Abstract

Slaughtering of sacrificial animals is a worship activity for slaughtering ruminant livestock which is carried out on Eid al-Adha and carried out in mosques or outside Slaughterhouses (RPH). The limited facilities affect the welfare of the animals so that it affects the quality of the meat. Supervision in the production chain with antemortem and postmortem inspections is carried out to obtain good quality meat. This community service aims to help the community get a guarantee of safe, healthy, whole and halal, sacrificial animal meat with antemortem and postmortem examinations, as well as holding counseling on the handling of sacrificial animals and meat during the covid-19 pandemic through webinars. The activity was carried out in 13 mosques in the areas of Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Gresik, and Pasuruan. The antemortem examination will be held on 19-22 July 2021 followed by a post-mortem examination which will be held on 20-22 July 2021 with a total number of 112 cows, 220 goats and 1 sheep. The Webinar was held earlier, namely on July 14, 2021, by 3 competent speakers. The webinar was attended by the general public, mosque takmir, lecturers, and students. The results of the antemortem examination indicated that the animals were suitable for slaughter, although 2–6 (0.6–1.8%) animals showed diarrhea, nasal and eye discharge, and infection of the prepuce. The results of postmortem examination stated that the animals were fit for consumption with a note that the organs infected with worms had to be removed, namely 15.2% of the liver of cattle and 0.9% of the liver of goats with fasciolosis, 0.5% of goats experiencing parampistomiasis and 1.7% of cattle experiencing eurytrematosis.

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate the potency of Citrus aurantiifolia Swingle and sea salt solution as a promising cleansing agent for edible bird’s nests (EBNs). Ascorbic acid, sodium, and chloride analyses of the C. aurantiifolia Swingle and sea salt solution were conducted using HPLC, ICP-OES, and titrimetry, respectively. The characteristics of physical samples and hydrogen peroxide detection were examined in this study. The reduction activity of the Citrus aurantiifolia Swingle and sea salt solution on the nitrite of 120 white EBNs was studied. This nitrite reduction activity was compared with the available method (standard), drinking water method, 6% C. aurantiifolia Swingle extraction method, and sea salt water. An organoleptic test was performed by three trained panelists to determine the color of the samples before and after treatments. The results showed that the C. aurantiifolia Swingle and sea salt solution contained 0.27 mg/100 mL of ascorbic acid, 76370.93 mg/L of sodium, and 7555.61 mg/100 mL of chloride. In comparison results, the C. aurantiifolia Swingle and sea salt solution can reduce nitrite levels up to 86%, remove hydrogen peroxide, and improve the natural color of EBNs. The present study provides the first potential future cleansing agent for EBNs.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is a global issue that has become the center of world attention. Transmission to humans through pets is important to be aware of. This research was conducted to determine the presence of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli bacteria in cats. A total of 60 swab samples were taken, consisting of 30 stray cats samples and 30 domestic cats samples. Samples were tested at the Veterinary Health Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University, Surabaya. The samples were then isolated and identified using differential selective media Eosin Methylene Blue Agar. Escherichia coli isolates were then subjected to a sensitivity test to determine resistance to the antibiotics ampicillin, tetracycline and streptomycin. The results showed that 83% of the samples contained Escherichia coli bacteria in cats, with 16% antibiotic resistance to the antibiotic ampicillin, 19% in stray cats, and 12% in domestic cats. Resistance to tetracycline antibiotics shows 12%, where stray cats are 15%, and domestic cats are 8%. Meanwhile resistance to the antibiotic streptomycin showed 4% (2/50), with resistance in stray cats 8% and in domestic cats no resistance was found (0%). Cats, as animals that have a close relationship with human life, can be a factor in transmitting antimicrobial resistance, this is an early precaution as a measure to prevent the transmission of antimicrobial resistance to humans.
