Abstract

This research was aimed at profiling student?s thinking skills in dealing with Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions based on Marzano taxonomy by referring to 13 indicators. This pre-experimental research employed pretest-posttest design. The indicators included were comparison, classification, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, error analysis, construction, analysis perspective, abstraction, decision making, investigation, problem solving, inquiry experiment, and innovation finding. The instrument used was a 13-essay question (r-Pearson= 0.79 and Cronbach alpha = 0.68). The data gained from 98 students of Natural Science Education was then analyzed using paired t-test. The results showed the significant different between pre-test and posttest (sig. <0.01). As many as four HOTS indicators (i.e. deductive reasoning, error analysis, construction, and abstraction) were categorized as low level. Meanwhile, the eighth HOTS indicators were categorized as moderate level, namely: comparison, inductive reasoning, analysis perspective, decision making, investigation, solving problem, inquiry experiment, and innovative finding. In addition, the classification indicator was considered in high level in the end of the course. It can be concluded that, in general, students? HOTS are still in moderate level. Thus, the proper strategies should be designed to improve this condition into the optimal level.

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is a comprehensive transformation of all aspects of production in industry through the combination of digital and internet technology with conventional industries. The education sector is an important field that must adapt to the demands of the times so as not to be left behind. In the world of education, especially in subjects such as Basic Biology, there are many objects that are difficult to visualize in real terms, one of which is the topic of the Structure and Function of Plant Networks. The problem can be visualized using Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The purpose of developing AR-based teaching materials is to combine biology material by applying AR technology so that learning is more interesting, meaningful, and interactive, and students can observe objects in biological studies. The product specifications developed were in the form of Basic Biology I teaching materials consisting of the BIOAR application and augmented reality-based supplement books on the topic of Plant Tissue Structure and Function. This method of developing teaching materials used R & D (Research and Development) which consisted of (1) Research and Information collection, (2) Planning, (3) Development of teaching materials based on augmented reality, (4) Validation of teaching materials by experts. The validation results showed that this augmented reality-based teaching material was declared very valid with a value of 4.52.

Abstract

The roots of sawo kecik (Manilkara kauki (L.) Dubard) contain astringent that can be used to treat diarrhea for infants. However, the active antibacterial substance in sawo kecik roots has not been known. Therefore, the research to understand the antimicrobial activity of sawo kecik roots extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was performed. Sawo kecik roots were macerated using methanol and chloroform. The result was then treated with E.coli and S.aureus with a concentration of 5 ppm and compared to negative control (solvent) and further observed and analyzed how reduced the bacterial growth with Two Ways ANOVA without interaction. The research results indicated that the sawo kecik roots methanol extract was effective to slow down the growth of S.aureus (0.160 ± 0.007) but ineffective against E.coli, whereas sawo kecik roots chloroform extract was not effective to reduce both bacteria. It can be concluded that further research is required to measure and verify the antibacterial activity of the extract using higher concentration samples and different research methodology.
