Abstract

Bachelor Thesis (BT) is the requirement for university students to obtain a degree. The Introduction chapter, to some extent, becomes a challenging task to do, like the role that it upholds. Swales (2004), on his model of Create-a-Research-Space (CARS), has given a guideline in composing the introduction chapter using three moves: establishing a territory, establishing a niche, and occupying the niche. This study aims to analyze 32 BT’s introduction chapter in one of English Major of State Islamic Colleges in Indonesia by employing CARS model as the framework. Also, the lexical signal in the rhetorical structure is considered. The results demonstrated that the moves occurrences do not thoroughly perform the rhetorical structure given in the CARS model. This study suggests that academic writing is necessary for students to seek a higher-education path must be equipped with an awareness of structuring arguments. To become successful academic writers, undergraduates need to improve their linguistic competence, syntactic fluency, and lexical capacity to write analytically, competently, and persuasively.

Abstract

This study aims to explain key factors exacerbating listening outside EFL classrooms based on the perception of English major students in a Papua university. To facilitate a comprehensive investigation into a specific real-life scenario and to enrich the researcher's understanding of the individual or incident under study, a qualitative case study design was employed. We involved thirty students majoring in English education in a university in Papua, Indonesia. Data collection was carried out using the triangulation method including reflective journals, Focus Group discussions, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show some factors promoting listening difficulties perceived by the Indonesian students: accent, tempo, dialect, and intonation. Additional factors may exist that were not raised during the data collection process. These may have been identified if more participants were interviewed. However, the sample size was limited due to time constraints. Then, measuring the impact of each factor in a quantitative study may also yield useful data.

Abstract

In Papua, Indonesia, English education is situated within a unique policy context in which the Special Autonomy Law mandates English as a second language, yet it is often taught as a foreign language in practice. This discrepancy has contributed to challenges in developing students’ speaking proficiency. This study aimed to explore the mismatch between 7th-grade students’ learning styles and teachers’ instructional strategies in a junior high school in Sorong, Indonesia with the goal of proposing more adaptive teaching approaches. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining the VARK learning style questionnaire with qualitative interviews to gather data on students' preferences and classroom practices. The results showed that aligning teaching strategies with students’ diverse learning styles significantly improved their speaking skills. These findings underscored the importance of implementing adaptive instructional methods to meet varied learning needs and enhance English language proficiency among junior high school learners in Indonesia. This research contributes to the growing evidence supporting learning style-based instruction, particularly in the context of English language education in Indonesian junior high schools.

Abstract

Language Policy of English as a Second Language (ESL) in Papua has been established by the Special Autonomy Law in 2021. This is pivotal in educational practices in a multilingual context. Despite this, significant concerns remain, especially about teachers’ involvement and the execution of the regulation. The gap policy arises from the previous studies highlighting the policy intention and classroom practices. This study aims to explore the gaps in the policy due to three main themes, namely communication gaps, structural and professional support, and socio-cultural tensions and language ideologies. A qualitative study was conducted by applying in-depth interviews with 6 teachers from several regencies in West Papua and Southwest Papua Province. Thematic analysis exposed three main challenges: (1)  policy communication gaps; (2) limited structural and professional support; (3) socio-cultural tensions and language ideologies. This study shows that the success of ESL policy depends on the provincial government's engagement, sustained teacher training, and culturally sensitive curriculum to local wisdom. Ultimately, this research contributes to the discourse of language policy in multilingual contexts, emphasizing the respect for local values and adjusting to the multilingual context, like Papua.

Abstract

Gamified learning is widely recognized as an engaging instructional approach that can enhance students' motivation by incorporating elements of play, challenge, and reward. While motivation plays a crucial role in the learning process, it is important to examine whether it truly correlates with language competence, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning.  This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ learning motivation in gamified English learning and their English competence. The participants were 30 fifth-grade students (aged 10–12) from a private primary school in Indonesia, selected through total sampling. A quantitative correlational method was used, employing a motivation questionnaire based on Keller’s ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction), and English achievement tests. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results revealed a very strong and statistically significant positive correlation (r = .996, p < .01) between learning motivation and English competence. These findings suggest that maintaining high levels of student motivation through gamified learning strategies can significantly support academic success in language learning. This study contributes to the growing evidence that motivation is not only an emotional factor but a critical predictor of academic achievement.
