Abstract

When translating a message, a translator needs to identify the most equivalent natural expression in Target Language (TL). Nevertheless, it is not always feasible to discover the corresponding translation for culturally specific text. The translators frequently need various procedures to accomplish the translation tasks. This study examines the procedures used in translating Islamic terms and the most common procedures used by translators in the book "Reclaim Your Heart and its translation. The researcher employed a qualitative method for collecting descriptive data by explaining the translation procedures provided by Newmark. The data was gathered by analyzing Islamic terms in the source language (SL) and target language (TL) texts, categorizing terms according to the translation procedures used. After analyzing the data, four types of translation procedures were found in thirty-four pieces of data. They are transference, couplet, naturalization, and cultural equivalent. The most common translation procedure used in translating Islamic terms by the translator is transference. The translator maintained the English Islamic terms (SL) in Indonesian text (TL) without some linguistic changes (phonological or morphological). This approach was used for translating proper names, places, verses, the book's title, and the terms used several times in the book.

Abstract

This research dissects “The Truman Show” using metaphor, simile, and personification to expose concealed symbolism. The study employs a qualitative method, scrutinizing the film’s script based on X.J. Kennedy’s theory. Data is gathered through film observation and noting the usage of these literary devices. The film primarily uses personification (41.2%), followed by metaphor (35.3%) and simile (23.5%). These devices stimulate viewers to question reality and the media’s impact. They underscore the significance of privacy in genuine life experiences. The film serves as a warning, revealing how turning real life into entertainment can dehumanize individuals and reminding us of the value of privacy as a crucial part of a genuine life experience. The study follows a systematic process, including outlining the topic, creating the thesis layout, gathering information from the film and online research, and analyzing the symbols and meanings in the thesis. The research provides insights into human experiences and the impact of media on our perception of reality. Keywords: The Truman Show, Concealed Symbolism, Metaphors, Similes, and Personifications

Abstract

Writing in a foreign language is one of the most challenging skills. Consequently, grammar errors continue to be a significant challenge in writing for individuals learning English as a second language. Analyzing the errors made by EFL students is essential as they offer valuable insights into the second language acquisition process. This study aimed to identify the main kinds of grammatical issues and the key sources of grammatical errors in students' recount text. This research was conducted as a descriptive qualitative study. This study focused on the texts produced by first-semester students in the Information System Department during the General English Classroom. The data were identified and examined using the error theory proposed by Dulay et al. (1982) on surface approach taxonomy and the concept of the source of errors introduced by Brown (2007). The data revealed that the predominant type of grammatical error was misformation, with 35 errors or 37.33% of the total errors. The predominant source of grammatical errors was intralingual transfer, leading to 48 errors, which constituted 43.43% of the overall total.
