Abstract

The importance of exciting learning media cannot be ignored in education. This research aims to develop Android-based learning media to improve fourth-grade elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Besides, this also finds out the feasibility and effectiveness of the application. This learning media uses the ADDIE development model, which involves five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research results show that the application developed, called the LEVO App, can significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Trials were carried out at several stages, including one-on-one, small group, and field trials, with student response results. Apart from that, the results of the pre-test and post-test show a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after using this learning media. Validation by media experts and material experts also indicates that this application is very suitable for use as a learning media. Thus, it is hoped that developing Android-based learning media can be an effective and efficient solution for improving elementary school students’ English language skills. Keywords: ADDIE Model, LEVOApp, Vocabulary, Teaching Vocabulary

Abstract

This study focused on the development and evaluation of VocaSign, an interactive digital tool designed to help students with hearing disabilities master English vocabulary. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the ADDIE model, which consisted of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The study participants were seventh-grade students with hearing disabilities at SLB YKK Pacitan. Data were collected through interviews, observations, expert validation surveys, student feedback forms, and pre- and post-tests. The findings indicated that VocaSign had high feasibility based on expert evaluation, with an average content validity score of 91.2% and a media validity score of 95.6%, both of which were considered highly feasible. Students responded positively to the implementation of the program. In addition, the average pre-test score increased from 27.5 to 95.0 on the post-test, resulting in an N-gain score of 0.933, which indicated substantial effectiveness. Therefore, VocaSign served as a practical and effective tool for improving English vocabulary proficiency among students with hearing disabilities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe English language teaching practices in elementary schools in Pacitan Regency, the challenges faced by teachers, and the methods applied in teaching and learning activities. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The research subjects consisted of four fifth-grade English teachers from four elementary schools selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using Creswell’s interactive analysis model. The findings of this study indicate that English language teaching practices across the schools share similarities and differences in the selection of materials, media used, strategies, and implementation methods, all of which are tailored to the students’ characteristics and the school environment. Teachers still face challenges related to their own competencies, students’ English proficiency, classroom management, and limited educational facilities. To overcome these obstacles, teachers employ various strategies, particularly Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Inquiry-Based Learning, and Total Physical Response (TPR), which are integrated with a variety of learning activities. This study confirms that success in teaching English is influenced by teachers’ ability to adapt teaching strategies to students’ needs and school conditions.
