Abstract

Many students have difficulties in writing discussion text, such as difficult to deliver contrasting ideas in one topic, no interest in the topic and inappropriate strategy or media when doing teaching and learning process. Considering such problems, an appropriate teaching technique is needed to help students improve their ability in writing discussion text. This paper is aimed at explaining how to use small group discussion in writing discussion text. Small group discussion is conducted by making several groups of students consist of six. In implementing small group discussion, the teacher shows the news to the students to stimulate them to give their arguments about the issue presented. Then, the teacher shows the discussion text related to the news given. Next, the teacher gives the students different topics for each group to be discussed. After finishing the discussion, the students write their own discussion text in the group. Finally, the students who are the representatives of each group present their discussion text in front of the class. The objective of this paper is to help the students to stimulate their critical thinking so that they can deliver their opinions in writing a discussion text.Key words: Writing, Discussion Text, Small Group Discussion

Abstract

This paper is aimed at describing the use of ‘Murder Mystery Game’ in teaching speaking recount texts to senior high shchool students. This game is applied to motivate senior high school students to speak English. This game enables  students to solve the problem by using the clues given to them. ‘Murder Mystery Game’ allows the students to share ideas to other students by giving some steps to accomplish. Those steps are interviewing character, discussing in group to find the murderer, and discovering the murderer and telling it to the class in form of oral recount texts.

Abstract

This article aims to explain how English teachers can use Hot Seat Game to improve the students’ speaking ability at Senior High School. This Game aims to encourage students to be more active to speak English through group activities. To play this game, teacher by deviding students into several groups of 4-5 students. The teacher will choose one student to become a Hot Seat Member, and give the students questions. The questions given by the teacher can be a picture or cards that contains the words. The student who become a Hot Seat Member will guess the picture or the card without looking at it. Through Hot Seat Game, students will be encouraged to speak English to give signs to his friend who became the Hot Seat Member.

Abstract

This paper was aimed to explain the use of Learning CommunityStrategyin learning speaking for Junior High School. In this paper was explained how Learning Communityimproved students’ ability for Junior High School. Speaking is one of skills needs to be comprehended by students, but there are many problems in learning process. Therefore, Learning Communitybecame a good method for teacher to use in learning speaking. In Learning Community, learning activities was done in groups . The students was divided into groups in order to know each other to assess their cooperation in Learning Community. It is not only developing the students’ social life, but also building a good relationship between students and teacher especially in speaking English.

Abstract

This paper’s aim is to explain how to use paper airplane game in reviewing students’ vocabulary. Elementary school students’ vocabulary (in knowing and understanding the vocabulary) relatively average because of some factors that are lacks of motivation and the use of inappropriate way of teaching in the classroom. Paper airplane game is one of the way of teaching that can be used by the teacher to overcome the problems. Paper airplane game helps students to improve their vocabulary comprehension that have been learned before. The steps in using paper airplane game are brainstorming, discussing about the material, and playing the paper airplane game. In brainstorming, teacher shows several pictures related to the material along with general questions about the pictures after that. The next step is discussing about the material, teacher will put the students in-group and they will discuss about the material guide by the questions given by the teacher. The next step is playing paper airplane game, teacher will guide the students in playing this game that will help them in improving the vocabulary that has been taught. And the last steps is concluding. In this step, the teacher make the conclusion about the material.

Abstract

The use of technology in the term of teaching is really helpful. The use of technique with technology based in teaching English is expected to improve the ability of students in learning English. Speaking is one of the basic ability which is not easy to master without appropriate technique. One of the obstacles for students in speaking English is students are lack of understanding of what they say, so they do not really comprehend speaking skill thoroughly. Storytelling is one of the techniques that is commonly used in teaching English. With the use of technology, storytelling can be digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is a storytelling that is produced in the form of video. In this paper, students are asked to make a story about his friend, which is the final result is in the form of video. In its stages, firstly, students are asked to make a draft about the video they are going to make. After completing the draft, students continue to the next stage which is editing the video. It consists of music background, quotes, the voice over, or also pictures. By implementing this technique, students are expected can improve their speaking skill in learning English.

Abstract

Speaking competence is one of the basic competences for senior high scool students. However, there are some problems that mostly emerge in the teaching of speaking competence, specifically in reading news item text. The problems are the lack of students English vocabularies, their lack of comprehension in using grammatically correct sentence and the discomfort they feel caused by the lack of creativity of teachers in managing the learning process in classroom. In order that students could comprehend news item text, the writer selects group investigation as a technique used in teaching this topic. This technique is applied in whilst-teaching phase by giving students half of the news text as their task to investigate the text given. By using group investigation, it is expected that teachers could maximalize their roles in increasing  students’ speaking competence. The writer also hopes that the technique used could give positive contibutions in teaching speaking competences in order to improve students’ competence in conveying the the news.
