Abstract

The objectives of this paper are i) to explore factors influencing practices of timely breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding with special attention on factors related to the roles of father; and ii) to elaborate possible factors influencing father’s roles in breastfeeding based on literatures from the developed world. Studies conclude that father’s roles in supporting breastfeeding include participation in decision on infant feeding mode, involvement in child care taking and household tasks, as well as being the protector and the family provider. They also explore that the quality of couple relationship, parental knowledge and attitudes, characteristics of parental function, and the burden on the family economy are barriers which discourage fathers from being supportive towards breastfeeding. Indonesian fathers may influence breastfeeding in the same way and also experience similar barriers. However, due to different exposure to norms, beliefs, and cultures, a specific study on this matter is very relevant to be carried out in Indonesia prior to any breastfeeding promotion targeted to fathers.

Abstract

Background: Data from Riskesdas in 2010 showed that family living in the urban area still had lower rate of exclusive breastfeeding, specifically 25.2% compare to those living in the rural area. In Jakarta, the proportion of children aged 0-23 months that still being breastfed was only 70.3%, this rate was below the national level of children age 0-23 months that still being breastfed which reach 80.1%. This study aimed to explore the experiences of mothers attending online Mother Support Group as their breastfeeding support. Methods: Qualitative approach was used to explore mothers? breastfeeding performance and mothers? experience attending the online group. Key findings show the mothers in the group exposure received support and knowledge from other mother or peers. Type of support given to the mother by both peers and experts (professionals) can be in the form of support group and given in online form. Results: There were also mothers experienced overwhelmed with the information that circulate. This kind of mothers considered that they better learning with individual setting to be more focus or conduct only virtual meeting Conclusion: Good performance on breastfeeding among mothers? can be maintained by their experiences of group that allow mothers learn in conducive environment and/or solved mothers? breastfeeding problem.

Abstract

Abstract We explored paternal roles in timely breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding practices in Jakarta using a mixed-methods approach in sequence of focus group discussions (FGDs – phase 1) and a quantitative survey (phase 2). The study population was parents with infants aged below 6 months. Data on paternal roles, maternal attributes, and breastfeeding practices were collected from 43 purposively selected parents in phase 1 and 536 couples in phase 2. FGDs provided insights to finalize the questionnaire for the survey. Nine paternal roles were identified: 1-accompanying the mother during antenatal and postnatal visits, 2-suggesting places for health checkups and delivery, 3-seeking information about child nutrition, 4-accompanying the mother during delivery, 5-facilitating psychological support of the mother, 6-childcare involvement, 7-engagement in childcare discussions, 8-involvement in decisions about infant feeding mode, and 9-enthusiasm for fatherhood. Roles 3 (aOR=1.65; 95%CI=1.07 to 2.54) and 9 (1.59; 1.04-2.44) were positively associated with timely initiation of breastfeeding. Role 8 was positively associated with exclusive breastfeeding (1.69; 1.10-2.60), but roles 2 (0.49; 0.32-0.76) and 5 (0.97; 0.41-0.64) were negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding. Fathers played roles in breastfeeding practices under study. Fathers need a tailored breastfeeding promotion to stimulate necessary support for breastfeeding mothers. Abstract

Nutrition education among adolescents is lacking in Indonesian schools. Whereas adolescent girls, in particular, need adequate nutrients to prepare them for their future pregnancy which may improve their nutrition status in the long term. Therefore, this study aims to assess the impact of a teacher-led nutrition education program on the nutrition and anemia status of adolescent girls. A quasi-experimental design was applied in junior high and high schools in Bogor which compared the findings between the intervention (n=112) and the control group (n=129). Teachers in the intervention group received training on health and nutrition for adolescents and were asked to deliver nutrition education for their students for 14 weeks. The control group did not receive any exposure to the topics. The weight, height, and hemoglobin level were measured before and after the program. Paired and independent t-test statistical analysis was used to assess the impact of the intervention for continuous variables and the Chi-Square test was used for categorical data. After the program, although there were no significant improvements in BMI-for-age z-score, however, significant improvements were observed for hemoglobin level among the treatment group. This was consequently shown in the anemia status, where the prevalence of anemia was significantly lower compared to the control group (p<0.001). The findings demonstrate that teacher-led nutrition education can improve the anemia status of adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic caused the government to implement social movement restrictions affecting the household economy and school closure that will lead to change in the home food environment, parental feeding practices, and the end will influence child’s eating behavior. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the parental feeding practices among young school-aged children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Eighteen informants consisting of mothers and a grandmother have participated in the online in-depth interview. Moreover, 4 fathers had also been interviewed to triangulate the data and to increase the meaningful insight. A question guideline was used to guide the in-depth interview process. Thematic analysis using an inductive approach was applied to analyze the transcripts. Results: Five themes were identified around changes in food restriction, pressure to eat, giving the explanation, child involvement, and modeling. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, parents demand their children to have good eating behavior. However, they tend to give autonomy more often to their child to get the snacks. It would make the children lead to having poor and unhealthy eating behaviors.

Abstract

Background: Many low- and middle-income countries are now facing the “double burden” of malnutrition, one of them is overweight/obesity. Over 340 million children and adolescents were overweight and obesity in 2016. Obesity among adolescents may increase, in part due to changes in the food system, which now offers a wide range of ultra-processed foods (UPF) that minimize preparation time. Indonesia has also a large and rapidly growing market for unhealthy drinks, which are sold in various places including schools and hospitals. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of UPF and beverages consumption and other related factors with nutritional status of senior high school students in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted in Pontianak investigated the association between UPF consumption and nutritional status of SHS students. Data collection was conducted at Imanuel and Petrus SHS Pontianak in June 2023, involving 273 students from grades 10th and 11th. Weight and height measurement was obtained for calculating the BMI for age Z-scores, while UPF and beverages consumption was obtained by FFQ. Structured questionnaire, 24-hours recall, and IPAQ-S were used for assessing sociodemographic status, Total Energy Intake and Physical Activity Level. Data analysis used SPSS version 26. Results: The result found 40.3% of students were overweight-obesity; 51.6% consumed excessive UPF and beverages. It showed an inverse association between UPF consumption and nutritional status. The study identifies UPF and beverages consumption, gender, mother's education level, and family income as factors associated with nutritional status among adolescents. Conclusion: The consumption of ultra-processed Foods was high, with the highest UPF intake came from snacks and sweets (22.4%). There was inverse association between UPF and beverages consumption with nutritional status. There was also significant association between UPF and beverages, gender, mother education level and family income with nutritional status.

Abstract

Modernization leads to nutrition transition process, shifts eating behavior into a more modernized pattern that may increase the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Using the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB) data, this study assessed the differences in eating behavior between metropolization levels among Indonesian adults. 1482 adults aged 18-64 in six provinces were involved. Eating behavior was defined by the number of eating events, food preparation, eating location, eating companion, and activity while eating. Metropolization level was defined based on the gross domestic regional product (GRDP), GRDP/capita, population size, population density, and non-agricultural worker proportion. Differences in each eating behavior dimension between metropolization levels were analyzed using the Chi-square test (p<0.05) and adjusted with sociodemographic factors using logistics regression. 83.9% of the subjects had ≤5 eating events/day and dominated by 4-5 eating events/day. 51.2% and 83.1% of the subjects cooked and ate at home frequently, indicating the practice of traditional eating. Meanwhile, the tendency towards modern dimension can be seen as the proportion of eating alone frequently and eating only less frequently were 60.3% and 67.9%, respectively. Eating behavior differed significantly (p<0.05) between metropolization levels, except for eating with company. Proportion of not cooking and eating away from home frequently increase as metropolization level increases (p<0.05) after adjusted with sociodemographic factors while eating alone and eating only showed no significant differences. Modern eating behavior tendency increases along with metropolization level. Improving living and working conditions in metropolitan areas is imperative to facilitate healthier eating behavior among the inhabitants.

Abstract

Introduction: Straddling work and childcare harms working moms' health, potentially their children too. To address this, child rearing workplace policies are needed. These would promote work-life balance and ensure both mothers' and children's well-being, ultimately protecting pregnant and parenting women at work. Objective: This study aims to explore the gaps between available child rearing workplace policy for working mothers and the implementation on the field while taking its implications into account. Methods: We reviewed literature from PubMed electronic database. Predefined keywords were developed and chosen. Relevant articles were filtered according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Furthermore, all articles were reviewed independently and those that match were included and charted through Microsoft Excel based on each articles’ characteristics. Results: There are 13 workplace policies related to childcare for working mothers in the included articles. The most common policy was paid maternity leave. Other frequently mentioned policies included lactation support and facilities, flexible work arrangements, and daycare facilities. All policies have different implementation rates and implications to both working mothers and their children. Conclusion: Supportive child rearing policies at work benefit everyone: employers, employees, and their families, leading to a better nutritional and health status, hence increase overall quality of life.
