Abstract

Aceh is one of the biggest coffee producers in Indonesia’s province. The coffee farmers separate the coffee beans with the flesh of the fruit for processing the seeds, while the coffee fruit is considered as waste used as animal feed. Based on existing research, the coffee flesh produced contains polyphenol compounds as antibacterial. A very promising sea product from Aceh is seaweed. Brown seaweed (Sargassum sp.) is very common in the west coast of Aceh province. One of the derivatives is alginate. In this study, a combination of polyphenols extracts from coffee flesh and alginates from seaweed Sargassum sp. used as a basic ingredient in making face masks. Tests on organoleptic observations, pH testing, testing time of dried preparations, and testing of bacterial activity have been carried out in this study. In addition, variations in the mixture preparation based on the particle size of alginate powder have also been carried out in this study. The results obtained indicate that the yield produced from coffee fruit extracts is 5.86%, the highest yield of alginate is by potassium carbonate of 40.77%, the acidity of the combination is 4.5 - 6.5. For preparations, drying time has an average estimated time of approximately 6 minutes. Bacterial activity test showed that K2CO3 extracting agent concentration of 2% was strong against bacterial growth with a clean area of 14 mm. With these results, it can be seen the combination is able to inhibit the rate of bacterial growth, so it is recommended for alternative ingredients in the manufacture of cosmetics pharmaceutical industry masks.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the rate of heat absorption in black, red, green, yellow, milky white, and blue electrical light related to temperature change with a predetermined time variation. This study uses an AC power circuit to light a bulb with varied colours and then measures the temperature associated with the heat involved in the light on. The calculation in this study uses the Black principle concept. The results showed that black and green light bulbs had the greatest temperature change followed by red, blue, yellow, and white bulbs. This is in accordance with the basic concept that dark colours tend to conduct heat better than bright colours.

Abstract

A beginning investigation about the presence of secondary metabolite compounds in the methanol extract of red grandiflora flower (Sesbania grandiflora L. Pers) has been conducted. The flower which traditionally used as antihyperglycemic therapy has been extracted through methanolic-maceration. The crude extract was phytochemically analyzed by qualitative approach with specific reagent for the each type of the compound. The analysis of functional group prediction is also performed by using FTIR spectrometer. Phytochemical test showed that it contains alkaloid, tannin, polyphenol, flavonoid, quinone, and triterpenoid. The IR spectrum showed that the typical functional group of the secondary metabolite consist of hydroxide (–OH), olefin (C=C), and aromatic which as constituents of phenolic group

Abstract

An analysis for determining kinetics of effect of varied shelf-life time to the level of vitamin C in Malus sylvestris fruits has been conducted. It has used fresh apple Malang (M. sylvestris) from Batu (East Java) at their harvest time with the same size and color as the subject of the research. Therefore, the fruits were stored in room temperature and kept away from direct sunlight for 0, 1, 2, and 3 days. The fruits were extracted by using a juice blending technique with aquadest as the solvent. An iodimetric titration has been used to determine the effect of the varied storage time to the level of vitamin C in the samples. The result shows that the average value of vitamin C level in M. sylvestris stored in 0, 1, 2, and 3 days as much as 2.3904 mg/50g; 2.1073 mg/50g; 2.06695 mg/50g; and 1.9860 mg/50g, respectively. Statistic analysis of ANAVA-A and t-test confirms that there are significant differences between the level of vitamin C of M. sylvestris stored in 0, 1, 2, and 3 days. The conclusion about the kinetics of ascorbic acid degradation of M. sylvestris at 27 0C states three expressions as following as: the reaction is a second order reaction, the constants of reaction rate is 2.65 x 10-2 L(mol.days)-1, the half life is 15.786 days, and kinetics model for the reaction is C = (0.0265t + 1/C0)-1.

Abstract

This is a developing research of learning media which aimed to create media of audio visual for the practicum of colloid and to get quality score of the media. The creating of the media has been consulted by two experts of media and three peer reviewers. The research instrument is questionnaire that contains aspects and criteria of quality scoring. The scoring had been given by five chemistry teachers at excellent senior high school. The result of the research is a audio visual media which burnt on CD. It contains practicum about making of colloid by disperse method and condentation method. Based on the scoring from reviewer 1, the media is classified to good quality with the mean score is 138.5. The media is classified to very good quality by scoring from reviewer 2. By testing in classroom, colloid learning by using audio visual media gives more satisfy result than learning without the media.

Abstract

Sargassum is known to have potential ingredients, such as essential nutrients and minerals, which are important for agroindustry and the environment. This study aims to determine the proximate properties of Sargassum polycystum C.A. Agardh from Lange beach and the optimum extraction period arising the liquid product. The dried seaweed was extracted using 0.1% KOH at a constant temperature of 80°C for 120–600 mins. Furthermore, nutrients content, pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) of the afforded filtrate were quantified. As a result, the moisture, ash, fibre, carbohydrate, protein, and fat content were 7.16, 13.057, 20.33, 51.77, 6.12, and 1.57%, respectively. The value of pH, EC, and TDS ranged around 4.69–7.27, 0.013–0.078 dS.m-1, and 6.24–39.75 mg.L-1, respectively. The level of N, P, K, and organic C, were estimated around 0.30–0.81, 0.16–0.28, 0.15–0.20, and 0.32–0.80%, respectively. Meanwhile, the content of Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn, and Zn were observed from 112.04–212.61, 24.60–33.57, 146.59–280.92, 416.22–630.69, 18.25–27.73, and 19.86–26.53 ppm, respectively. In conclusion, extraction for 120 mins seems to be preferable, as the observed parameters were above the minimum range.
