Abstract

The Traditional Adat Village of Takpala in Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is a cultural destination with significant potential to be developed as a community-based tourism (CBT) village. The authenticity of its traditional houses, preserved social structures, and rich cultural heritage make the village appealing to tourists. This study aims to examine the forms and processes of local community empowerment in tourism development in Takpala Village through the CBT approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants consist of traditional leaders, local tourism actors, village government officials, and representatives of the general community. The findings indicate that community involvement in tourism development is evident through tour guiding, cultural performances, and visitor management activities. However, challenges remain in areas such as human resource training, marketing, and the sustainability of tourism initiatives. This study recommends strengthening collaboration among stakeholders and enhancing local capacities to support inclusive, sustainable, and culturally grounded tourism development.

Abstract

Jamalsari Village has rich local potentials, including natural tourism, agriculture, and traditional culture. Unfortunately, these potentials have not been optimally managed, and as a result, they have not significantly contributed to the community’s welfare. In response to this issue, a community service program was conducted with the goal of empowering the residents in developing tourism and creative economies based on local potentials. The approach used was participatory, where the community was actively involved in every stage of the activity, from identifying potentials and problems to training, mentoring, and evaluating the outcomes. Key activities in this program included training local tour guides to enhance residents' capacity in welcoming tourists, homestay management training as a form of community-based accommodation, and training on processing local products such as cassava chips and opak (crispy rice cakes). In addition, the community was encouraged to utilize social media as a promotional tool for products and tourist destinations. The results of these activities showed an increase in the community’s capacity and awareness in managing the village’s potential. The establishment of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) became one of the success indicators, where this group actively managed tourism activities independently. Furthermore, several prototypes of creative economy products have been successfully produced and widely recognized through digital promotion. This program successfully encouraged active participation from the community in promoting and managing the village as a local wisdom-based tourist destination. The success of this initiative shows that community empowerment oriented towards local potential can be an effective and sustainable approach, with the potential to serve as a replicable model for other villages with similar characteristics. Additionally, with this program, the community began to have a better understanding of the importance of environmental sustainability and cultural preservation in tourism development. This program also opened new opportunities for improving the residents’ economy, creating jobs, and reducing dependence on less sustainable economic sectors.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the role of local skills in community empowerment in Kampung Pelangi Semarang, a tourist destination that has developed a community-based creative economy. The findings revealed that local skills such as handicrafts, painting, traditional performing arts, and culinary arts play a central role in economically empowering the community and promoting local cultural identity. Effective empowerment strategies included skills training, business assistance, and the formation of creative business groups that facilitated collaboration and product marketing. However, key challenges faced were limited access to capital, limited marketing reach, competition with mass products, and a lack of appreciation for the uniqueness of local skill products. To overcome these challenges, this study recommends strong synergy and collaboration among the community, government, academics, and the private sector. The government plays a role in providing access to capital, training, and business assistance. The private sector can be involved in expanding market opportunities. Academics can provide assistance and further studies. Additionally, local leadership and efforts to promote appreciation for local skills are crucial. To ensure sustainability, economic, social, and environmental aspects need to be considered in developing local skills. Product diversification, value addition, equal participation, and environmentally friendly production practices need to be adopted. The limitation of this study is its focus on a single case study in Kampung Pelangi Semarang, thus limiting the generalization of findings. Additionally, this study did not explore the environmental impact of creative economy and tourism activities in depth.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was designed to strengthen the capacity of residents in Cepoko Village, Gunungpati District, Semarang City, to manage agricultural resources as part of a village-based tourism initiative. The program employed a participatory mentoring approach, combining training in village tourism management with hands-on simulation of agricultural tourism practices. A total of 32 participants, including farmers, small business owners, and tourism village administrators, actively engaged in the activities. The outcomes revealed a notable enhancement in participants’ understanding of village tourism concepts, strategies for leveraging agricultural potential as tourist attractions, and digital marketing techniques to promote such offerings. The average knowledge score improved substantially, rising from 3.2 to 4.4 on a five-point scale. In addition, the community collaboratively developed an educational agricultural tourism package, reflecting their ability to apply newly acquired skills in practical planning. This activity illustrates that structured capacity-building programs, combining theoretical training with technical mentoring, can empower communities to manage local resources more independently, improve their tourism management capabilities, and support the long-term sustainability of village-based tourism initiatives.
