Abstract

Modernization leads to nutrition transition process, shifts eating behavior into a more modernized pattern that may increase the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Using the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB) data, this study assessed the differences in eating behavior between metropolization levels among Indonesian adults. 1482 adults aged 18-64 in six provinces were involved. Eating behavior was defined by the number of eating events, food preparation, eating location, eating companion, and activity while eating. Metropolization level was defined based on the gross domestic regional product (GRDP), GRDP/capita, population size, population density, and non-agricultural worker proportion. Differences in each eating behavior dimension between metropolization levels were analyzed using the Chi-square test (p<0.05) and adjusted with sociodemographic factors using logistics regression. 83.9% of the subjects had ≤5 eating events/day and dominated by 4-5 eating events/day. 51.2% and 83.1% of the subjects cooked and ate at home frequently, indicating the practice of traditional eating. Meanwhile, the tendency towards modern dimension can be seen as the proportion of eating alone frequently and eating only less frequently were 60.3% and 67.9%, respectively. Eating behavior differed significantly (p<0.05) between metropolization levels, except for eating with company. Proportion of not cooking and eating away from home frequently increase as metropolization level increases (p<0.05) after adjusted with sociodemographic factors while eating alone and eating only showed no significant differences. Modern eating behavior tendency increases along with metropolization level. Improving living and working conditions in metropolitan areas is imperative to facilitate healthier eating behavior among the inhabitants.

Abstract

Backgrounds: Adults in Indonesia have challenges due to the high prevalence of obesity. Factors that contributed to obesity included unhealthy eating practices. Skipping breakfast habits are linked to health issues such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Breakfast practices also reflected the social and cultural dynamics in urban and rural. Socioeconomic and demographic factors could cause differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Objectives: This research aimed to examine the differences in breakfast practices among Indonesian adults in urban and rural areas based on various characteristics and to explore the association between socioeconomic and demographic characteristics with breakfast practices. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the Indonesia Food Barometer (IFB) in 2018. A total of 770 adults (26–45 years old) were examined to observe the differences in breakfast practices (skipping breakfast, eating together, buying food, cooking food, and activities during meals) in urban and rural areas. Logistic regression analysis was also employed to examine the association between skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices with socioeconomic and demographic variables. Results: Chi-square analysis showed significant differences between urban and rural areas in eating alone, eating outside the home, and buying food during breakfast (p-value <0.001). Factors related to skipping breakfast were education level and type of residence (all p-value <0.001), while occupation (p-value = 0.004) and type of residence (p-value <0.001) were related to modern breakfast practices. Conclusions: There were differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural. Skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices were more prevalent in urban areas.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the families' support regarding maternal health and child care toward mothers who demonstrated Good Compliance (GC) and Poor Compliance (PC) with nutrition interventions during the first 1,000 days of their child's life. The study employed an in-depth interview method to gather data from 20 fathers and 7 grandparents residing in Bogor City. The data were analyzed using a constant comparison approach between the GC and PC groups for each theme. The findings indicated that family members provided more specific support for child feeding than for maternal Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS), given that the mothers encountered more difficulties on child feeding. Encouraging the mothers to continue taking IFA supplement despite their hesitance was predominantly reported by fathers in the GC fathers. Regarding child feeding, in addition to encouraging the child to eat and feeding them, the GC fathers often engaged in discussions with their wives. In contrast, the PC fathers rarely engaged in such discussions and were only consulted when their wives reported problem. Furthermore, fathers considered their wives to be more knowledgeable on these issues as fathers had limited time due to work commitment. Grandmothers primarily offered advice on child feeding based on their own experiences, sometimes providing less suitable advice for PC mothers. While fathers in both groups did not proactively seek information about maternal health and child care, the GC fathers were more likely to be encountered such information through discussions initiated by their wives, prompting them to pursue further reading. The interaction of fathers in both groups with health professionals only occurred during antenatal visits, with minimal communication. It is recommended that strategies be developed to engage family more highlight their crucial role in fostering a supportive environment for mothers. It is aslo advised that antenal visits be optimized and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH)handbook be utilized to raise awareness and enhance paternal involvement.

Abstract

Prevalensi penyakit sendi termasuk asam urat di indonesia yaitu 7,3% sedangkan di Kabupaten Bogor sebesar 9,28%. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis hubungan asupan protein, vitamin C dan indeks masa tubuh dengan kejadian asam urat pada dewasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain cross sectional yang dilakukan di Desa Padurenan Gunung Sindur pada Juli 2023. Responden yang terlibat sebanyak 67 orang. Pengambilan sampel dengan cara purposive sampling. Penelitian dilakukan dengan melakukan penimbangan berat badan dan pengukuran tinggi badan, wawancara recall konsumsi pangan 2 × 24 jam dan pemeriksaan kadar asam urat dengan easy touch GCU. Analisis yang dilakukan adalah analisis univariat dan bivarian menggunakan uji korelasi. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan sebanyak 14 laki laki dewasa (21%) kadar asam urat tinggi dan 30 perempuan dewasa (45%) kadar asam urat tinggi dan tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara asupan protein (p= 0,689) asupan vitamin C (p= 0,838) dan indeks masa tubuh (p= 0,124) dengan kejadian asam urat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disarankan masyarakat mengkonsumsi lebih beragam protein dan mengkonsumsi buah-buahan yang kaya akan vitamin.

Adequate nutrition is critical for the growth, academic, and physical performance of adolescents. In semi-military schools, the regimented weekly schedules may influence students' eating patterns, potentially causing variations in diet quality between weekdays and weekends. This study aims to explore the differences in diet quality between weekdays and weekends among high school students enrolled in a semi-military education system.

Abstract

Mothers introducing solid foods (other than breast milk) to their babies (aged 6 to 23 months) rely heavily on nutrition labels when selecting infant cereals. Therefore, it is crucial to identify maternal knowledge regarding iron and the factors influencing their intentions to purchase iron-enriched cereals using the theory of planned behavior. This information will assist in formulating maternal purchasing decisions for high-iron infant cereals. As the questionnaire has not been validated yet, it needs to be validated. Aim to validate the questionnaire to evaluate mothers' intention to buy iron-fortified cereal for children aged 6-23 months using the theory of planned behavior and iron-related knowledge questionnaires.

Abstract

Obesity has emerged as one of the global public health challenges. Obesity rates among adults in Indonesia have doubled over the past two decades, including among workers. Obesity among workers can lead to lower productivity and early retirement. Occupational factors have been associated with the prevalence of obesity at the workplace. However, the relationship between occupation type and obesity in Indonesia has not been clarified. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between occupation type and obesity among Indonesian workers using data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB).

Abstract

Background: Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, negatively impacting children's cognitive and physical development. Mothers' knowledge of iron and the benefits of fortified complementary foods may have influenced their purchase intentions and decisions. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between mothers' purchase intentions, actual purchases of iron-fortified infant cereals, and iron intake in children aged 6–23 months in Tangerang, Indonesia. Research on this topic remained limited, emphasizing the need for further studies to strengthen the existing evidence. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 162 mothers in pairs with their children aged 6–23 months, recruited consecutively. Data were collected using validated questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test to compare groups and Spearman's correlation test to assess the strength of relationships between variables. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mothers showed positive attitudes and intentions towards purchasing iron-fortified cereals, with a notable 51.9% having made recent purchases. While these purchase intentions correlate with actual purchases, they did not directly influence children's iron intake. Instead, factors such as mother’s education, occupation, and household income played significant roles in determining iron intake levels. Conclusion: Purchase intentions were associated with actual purchase intention; however, factors such as gender, mother’s education, occupation, and household income did not exhibit a direct relationship with children's iron intake. This study indicates that while mother’s purchase intentions are associated with actual purchases, they do not directly impact children's iron intake.

Abstract

The 2014 Total Diet Study reported that the dietary patterns among Indonesians remain inconsistent with the 2014 Balanced Nutrition Guidelines. Employment status is known to influence social eating behaviors, and social eating during lunch may affect diet quality. This study aims to determine the relationship between employment status and social eating with diet quality among the productive-age population in Indonesia as measured by the Balanced Nutrition Index. This study employed a cross-sectional approach using secondary data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer, with a sample of 271 respondents (135 men and 136 women) who met the inclusion criteria. The variables analyzed in this study were respondent characteristics, employment status, and social eating. Chi-squared test revealed that employment status and social eating had no significant relationship with diet quality. However, socioeconomic status had a relationship with diet quality (p = 0.026). Multivariate analysis further revealed that socioeconomic status was a dominant factor in diet quality among the productive-age population in Indonesia. Individuals with low socioeconomic status faced a 2.5-times higher risk of poor diet quality compared to those with high socioeconomic status.

Abstract

Background: Mothers’ compliance with national nutrition programs during the first 1000 days of life is crucial to optimal child growth and development. However, national surveys have revealed low levels of compliance, suggesting challenges faced by mothers. Thus, understanding the facilitating factors of mother’s consistent good compliance is important. Objectives: To explore the facilitating factors of mothers’ good compliance with four national nutrition programs during the first 1000 days of life. Methos: Of the 48 mothers of 6-23-month-old children interviewed in this study, 10 demonstrated consistent compliance with the recommended maternal iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and vitamin A capsule (VAC) supplementation programs. In-depth exploration and analysis were carried out on the 10 mothers, focusing on the roles of health staff, information exposure, knowledge, and family support. Results: All mothers had a strong initiative to seek information from various sources, including healthcare staff, the mother and child health book, and Internet (among urban mothers), irrespective of their socio-demographic backgrounds. Frequent information exposure resulted in good knowledge, except on VAC supplementation. Healthcare staff, particularly midwives, played significant roles in mothers’ compliance to IFA supplementation and breastfeeding, but much less for complementary feeding practices. The role of Posyandu cadres was limited to the dissemination of VAC supplementation schedules. Support from family members were observed in all programs, mainly in providing information and maintaining motivation. Conclusions: Information exposure and family support were key to mothers’ good compliance. The roles of healthcare staff, particularly in providing complementary feeding information, should be strengthened.
