Abstract

In this study, the writer has two main aims. They are (1) to explain how morality is portrayed in the novel and (2) to explain how morality is questioned through absurdity. This study is a qualitative analysis. The data were collected by reading, identifying, and classifying excerpts from the novel and analyzed by interpreting process of elucidating the binary opposition which later was reversed (the hierarchy) by applying Derrida’s deconstruction theory. After conducting this study, the writer came at two conclusions. First, the morality in The Outsiders was portrayed by appearances and judgments, neglecting various factors such as reasons, conditions, and motives behind particular actions. Second, considering other factors mentioned before, the writer implied that most of those moral-immoral things portrayed in the novel were merely bias. In oversimplified words, morality is an idea comes from one’s perspective (subjective), yet many people thought they could differ the right from the wrong. Thinking those entire possibilities, raised fundamental question, is not morality so absurd? Does morality even exist in the first place?

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate social actors' representation on the inauguration of Acting Governor in West Java 2018, from Ahmad Heryawan (Aher), representing the Right Islamic Party, to Commissioner General Mochamad Iriawan (Iwan), representing the Nationalist Party, in the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) Theo van Leeuwen model (2008). Method of data collection were the method of reading, namely the intensive and comprehensive reading. We read the social actor’s representations that were represented in mass media online: Republika.co.id during 3 days of news, on 18, 19, and 20 of June 2018 where there was a lot of polemics over the Irawan’s inauguration. The Republika.co.id was more inclined than supported the inauguration, though according to Indonesian Government, it was legal because in that moment Irawan was as Main Secretary of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas), not as an active Chief of Police in Special Capital Region, Jakarta. The data were obtained by copying-paste technique. The analytical methods used were descriptions, interpretations, and explanations. The results of the analysis showed that all pro-government social actors, both in government and "outside the government", supported Irawan's inauguration as acting governor of West Java. On the other hand, social actors who did not support the inauguration are reported as social actors who obey the constitution, educate the people, encourage honesty, uphold democracy and so on. That was why, Irawan's inauguration as acting governor in West Java was reported negatively, such as unconstitutional inauguration, fooling people, violating democracy, public deception, and so on. The difference of the social actors’ representation above was undeniable due to differences in the ideology (nationalism versus Islamism) and political interest ahead of the presidential election last year, in 2019. Thus, it proves that the study of CDA perspective can show us the relationship between language use (discourse), ideology, ‘hidden’ power and also discourse and social practice.

Abstract

Drama for teaching English for elementary school students is a real communicationinvolving ideas, emotions, feelings, and adaptations. Drama in young learners (YL)classrooms allows shy students to “hide behind” the character when they speakEnglish. There are some reasons underlying the use of drama for teaching English toyoung learners: (a) Drama helps children to activate language and have fun. Itencourages children to speak and allows to communicate, even with limited language, using nonverbal communication, such as body movements and facial expressions; (b)Drama is familiar to children. Dramatizing has been a part of children's lives sincetheir early age. They pretend to be adults in situations that are close to the reality. Theyalso behave as adults when they play their roles; (c) Drama helps children build theirconfidence. It means that by taking on a role, children can escape from everydayidentity. This is useful for children who are reluctant to use English or who do not likeworking in groups; (d) Drama dynamically nurtures children's cooperative ability in agroup.Kata Kunci : drama, media pengajaran, young learners

Abstract

The existing quality of learning media, particularly in teaching multilingual characters of Early Childhood Education, poses a challenge in education. Teachers should possess the skills to continuously innovate in creating instructional materials, including prospective teachers, namely PGSD and PGMI students. This program aims to enhance the skills of PGSD and PGMI students in developing multilingual character education media for children. The primary focus is on using children's songs as an engaging and effective educational tool. Another issue is the need for more skills among students in creating multilingual and character-based instructional media that can captivate children's interest. The ultimate goal is to improve students' skills in creating engaging and effective instructional media, providing benefits to children, and contributing positive knowledge to the general public. As a solution, this program creates a simple arrangement of children's songs with characters in three languages as instructional media for PGSD and PGMI students. In its implementation, students are equipped with the skills to create simple arrangements of children's songs with the hope that this will serve as valuable preparation for creating engaging instructional materials.

Abstract

The teaching of English literary works in a foreign language context remains a textual-oriented activity. Students were required to comprehend the linguistic and thematic features of the texts. However, more often than not, students were not aware of the real sociocultural, economic, and political conditions from which the text was based because they focused more on understanding the textual contents of the text. In Indonesia where English was still considered as a foreign language, the phenomenon was common. This paper examined the results of a contextual approach given to students when discussing a literary text. The contextual approach was implemented in three stages: pre-reading activities; reading, discussing, and analyzing the text by paying attention to its linguistic features and plot; and connecting the text with real-life situations. The study involved 31 English Literature students at Universitas Negeri Semarang from the third semester. The text discussed was a short story titled “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders” which contained feminist issues. The researchers also used questionnaires and observed the students’ activities during the three stages to enrich the data. The results revealed that the approach helped the students to understand feminist issues more comprehensively. They were able to relate the circumstances depicted in the story with the real sociocultural, economic, and political conditions of the society where the story was based. The results also suggested that the method was effective in developing the students’ literacy skills.
