Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine gender representation in the English for Nusantara textbook for Grade VIII and to explore students’ perceptions of these representations. The research method employed is a qualitative approach involving critical discourse analysis and semi-structured interviews. The analysis draws on Van Dijk’s Socio-cognitive Approach to examine how gender is represented semantically, syntactically, rhetorically, and visually. Data was collected from a criteria-based sample of two students at SMP Negeri 10 Cirebon, both of whom demonstrated strong English proficiency. The results showed revealed that male characters are predominantly represented in active, central roles across stories, visuals, and sentence structures.  In contrast, female characters tend to occupy background or passive roles and are often linked with emotional, domestic, or supportive functions. The use of language also shows a significant disparity in pronoun frequency and character traits, with males described using positive and dynamic adjectives, while females are more often associated with personal appearance and social limitations. The findings suggest that textbooks should strive for balanced portrayals to avoid reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes.

Abstract

This study investigates the opinions of English teachers in Indonesian primary schools on Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Interviews and document analysis were used to collect data from three teachers using a qualitative descriptive method. The results indicate that although teachers place a high value on communicative competence, curriculum demands, student motivation, and resource constraints frequently cause classroom practices to combine CLT with grammar-focused instruction. Despite obstacles like huge class sizes and inadequate training, teachers adapt CLT through task-based activities, group projects, scaffolding, and culturally relevant resources. The study emphasizes that in order to improve communicative language learning in EFL classes, professional development, contextual adaptability, and supportive policies are necessary.

Abstract

The speech delivered by Indonesia’s Minister of Defense and President-elect, Prabowo Subianto, at the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2025, in New York, has drawn significant national and international attention for its emphasis on self-reliance, global justice, and nationalistic values. This study aims to reveal the representation of national identity and the underlying political ideology embedded in the speech through Norman Fairclough’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The primary data were obtained from the official video recording of the speech released through government media channels, as well as from a verified transcript. The analysis focuses on three main dimensions text, discourse practice, and social practice to identify how language functions as an ideological instrument in constructing Indonesia’s national image within an international forum. The findings indicate that Prabowo employs linguistic strategies that highlight global solidarity while underscoring national sovereignty, reflecting a moderate nationalism intertwined with the discourse of global justice. In conclusion, the speech serves not only as a form of diplomatic communication but also as a symbolic representation of Indonesia’s national identity within the framework of contemporary geopolitics.

Abstract

This research unpacks the phenomenon of code mixing among Generation Z students and its repercussion on English speaking skills. Using a qualitative descriptive case study, the study was conducted with second-semester English education students at Prima Bangsa Institute, Cirebon. Data were collected through classroom observation and interviews, both directly and via online forms, to capture authentic communication. The analysis applies Soewito’s (1985) and Callhavid’s (2010) theory of code mixing types, including word, phrase, reduplication, hybrid, idiom, and clause insertion, as well as Hoffman’s (1991) theory of functions such as expressing topics, empathy, interjections, clarification, group identity, and quoting others. The results show that students frequently mix Indonesian and English, influenced by digital culture and social media, to communicate more flexibly and naturally. Furthermore, code mixing supports their speaking development by expanding vocabulary, improving pronunciation, enhancing comprehension, and boosting confidence.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Audio-Lingual Repetition Drills (ALRD) in improving speaking and listening skills of EFL learners. A quantitative design was conducted with 60 vocational high school students in West Java, Indonesia, using speaking and listening tests along with questionnaires. Data were analyzed through IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The speaking test, assessed by an analytic rubric, recorded an average score of 79.53, while the listening test, consisting of 20 multiple-choice items, showed an average of 77.85. Both results fall into the “good” category, with improvements especially in fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.691, p < 0.05) was found between speaking and listening, showing that improvement in one skill supported gains in the other. Students also indicated that repetition drills increased their confidence and focus. This study highlights the practical application of ALRD in English teaching, particularly in vocational schools, and provides new evidence of its integrated effect on both speaking and listening skills

Abstract

The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education has raised pedagogical and ethical concerns regarding its role in academic writing. This study investigates students’ views on the anticipated functions, perceived benefits, and challenges of AI-assisted academic writing. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed, involving 89 second-year students with prior experience using GenAI tools. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that most students perceive GenAI as a writing assistant (85%) and feedback provider (78%). A substantial proportion report increased writing efficiency (82%) and improved writing quality (76%) when using GenAI tools. However, concerns regarding over-dependence (45%) and potential plagiarism risks (32%) were also identified. Overall, students position GenAI as a supportive pedagogical aid that enhances drafting and revision processes while acknowledging important ethical and cognitive challenges. These findings highlight the need for structured instructional guidance and the development of AI literacy to ensure responsible and pedagogically aligned integration of GenAI in academic writing instruction.
