Abstract

Lately, the mining issue in Indonesia has become controversial due to the regulation of the President of Indonesia Number 76 of 2004. The studies focusing on the issue of mining and its connection with the Qur`an have not existed at all. So far, articles on mining issues have been merely descriptive, not applicative. Hence, this article aims to contextualize the Qur`an with mining operations in Indonesia. This article is qualitative research and utilizes al-tafsīr al-maqāṣidī as the approach. By examining the maqāṣid of the Qur`anic verse, this article reveals that managing the earth to obtain its benefits is allowed as it is a natural thing given by God while maintaining the sustainability of the environment as well as complying with sharia. In addition, government’s regulations have been compatible with the maqāṣid as well.

Abstract

The increasing religious intolerance in Indonesia in recent years has prompted various responses from religious authorities, including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). One of NU's efforts to address this phenomenon is through fatwas issued by the Forum Bahtsul Masail Kyai Muda Anshor (2017) and Bahtsul Masail Maudhu’iyah at the National Conference (Munas) of NU (2019), which emphasize the principle of religious tolerance, particularly concerning non-Muslim leadership and the status of non-Muslims in Muslim-majority societies. This study focuses on analyzing these two fatwas using a qualitative method through discourse analysis and interviews with key figures involved in their formulation. The findings indicate that NU fatwas not only serve as Islamic legal guidelines but also function as instruments of social reconciliation in plural societies. These fatwas offer a more inclusive and contextualized Islamic perspective, reaffirm NU’s commitment to national principles, and demonstrate that religious authority plays a crucial role in shaping tolerance discourse amid Indonesia’s socio-political dynamics. Furthermore, this study reveals that the production and reception of fatwas are influenced by social and political factors, underscoring the importance of understanding how fatwas are utilized in shaping public opinion.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of QS. al-Nisa`: 43 which discusses tayammum. The significance of this research is that in understanding QS. al-Nisa`: 43, there are many differences of opinion among scholars about the meaning and procedure of tayammum. Therefore, this article is presented by using qualitative methods and muqāran interpretation as an approach. Tayammum hadith facts and their context will also be presented to understand the QS. al-Nisa`: 43 comprehensively. This study shows that there are at least four points of difference among scholars regarding the interpretation of the words mardhā, safar, Falam Tajidū Māan, and ṣa‘īd. Such differences are caused by some scholars who do not consider the hadiths of tayammum comprehensively.

Abstract

Abstract

Due to the limited studies on the minorities’ perceptions of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, this study examines how Shia, as a minority group in Indonesia, perceive this issue. It analyzes the construction of discourse in several news articles related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, published in October 2024 on Shia’s website, ahlulbaitindonesia.or.id. This study is a digital or virtual ethnography that uses a qualitative approach and employs Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis theory, which requires the exploration of three dimensions: text, social cognition, and context. This study examines relevant news content retrieved using three keywords: ‘Zionis’, ‘Israel’, and ‘Palestina’, and uncovers the motivations underlying the production of discourse through an interview. This study finds that the news discourses are reported in a non-objective manner. The author has a negative tendency towards Israel by emphasizing words with the meaning of violence, disrespect, or terror. Meanwhile, Palestine was portrayed as an oppressed and honorable party. Social cognition analysis reveals that ideological and emotional factors drive the negative tendency. There is also an attempt to associate with the Shia global hub, surpassing the objective of maintaining local existence. From a contextual perspective, the massive production of negative news is a reaction to the death of three resistance figures against Israel and a response to global silence on this conflict. Ultimately, this article evaluates, amends, and refines Schäfer’s study, which merely contends that Shia entered the virtual world and utilized digital media to build a good image, whereas the phenomenon is, in fact, more complex.
