapting translation techniques by Molina and Albir in order to make the translation result more accurate, natural, and aligned with the norms of the target language

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of code switching in the film The Architecture of Love (2024), directed by Teddy Soeriaatmadja. Code switching, the alternation between two or more languages in communication, is commonly observed in multilingual communities and media. The film presents a unique linguistic landscape, as Indonesian and English are frequently interchanged in conversations between Indonesian characters, even without foreign interlocutors. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and Hoffman’s (1991) theory as the main framework. The study identified four types of code switching: Inter-Sentential, Intra-Sentential, Emblematic (Tag Switching), and Establishing Continuity. A total of 125 code switching were found in the film. Intra-Sentential switching was the most dominant (42 06%), followed by Inter-Sentential (33.33%), Emblematic (19.48%), and Establishing Continuity (3.97%). The study also analyzed the reasons behind these switches, with the most common being Talking about a Particular Topic (48%), Being Emphatic about Something (26%), Interjection (20%), and other sociolinguistic functions such as Expressing Group Identity, Quoting somebody else, and Clarification. The findings suggest that code switching in the film is not random but serves communicative, emotional, and identity-related purposes. It reflects the characters’ bilingual competence, emotional expression, and cultural identity, highlighting code switching as a natural and meaningful aspect of urban bilingual communication in Indonesian media.

Abstract

Interpreting is one of the skills that is very necessary in global communication. The use of digital technology and web-based technology in interpreting classes has been widely used in Indonesia, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning interpreting is very challenging, especially directly with native speakers and done using e-learning. This research aims to describe the experience of online interpreting learning with native speakers from the student's perspective regarding the problems and advantages of this learning method. This research was qualitative in nature, involving all sixth semester students in the English Literature study program who took Interpreting Workshop course totaling 25 students. Data were obtained through observation and questionnaires. The finding of the study shows learning interpreting online with native speaker has several advantages as well as it has less psychological impact. It is hoped that after finding problems, solutions can be found to overcome these problems and utilize the advantages of this learning method to maximize learning outcomes.
