Abstract

This research was conducted due to a negative perception of elementary school teachers, mostly women, on Twitter as one of the social media platforms throughout the pandemic. From a media perspective, social media become important platforms for conveying confusion as well as providing solutions to parents. The research question is how netizen represents their struggle on social media, and whether there is a difference between men and women. The research used social semiotics as a method. The results are as follows. First, the conversation on female teachers' roles and responsibilities did not describe the existing social reality because the teachers’ voices were unheard in the tweets.  If did exist any, their voices were conveyed by someone else. Second, men spoke in an asymmetrical style of communication and considered the problems related to online learning to be systematic. While on the other hand women used symmetrical ones which ironically discriminate against or make a scapegoat of female teachers.

Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to show the misrepresentation of minority groups, specifically widowed women (hereinafter referred to as janda) in the era of convergence of media content (television as well as streaming and social media) in Indonesia. Media as the fourth pillar of democracy are supposed to inform and represent everything in a balanced and fair manner, instead of favoring the interests of the majority. The question we attempt to answer is: how the misrepresentation of janda on converged media content (FTVs) in a patriarchal society? Methods: This study applied feminist perspective in media convergence as well as the narrative analysis of Chatman.Findings: In general, the results of the study show that the convergence has not been in favor of janda, indicating that internet technology does not only strengthen the gender-biased values of media industry person in massively distributing FTVs (via streaming and social media) that threaten minorities, but also ignores the opposing feedback from netizens. As a result, the minority groups are increasingly muted. Reproduction of labelling of janda is a strategy of media owners to obtain maximum profits.Originality: We noted many studies on janda conducted from various scientific perspectives. However, studies that observe the depiction of janda in the media convergence in the perspective of communication studies are scarce. This study provides a discussion on the representation of janda in the vortex of capitalism in media convergence as the major novelty in this line of study.

Abstract

The development of locally-based communication theories in Indonesia in the context of globalization and the advancement of communication technology. Communication experts in Indonesia feel the need to develop communication concepts that are in line with the local context. This concept has been pioneered by several communication experts in Asian countries such as China, India, Korea, and Japan. The dominance of Western theories has sparked a desire to research and develop communication science concepts by emphasizing cultural uniqueness. This research outlines the cultural characteristic differences between the West and the East, especially in left (West) and right (East) thinking, as well as the use of time. An analysis is conducted on the stratified Javanese language concept, including the use of different language levels according to social stratification. In this context, the research also associates post-structuralist and post-colonial concepts to understand the dynamics of communication in Javanese society. The research concludes with a discussion of the influence of moral systems, social stratification, and power in the communication process using the Javanese language. It is concluded that communication in Javanese society is not only influenced by language levels but also by ethical and moral systems that regulate relationships between social classes. This research aims to provide new insights into the communication system in Javanese society and stimulate further research in the field of related communication sciences.

Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to describe the important role of organizational culture in strengthening the deontology ethics of local media journalists. Deontological ethics states that the will to do good must arise from within a person's individual. Organizational culture is one of the means used to instill, strengthen and internalize these values. Technological disruptions that have an impact on changes in media consumption, the closure of print media, the development of online media have changed the dynamics of journalistic practice in Indonesia. The important role of ethics comes to the fore in maintaining the quality of local media journalistic practices. Methods: This research was conducted with a phenomenological approach. The data were obtained from interviews with local media journalists in Central Java. Informants in this study are journalists who have worked for more than 20 years in local media, members of journalist organizations and actively provide journalistic ethics training. Findings: Ethics are still considered important by journalists. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen ethics considering that not all journalists have adequate knowledge and understanding of ethics. The culture of media organizations and professional organizations plays an important role in strengthening the deontology ethics of local media journalists. Originality: This research provides a novelty on how to strengthen the deontological ethics of local media journalists through strengthening organizational culture. This research provides it in terms of building journalist ethics as individuals and the media as a press company that sells news ideology.

Abstract

Background: The G30S/PKI incident that happened in 1965, was known with the murder of six generals by the PKI. The “New Orders” (Orba) regime, Soeharto, did extermination of hundreds of members and supporters of the PKI and imprisoning thousands of people, including Gerwani and those who were not members of PKI or Gerwani because of prejudices and assumptions. Since the reformation era of 1998, many historical facts about G30S/PKI were questioned by the people. During last 50 years the issues of G30S/PKI appeared and sank in the media coverage. Today, the representation of female politicians cannot be separated from the negative memories of the tragedy and the militant image of Gerwani. Methods: The research questions are: How consistent is media reporting when covering the same issue in different political contexts? How does the media, as a means of value socialization, influence the collective memory of society regarding women's activities in politics? The research is conducted using content analysis of a national newspaper from 1965 to 2015 to examine the visibility of Gerwani-related issues over time. Discourse analysis is also used to explore the role and position of Gerwani. Findings: The results indicate that the media tends to side with the dominant group, namely the rulers, and does not voice the interests of weaker groups. Women's interests are framed and represented through the perspective of men. Conclusion: In this context, female politicians receive more appreciation from society when they do not emphasize militant methods in advocating their ideas but instead focus on a caring approach. Novelty/Originality of this Study: The originality of this study lies in its focus on the evolving portrayal of Gerwani over different political eras and its examination of the media's role in shaping collective memory and gender biases. It uniquely integrates collective memory, and feminist perspectives to explore how media representation impacts societal views on women in politics.
