Abstract

This paper discusses the role of catalogue drawing as a framing device to aid design thinking in the architectural design process. Catalogue drawing has been largely understood as a representation of the finished and curated design output. However, it is argued that catalogue drawing enables designers to handle, arrange, and process information, assisting them to frame this information for different needs of design discovery. This paper analyses the catalogue drawings produced by first-year Bachelor of Architecture Programme students in Universitas Indonesia in doing their first creative making project. The study highlights four categories of catalogue drawings with various roles, from catalogue drawing intended to capture the relevant information, investigate the particularities, create a bigger picture of the design condition, and outline the design proposition. The study found that each catalogue drawings were often repeated in loops throughout the design process, enabling the students to incrementally generate original design works. This study underlines the role of catalogue drawing in revealing the progression of design thinking that is often hidden throughout the architectural design process.

Abstract

This paper investigates the notion of visibility and invisibility in architecture as a framework for exploring the existence of food in the domestic area. The paper argues that there is a disconnection between food, people, and the process behind it in everyday life. Such disconnection demonstrates the alternating visible and invisible existence of food process. Exploring both existences becomes essential to reveal the overall spatial story of food. The paper explores these two aspects through the food journey in the domestic space, creating a micro investigation of how food is obtained, prepared, cooked, and served. This paper aims to examine the possibilities of outlining the complex programming in everyday systems driven by the visibility and invisibility of food in domestic settings. Based on the findings of this study, the paper develops a form of programming titled (In)visible architecture, which constructs the co-existence between visible and invisible. Using exploration of tracing, mapping, and design mechanisms, such programming aims to reveal the complex visibility of everyday systems and, by doing so, broaden the relevance of knowledge of food-based architectural design.

Abstract

This paper argues that introducing algorithmic thinking to basic design pedagogy should give prominence to the basic logic and attitudes rather than learning the computational devices and tools. This paper examines the integration of computation or algorithmic thinking into a basic design studio in architectural education at Universitas Indonesia. The integration is conducted through a colour composing exercise that comprises four major stages: identifying patterns, rulemaking, colouring-composing, and reflection. The findings from this study demonstrate how the students are utilising algorithmic thinking as the primary reason to design their colour composition in different ways and complexity. Furthermore, the students can also point out some underlying concepts and creative strategies of design computing concerning colour composing. The findings of this study indicate the importance to promote students' understanding of computation that is not merely tools but more into design reasonings and skills.
