Abstract

Cattle and buffaloes have economic value as a source of protein and draught power. The people of Sulawesi also use buffalo in various custom and religious activities. Infections by Trematodes may disrupt livestock productivity. In Indonesia, endemic Schistosomiasis can only be found in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia (Lindu, Napu, and Bada Valleys). There is no data on the status of Trematode infection in cattle and buffalo animals in the area. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional design to measure the prevalence of Trematodosis in cattle and buffalo around the endemic areas of Schistosomiasis in July-November 2016. A total of 261 stool samples consisting of 173 cattle and 88 buffaloes from 7 villages (Anca, Bewa, Mount Gintu, Sedoa, Wangga, Watumaeta, and Wuasa Villages) were collected and stored at 2-8 °C until further analysis. The Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory method was chosen to quantify the infection by trematodes. The prevalence of the overall trematodosis of this study was 85.06%. The prevalence of Trematodosis in buffalo was higher than in cattle and differed statistically (P<0.05). The highest prevalence was Paramphistomiasis (75.48%), followed by Fascioliasis (67.05%) and Schistosomiasis japonica (30.27%). The trematodosis prevalence of each village also varied and differed statistically (P<0.05). Intensites of infection of mild, moderate, and severe infections were reported in this study. Mixed infections by two even three species of trematodes were reported in this study. Two newly endemic Schistosomiasis villages are reported, namely Bewa Village and Gunung Gintu. The results of this study are used as a basis for controlling Trematodosis in large ruminants in endemic areas especially with zoonotic potential.

Abstract

Studies on the role of domestic animals in the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica in the West Lore Sub-district, Poso District, are still limited despite its importance as zoonosis. This study used a cross-sectional design to determine schistosomiasis prevalence in domestic mammals and identify the relative contribution of each mammalian species’ schistosomiasis transmission in the West Lore Sub-District. Fecal samples were obtained from 209 animals (seven buffaloes, 70 dogs, 44 cattle, 86 pigs, and two horses). The Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory technique was used to detect both the occurrence of S. japonicum egg in feces and the intensity of schistosomiasis infection. The examination of 1852 human fecal samples using the Kato-Katz method was carried out by the Laboratory of Schistosomiasis Lengkeka. The measurement of environmental pollution with S. japonicum eggs and the relative contribution of each species in the transmission was performed. The highest prevalence of S. japonicum infection in animals was in horses (100%; 2/2), cattle (54.55%; 24/44), and pigs (51.16%; 44/86). The prevalence in buffaloes and dogs was 28.57% (2/7) and 32.86% (23/70). Cattle (69.74%) were the main contributors to S. japonicum eggs contamination in the environment, followed by pigs (21.95%) and buffaloes (4.71%). This study reported a high prevalence of schistosomiasis in animals (45.46%), while low human schistosomiasis prevalence (0.59%).

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study reported that a 15-month-old intact female African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) was presented to IPB University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to evaluate a 1.5 cm í— 1.5 cm í— 0.5 cm mass on the left ventral thorax, three days after the mass was first discovered by the owner. Overgrown nails were observed on all four toes of each of the four limbs of the hedgehog. The body weight was 150 g, and the axial temperature was 36.5°C. The heart and respiratory rates were 180 per minute and 40 per minute, respectively. After a thorough physical examination, the patient was diagnosed with subcutaneous abscesses and overgrown nails. The abscess was surgically resected using a local anesthetic. The overgrown nails were trimmed to prevent further injury and the recurrence of abscesses. Following surgery, the hedgehog was discharged directly from the hospital and treated using Amoxicillin 15 mg/kg per oral every 12 hours for seven days, daily routine wound cleaning with sodium chloride, and topical powder of neomycin sulfate 5 mg/g and bacitracin 250 IU/g. The patient responded effectively to the systemic treatment, and medical signs and symptoms resolved. The hedgehog fully recovered from the subcutaneous abscess 14 days after the first hospital visit. No recurrence was reported in the subsequent month after resolution.

Abstract

This research aims to detect the prevalence of Scopulariopsis sp. and Penicillium sp. in African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) bred at Golden Dhonje Farm, Bogor District. Twenty hedgehogs were sampled to detect the presence of Scopulariopsis sp. and Penicillium sp. The clinical signs in the sampled African pygmy hedgehogs include alopecia, crusty skin, and dermatitis. The presence of the fungus was confirmed by taking skin samples and then culturing them on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) supplemented with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. Macroscopic and microscopic morphology were observed to identify the two fungal genera. Twenty hedgehogs were sampled, and the results showed that eight of them (40%) were infected with Scopulariopsis sp., six (30%) were infected with Penicillium sp., and four (20%) were co-infected with both species. The total prevalence of hedgehogs affected by these fungi is 90%. This study found differences in infection rates of Scopulariopsis sp. and Penicillium sp. among different age groups and sexes. This study is the first to isolate Scopulariopsis sp. and Penicillium sp. from the skins of African pygmy hedgehogs in Indonesia, which are potential zoonotic pathogens. Further research is needed to expand the sample area, identify other types of fungi, and enhance the understanding of fungal diseases in African pygmy hedgehogs, thereby ensuring the safety of these animals in Indonesia.
