Abstract

Background. Inclusive Islamic education faces challenges in supporting students with mild intellectual disabilities, particularly in memorizing prayer recitations that require sequential recall, accurate pronunciation, and sustained attention. Cognitive limitations often reduce students’ independence in performing religious practices, highlighting the need for adaptive instructional strategies. Purpose. This study examines the use of Direct Instruction in inclusive Islamic education and analyzes its role in improving prayer memorization among students with mild intellectual disabilities. Method. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted using passive classroom observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, school leaders, special education assistants, parents, and students, as well as document analysis. Data were analyzed through an interactive process of data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. Results. The findings show that Direct Instruction, applied through explicit modeling, repeated guided practice, task segmentation, and positive reinforcement, improved students’ prayer memorization. Improvements were observed in cognitive aspects (accuracy and sequence), affective aspects (motivation and confidence), and psychomotor aspects (clarity of recitation). Conclusion. Direct Instruction is an effective and adaptive approach for inclusive Islamic education, supporting religious learning among students with mild intellectual disabilities and strengthening inclusive pedagogical practices in Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of forming students’ religious character in senior high schools as part of national education goals, as well as the existing gap between religious understanding and its implementation in daily life. This study aims to examine the effect of Islamic Spiritual Activities (Rohani Islam) and the role modeling of Islamic Education teachers on the religious character of tenth-grade students at SMAN 5 Berau, both partially and simultaneously. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The population consisted of all tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Berau, with a sample of 82 students selected using random sampling techniques. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that Islamic Spiritual Activities have a significant effect on students’ religious character, Islamic Education teachers’ role modeling has a significant effect on students’ religious character, and both variables simultaneously have a significant influence on students’ religious character. This study concludes that strengthening school-based religious activities supported by exemplary behavior from Islamic Education teachers is an effective strategy for developing students’ religious character in public high schools.

Abstract

The development of online games among secondary school students has become a phenomenon that is inseparable from adolescent life and carries serious implications for character formation, particularly learning discipline, self-control, and religious character. Uncontrolled intensity of online game use has the potential to shift students’ priorities from academic and spiritual activities toward instant entertainment-oriented activities. This study aims to analyze holistic pedagogical strategies in Islamic education in reducing the negative impacts of online games on students’ character. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with research subjects consisting of the school principal, Islamic Education teachers, Guidance and Counseling teachers, and students at SMA Negeri 5 Berau. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, while data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The results indicate that online games have an impact on declining learning discipline, weakened self-control, and reduced consistency of students’ worship practices. Nevertheless, the implementation of holistic pedagogical strategies that integrate spiritual, emotional, social, and pedagogical development through the role of Islamic Education teachers as mu’allim, murabbi, muaddib, counselors, and mediators has proven capable of helping students manage online game use more wisely and strengthen religious character. This study affirms that holistic pedagogy in Islamic education has a strategic role in addressing the challenges of student character formation in the digital era.

Abstract

Independent learning is an essential competence that needs to be developed from the elementary school level to support students’ long-term academic success. One factor assumed to influence independent learning is learning discipline. This study aimed to examine the effect of learning discipline on independent learning among fourth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah Kreatif Kraksaan, Probolinggo Regency, and to determine the extent of its contribution. This research employed a quantitative approach using an explanatory associative method. The population consisted of 32 fourth-grade students, and a saturated sampling technique was applied. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression using SPSS version 27. The results showed that learning discipline had a positive and significant effect on students’ independent learning (t = 2.385; Sig. = 0.024 < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.159) indicated that learning discipline contributed 15.9% to the variation in independent learning. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening learning discipline to foster independent learning in elementary school students.

Abstract

Contemporary education is increasingly dominated by instrumental rationality that prioritizes cognitive performance, efficiency, and competitiveness, often marginalizing learners’ moral and spiritual development. Within Islamic education, this tendency generates epistemological and ethical challenges manifested in value disorientation, weakened moral integrity, and fragile character formation. This study aims to formulate a conceptual model for the internalization of the spiritual values of Surah Al-Fatihah as the foundation of Islamic character education. Employing a qualitative library-based approach with a conceptual-analytical orientation, the study draws on authoritative classical Qur’anic exegesis as primary sources and contemporary Islamic educational literature as supporting references. Data are analyzed through systematic content analysis encompassing descriptive, interpretative, and applicative-synthetic stages, guided by the double movement approach to ensure contextual relevance while preserving normative substance. The findings reveal that Surah Al-Fatihah embodies a fundamental, hierarchical, and integrative structure of spiritual values, including tawhid, ‘ubudiyyah, rahmah, gratitude, guidance, and eschatological accountability. These values are mapped into three interrelated dimensions of Islamic character education spiritual orientation (ta’alluq billah), moral disposition (akhlaqiyyah), and social responsibility (insaniyyah) and synthesized into a conceptual model linking educational aims, learning content, pedagogical strategies, institutional culture, and character assessment. Overall, the study positions Surah Al-Fatihah as an epistemological and pedagogical foundation for ta’dib-oriented Islamic character education in addressing contemporary moral and spiritual challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to conceptually examine the integration of spirituality in Al-Ghazali’s thought and communicative rationality as proposed by Jürgen Habermas as a foundation for developing a holistic educational paradigm. The analysis focuses on how these two perspectives can be understood as bases for human formation through educational processes, as well as on identifying their points of convergence, differences, and potential integration within an educational framework that encompasses both spiritual and dialogical-rational dimensions. This research employs a literature study method by examining the primary works of Al-Ghazali and Habermas, along with relevant scholarly sources addressing education, spirituality, and rationality. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali’s thought emphasizes spirituality, morality, and character formation as essential value orientations in education, highlighting that educational processes should not merely prioritize cognitive development but also moral and spiritual cultivation. In contrast, Habermas’s theory of communicative rationality underscores the importance of rational, critical, and distortion-free dialogue as a means of fostering reflective and participatory individuals within social life. The integration of these two perspectives offers a holistic educational model that harmonizes spiritual value orientation with dialogical and rational pedagogical practices. Thus, education can contribute to the formation of individuals who are not only morally grounded and spiritually aware but also capable of critical thinking, argumentative communication, and constructive participation in pluralistic and democratic societies.
