Abstract

ABSTRACTThis review aims at compiling and summarizing findings of published studies that assessed factors associated with compliance of women to take recommended iron tablets during pregnancy. The review is done in 10 published studies (8 are 2002—2010 publications and 2 are 1993—1994 publications) indexed in Pubmed with the above objective. Low utilization of antenatal care/ANC services is found to be associated with low compliance as it prevents the women to receive recommended number of the iron tablets as well as decrease the opportunity of women to have encouragement from health staff to take the tablets. Supply of tablets becomes the issue since not all women receiving 30 tablets/ANC visits as recommended. Studies on influence of side-effects of taking the tablets to compliance show inconclusive findings. Some studies found the effect is very minimal, and can be managed appropriately especially among more educated women and among women with adequate counseling. Studies also indicated that support from family is important to reduce possibility of pregnant women forgot to take the tablets, the other major factor of the low compliance. Quality of counseling, e.g. clarity of the messages, is associated with compliance. In conclusion, improving support from ANC provider (such as sufficient tablet supply, clear message on the tablets benefits) and support from family may contribute to better compliance of women towards maternal iron supplementation.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to assess child feeding knowledge and practice in transitional period (6-8 months), mother’s information exposure and the functioning of the health system in delivering complementary feeding programs. A cross sectional study was done to 175 children aged 6-8 months at 12 villages in Jonggat Sub-district, Lombok. Structured interview to the mothers, 24 hour recalls, and in-depth interview to the cadres of Integrated Health Posts were used throughout the study. Most mothers had poor knowledge and practice on child feeding (68.0% and 75.4%, respectively). Almost all children had received complementary food (98.9%), but only less than a half children were introduced to complementary food at the appropriate age i.e. 6 months (45.7%). Only few children had good dietary diversity i.e. ≥ 4 food type in the previous day (6.9%). More than half of the mothers (52%) were exposed to information related to child feeding practice. The sources of information mostly were from health officers, cadres, mother and child health book and printed media (e.g. newspaper and magazine). The local health staff and cadres had basic knowledge on child feeding programs but the practice was not adequate. Mother’s knowledge and practice on child feeding within the transitional period in Jonggat sub-district was poor. The health system was not functioning well in delivering complementary feeding programs. Abstract

Introduction: Inadequate energy intake was prevalent among women of reproductive age, which may contribute to poor diet. Having great concern towards health and nutrition may play a role in shaping eating habit and food-related behavior to achieve a healthy diet. This study aims to examine the association between health concern and energy intake, while considering other factors such as cooking frequency and having food away from home. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in an urban slum area in Jakarta, involving 233 mothers of young children through consecutive sampling. Data was collected through interview using structured questionnaire, including 2x24-hour dietary recall. All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version 20.Results: Energy intake of most subjects did not meet the recommendation. There was no significant correlation between health concern measured by General Health Interest Scale and energy intake. The frequency of having take-out food was a significant predictor of the energy intake. Additionally, a significant negative correlation between health concern and having take-out food was found. Conclusion: Having take-out food was associated with energy intake. Provision of health and nutrition information in the food stores might help to increase health concern to shape a healthier diet. Thus, a collaborative effort targeting both food sellers and customers is essential.

Abstract

Background: Children generally facing food avoidance or food refusal behaviour and it may affect their food consumption. But there is limited information on food avoidance behaviour among Indonesian children. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether energy intake and body weight are influenced by food avoidance behaviour in children aged 2-6 years in North Jakarta. Methods: Participants (N=168) were recruited between February – March 2020. Data collection was obtained via interviews with the mother or caregiver of the children. Food avoidance behaviour consisting of satiety responsiveness, slowness in eating, emotional under-eating, and food fussiness was measured with the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. The child’s weight and dietary intake were assessed using a digital weighing scale and 2 x 24 hours food recall. Spearman test was performed to analyse the correlation between these variables. Multivariate analysis was done using linear regression to determine predictors of a child’s body weight and energy intake. Results: Energy intake among children was below the recommendation, and it was significantly correlated with the child’s body weight. Satiety responsiveness was negatively correlated with the child’s body weight (r = -0.166; p-value < 0.05) and energy intake (r = -0.210; p-value < 0.05). After running a linear regression test, we found that satiety responsiveness along with family income and child’s age was a significant predictor of energy intake among children. Conclusions: Children who are more responsive to satiety had lower body weight and energy intake. Understanding the child’s food avoidance behaviour is useful for designing intervention programs related to optimizing intake in children and malnutrition.

Abstract

Despite the fact that Indonesia has established nutrition and health measures to prevent childhood malnutrition, more than 70% of children aged 2 to 5 consume less iron than the Indonesian dietary recommendations. Iron deficiency harms children's cognitive and motor development, increase morbidity. Ascorbic acid prevents stomach iron accumulation, inhibiting nonheme absorption. Iron-deficient kids don't eat enough. 65 to 72% of children's daily calories are consumed at home, hence the environment is crucial. The purpose of this study is to see if the iron and vitamin C consumption of children aged 2 to 6 in Pejagalan, North Jakarta, is related to their eating environment. There were 191 samples examined. To assess children's intake, 2x24h food recalls were performed. A modified version of the NHANES CBQ was used to assess the home food environment. For each response, 1 signified "never" and 4 meant "always." SPSS Version 20 was used to perform Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression. The iron and vitamin consumption of the subjects was lower than the estimated average requierement (EAR) for Indonesia. It was shown that people who had more access to fruits and vegetables ingested more iron and vitamin C. Iron consumption was enhanced by fruits, vegetables, sweets, and SSB. Fruit accessibility (p<0.05) and availability (p<0.05) were related to vitamin C consumption. There are a variety of home food environment characteristics linked with the availability and accessibility of food that are related to a child's consumption, particularly of micronutrients

Abstract

Backgrounds: Adults in Indonesia have challenges due to the high prevalence of obesity. Factors that contributed to obesity included unhealthy eating practices. Skipping breakfast habits are linked to health issues such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Breakfast practices also reflected the social and cultural dynamics in urban and rural. Socioeconomic and demographic factors could cause differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Objectives: This research aimed to examine the differences in breakfast practices among Indonesian adults in urban and rural areas based on various characteristics and to explore the association between socioeconomic and demographic characteristics with breakfast practices. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the Indonesia Food Barometer (IFB) in 2018. A total of 770 adults (26–45 years old) were examined to observe the differences in breakfast practices (skipping breakfast, eating together, buying food, cooking food, and activities during meals) in urban and rural areas. Logistic regression analysis was also employed to examine the association between skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices with socioeconomic and demographic variables. Results: Chi-square analysis showed significant differences between urban and rural areas in eating alone, eating outside the home, and buying food during breakfast (p-value <0.001). Factors related to skipping breakfast were education level and type of residence (all p-value <0.001), while occupation (p-value = 0.004) and type of residence (p-value <0.001) were related to modern breakfast practices. Conclusions: There were differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural. Skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices were more prevalent in urban areas.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the families' support regarding maternal health and child care toward mothers who demonstrated Good Compliance (GC) and Poor Compliance (PC) with nutrition interventions during the first 1,000 days of their child's life. The study employed an in-depth interview method to gather data from 20 fathers and 7 grandparents residing in Bogor City. The data were analyzed using a constant comparison approach between the GC and PC groups for each theme. The findings indicated that family members provided more specific support for child feeding than for maternal Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS), given that the mothers encountered more difficulties on child feeding. Encouraging the mothers to continue taking IFA supplement despite their hesitance was predominantly reported by fathers in the GC fathers. Regarding child feeding, in addition to encouraging the child to eat and feeding them, the GC fathers often engaged in discussions with their wives. In contrast, the PC fathers rarely engaged in such discussions and were only consulted when their wives reported problem. Furthermore, fathers considered their wives to be more knowledgeable on these issues as fathers had limited time due to work commitment. Grandmothers primarily offered advice on child feeding based on their own experiences, sometimes providing less suitable advice for PC mothers. While fathers in both groups did not proactively seek information about maternal health and child care, the GC fathers were more likely to be encountered such information through discussions initiated by their wives, prompting them to pursue further reading. The interaction of fathers in both groups with health professionals only occurred during antenatal visits, with minimal communication. It is recommended that strategies be developed to engage family more highlight their crucial role in fostering a supportive environment for mothers. It is aslo advised that antenal visits be optimized and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH)handbook be utilized to raise awareness and enhance paternal involvement.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a blended training for school teachers on adolescent health and nutrition. The training objective was to improve teachers’ knowledge, as well as their capacity to develop and implement action plans on school-based health and nutrition programs. Adolescents continue to face nutrition problems closely linked with poor eating behaviours and lack of physical activity. School has been identified as an effective venue for improving these problems. Many teachers’ training programs were reported on increasing the teachers’ roles in school health and nutrition program, but studies utilizing a blended training is lacking. This study used pre-post intervention with mixed methods design. The participants of this blended training were secondary school teachers who enrolled in a five-phase Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) training on school-based nutrition promotion program, comprising in-service learning and on-the-job training for ten months. The participants decreased throughout the training to 114 participants completed the whole training. Out of 114 participants, 25 (22%) passed this NGTS blended training. Participants’ knowledge on health and nutrition improved as shown in pre-test median score of 60 and post-test median score of 80 (p<0.001). The final assignment on developing action plans showed a relatively good quality of engagement based on the participants’ understanding on the NGTS program, their resources, and their ability to manage challenges. Blended training with long duration but accompanied with technical assistance can provide added value in understanding the process of the NGTS program implementation and school-based health and nutrition program in general. However, the high attrition rate should be improved by facilitating more varied and engaging activities as part of the technical assistance in the future training program.
