Abstract

This study aims to identify the educational needs of urban adolescents in Jakarta to improve their Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) regarding Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs). Its goal is to develop tailored educational material topics regarding SSBs related to health risks, such as obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research was conducted across five public senior high schools in all five areas of Jakarta from January to February 2024. The quantitative component involved a survey of 488 students to assess their KAP related to SSBs. The KAP formed the basis of the educational materials. The qualitative approach involves 2 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with students and 8 In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) with teachers and experts focusing on adolescents’ nutrition and health. The insights were used for the development of the educational materials. The qualitative data were transcribed, coded, and analysed thematically to pinpoint essential educational materials that could bridge the gaps identified in the quantitative data. Results showed that only 18.8% of adolescents had good knowledge, 13.9% had a positive attitude, and 32.4% exhibited healthy practices regarding SSBs. Findings revealed critical issues: poor knowledge, negative attitude, and unhealthy practice regarding the maximum daily sugar intake, inadequate understanding of the nutritional value of sugar, infrequent checking of sugar content before consuming SSBs, limited awareness of SSBs' negative health impacts, and poor knowledge of SSB examples and food labelling practices. Educational materials are needed to address critical gaps in adolescents’ KAP related to SSBs. These materials should focus on raising awareness about the health risks of SSBs, understanding sugar content, improving food labelling literacy, and promoting healthier beverage choices. Future research should assess the implementation and effectiveness of tailored educational strategies to enhance adolescents' KAP related to SSBs, address critical health risks, and promote informed beverage choices.

Abstract

Overweight/obesity is increasing in developing countries, including Indonesia, being more prevalent in urban than rural areas. Understanding about associated factors of overweight/obesity is important for intervention purposes. The study objective was to assess factors associated with overweight/obesity in urban Indonesians. This cross-sectional study involved primary data collection among 864 adults aged 18-45 years in five major urban cities of Indonesia. Weight, height, waist and hip circumference were measured, and overweight/obesity was defined as BMI>25 kg/m2. Factors associated to overweight/obesity was ellicited by logistic regression. The study showed that proportion of overweight/obesity was significantly higher among women than men (42.8% and 29.2%). Median total energy intake was 1974 kcal/day, and median fat intake was high (75.3 g; 25th-75th percentile: 49.6-109.4 g). More than 70 percent of subjects consumed high energy dense food/beverages often. Only around 27 percent of the subjects had high intensity physical activity/PA level and more than 50 percent spent >6 hours using TV/computer, indicating low PA level. After adjusting for confounders, often consumption of high energy dense food consistenly showed association, although not signficant, with overweight/obesity. Moreover, men with higher sedentary activities indicated by TV/computer usage >6 hours/day and women with less days of performing vigorous PA had 1.4 and 3 times higher odds to become overweight/obese, respectively. Thus, overweight/obesity prevention should focus on reduction of consumption of high-dense energy food, including fat intake; coupled with increasing PA level by having more days of vigourous recreational PA and reduction of TV/computer usage, especially among married older urban adult.

Abstract

Background: Mothers’ compliance with national nutrition programs during the first 1000 days of life is crucial to optimal child growth and development. However, national surveys have revealed low levels of compliance, suggesting challenges faced by mothers. Thus, understanding the facilitating factors of mother’s consistent good compliance is important. Objectives: To explore the facilitating factors of mothers’ good compliance with four national nutrition programs during the first 1000 days of life. Methos: Of the 48 mothers of 6-23-month-old children interviewed in this study, 10 demonstrated consistent compliance with the recommended maternal iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and vitamin A capsule (VAC) supplementation programs. In-depth exploration and analysis were carried out on the 10 mothers, focusing on the roles of health staff, information exposure, knowledge, and family support. Results: All mothers had a strong initiative to seek information from various sources, including healthcare staff, the mother and child health book, and Internet (among urban mothers), irrespective of their socio-demographic backgrounds. Frequent information exposure resulted in good knowledge, except on VAC supplementation. Healthcare staff, particularly midwives, played significant roles in mothers’ compliance to IFA supplementation and breastfeeding, but much less for complementary feeding practices. The role of Posyandu cadres was limited to the dissemination of VAC supplementation schedules. Support from family members were observed in all programs, mainly in providing information and maintaining motivation. Conclusions: Information exposure and family support were key to mothers’ good compliance. The roles of healthcare staff, particularly in providing complementary feeding information, should be strengthened.

Abstract

Background: Good nutritional knowledge is important for athletes to develop positive attitude and proper dietary practices, especially supporting training, competition, and peak performance. Lack of knowledge can lead to energy and nutrient imbalances, which can disrupt physiological adaptation, recovery, and athletic performance. Unlike previous studies on knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP), which generally only assess questionnaire scores on eating practices without directly analyzing dietary intake, this study takes a different approach by directly analyzing dietary intake and considering differences between rest days and training days. Objectives: To analyze the association between nutritional knowledge and attitudes towards dietary intake among competitive elite athletes in DKI Jakarta.

Abstract

In recent decades, the world has faced a dual challenge in nutritional health: the rising rates of maternal obesity and the high prevalence of stunting in children. Data from the World Health Organization in 2022 revealed that over 2.5 billion adults were overweight or obese, with 44% of them being women. This condition occurs not only in high-income countries but also in low- and middle-income nations. National surveys indicate that the prevalence of obesity among adult women (over 18 years old) has increased from 29.3% (Basic Health Survey 2018) to 31.2% (Indonesian Health Survey 2023).
