Abstract

This research aims to determine if the jigsaw technique is effective for improving grammar mastery in writing recount texts compared to conventional methods. Using a quasi-experimental design, two classes of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Siantar were studied. The experimental class was taught using the Jigsaw technique, while the control class used conventional methods. Both classes received pretests and posttests to assess their understanding. The experimental class's average scores increased from 54 to 80.46, whereas the control class's scores rose from 53.21 to 71.21. The results, with a t-value of 2.44 compared to a t-table value of 2.00, indicate that the Jigsaw technique significantly improves students' ability to write recount texts, rejecting the null hypothesis.

Abstract

Discourse Analysis (DA) has emerged as a critical instrument in social sciences to uncover power dynamics and social realities, particularly within the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, researchers often encounter methodological ambiguity when selecting the most appropriate framework among diverse linguistic traditions. This study conducts a critical comparative analysis of three dominant paradigms: M.A.K. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, Teun A. van Dijk’s Socio-Cognitive Approach, and Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (as discussed in O'Regan, 2021). Using a qualitative library research method, this study deconstructs the epistemological foundations and analytical tools of each approach. The findings indicate that Halliday’s framework offers a microscopic lens on textual texture and register, van Dijk’s approach bridges text and society through cognitive mental models, while Fairclough’s model examines the dialectical relationship between language and institutional power. The study concludes with a comparative matrix, providing a methodological roadmap for researchers to align these frameworks with specific social inquiries, such as education, inequality, or policy analysis.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly for students at the secondary school level. However, many students still experience difficulties in understanding narrative texts due to limited vocabulary, low motivation, and monotonous teaching media. This study aims to improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts through the use of Picture Series as an instructional medium. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a quantitative approach and was conducted with tenth-grade students of a vocational high school. The research was implemented in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The data were collected through reading comprehension tests and classroom observations. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the mean score and the percentage of students achieving the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM ≥ 75). The results showed that students’ reading comprehension improved significantly. In Cycle I, the mean score was 53 with only 6.67% of students achieving the KKM. After improvements were made in Cycle II through more systematic use of Picture Series, the mean score increased to 82, and 83.33% of students achieved the KKM. These findings indicate that Picture Series effectively support students in understanding narrative text structures and sequences of events. Therefore, Picture Series can be recommended as an effective instructional medium for teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts.

Abstract

The Indonesian digital communication landscape is characterized by massive code-mixing (CM) phenomena reflecting Gen Z's hybrid identity. This study aims to synthesize CM semantic trends on digital platforms (TikTok , Instagram, WhatsApp) for the 2015-2025 period using Geoffrey Leech's seven types of meaning framework. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on PRISMA 2020 protocols, 25 high-quality articles (average MMAT score of 82%) were thematically analyzed. Findings indicate that CM is not a language deficit but a Society 5.0 adaptive strategy dominated by connotative (38%) and affective (28%) meanings to build cyber solidarity. Despite its prevalence, a pedagogical gap was identified where 68% of studies ignore social-reflective dimensions and the national curriculum remains laggard in responding to these dynamics. This study recommends a reorientation of digital literacy through contextual semantic modules to bridge language competence disparities in the global era.

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays an important role in English language learning because it enables students to construct meaning, acquire knowledge, and develop language proficiency. However, many vocational school students still experience serious difficulties in understanding descriptive texts, which are an important part of the English language curriculum. Previous studies have highlighted that students often experience difficulties due to limited vocabulary, insufficient knowledge of grammar, lack of background understanding, and low motivation. However, few studies have examined this issue in the context of vocational education. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students' difficulties in understanding descriptive texts at SMK Swasta 1 Tamansiswa Pematangsiantar. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method involving observation, interviews, and document analysis to identify the types and causes of students' difficulties. The results of the study show that the main problems experienced by students are a lack of vocabulary mastery, difficulty recognizing the general structure of descriptive texts, misunderstanding of main ideas and specific information, and confusion about grammar, especially in the use of simple tenses and adjectives. In addition, low reading motivation and over-reliance on translation tools also have a negative impact on students' comprehension. This study concludes that these difficulties arise from linguistic, cognitive, and affective factors. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for teachers to design more effective reading strategies and improve students' understanding of descriptive texts in English as a foreign language.

Abstract

This study analyzes the experiential metafunction in Christina Perri’s song A Thousand Years using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, with emphasis on the transitivity system. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed by segmenting the lyrics into clauses and identifying process types, participants, and circumstances. The analysis reveals six process types, with mental processes dominating (39%), followed by relational (28%) and material processes (22%), while verbal, behavioral, and existential processes appear minimally. The findings indicate that the song constructs meaning primarily through emotional expression, psychological states, and identity rather than physical action. Linguistically, the transitivity patterns represent themes of eternal love, fear, hope, and emotional endurance. This study demonstrates that song lyrics serve as meaningful linguistic data for exploring experiential meaning and may be effectively applied in language learning contexts, particularly in the teaching of functional grammar and discourse analysis.

Abstract

Abstract

This mini-research investigates the impact of the Merdeka Curriculum on enhancing critical thinking skills among Indonesian students. Fostering critical thinking has become essential for both academic success and societal participation as educational contexts change. The Indonesian Ministry of Education launched the Merdeka Curriculum with the goal of establishing a flexible, student-centered learning environment that prioritizes creativity and critical thinking. The study examines the literature to determine important results and difficulties related to the implementation of this curriculum using a descriptive qualitative methodology that incorporates library research and systematic literature reviews. Results show that students' analytical abilities and engagement are greatly enhanced by project-based and experiential learning, which encourages deeper learning. The efficacy of the curriculum is hampered by issues including poor teacher preparation, a lack of resources, and pressure on students to choose their courses. This study emphasizes how important it is to resolve these implementation challenges in order to optimize the Merdeka Curriculum's advantages. The curriculum may greatly aid in the development of critical thinkers equipped to handle the complexity of the contemporary world by creating a supportive learning environment and empowering both instructors and students.

Abstract

This paper investigates communicative purposes of the use of abbreviations in Discord chats based on the Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) framework. Over three months, 500 chat messages in five Discord servers of gaming, educational and hobby communities were gathered. The study found four types of abbreviations, including initialisms (42%), phonological reductions (28%), Gen Z slang (22%), and alphanumeric replacements (8%). Results show that abbreviations have four main communicative purposes, namely, structural efficiency, tone modulation pragmatically, interactional continuity, and social identity construction. Abbreviations are multi-purpose resources that can only have sense in a context of negotiation, and at the same time they carry semantic, pragmatic, and social indexicalities. Such immense popularity of Gen Z forms like fr, ngl and no cap suggests that abbreviations have become sociolinguistic signifiers of belonging to a culture and generational identity. This paper has made a contribution to digital linguistics by enlightening on the influence of abbreviations in establishment of connotation and social bond within virtual communities.
