Abstract

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) continued to decline from secondary schools to universities level, as well as in lab, teaching and research policy-making and technology. This is triggered by the absence and minority of women in policy and decision-making regarding research in science and technology. Women’s leadership is very low in the area of energy use, adaptation to climate change, and economic production. In the formal sector, only 10% of women are in the sector of STI (science, technology, innovation). Only 5% of women who become members of the national academy of science technology in the respective disciplines. Why does it happen? This paper studies several vocational schools in Jakarta to answer those questions. This research found that the fear of a mother and daughter against STEM is not just happening today, but deeply rooted in the tradition, even in modern era. Besides bullying both in school and in the community, girls’ interest in STEM is also still very low compared to boys. However, this study found how girls copes those hindrances with strong will via their agency to win STEM in their education pathways.

Abstract

Maintaining the karst and biodiversity of the North Kendeng Mountains, which extend across five kabupaten in Central Java (Rembang, Blora, Pati, Kudus, and Grobogan) is not an easy task. A PT Semen Indonesia (PT SI) cement factory has been established on Bokong Rembang Mountain, and PT Semen Grobogan (PT SG) was planned to be opened in Kecamatan Tanggungharjo at the end of 2016. According to the Bupati of Grobogan, Sri Sumarni, as quoted by Tribun Jateng on 2 September 2016, “in addition to pressure from the people, the establishment of a cement factory will absorb a lot of local jobs”. She then went on to say that the authority to approve PT SG is not only in the hands of Grobogan Kabupaten Government but also in the hands of the Central Java Provincial Government. “This means that the Kabupaten Government just goes along with the Provincial Government policies and that of Governor Ganjar Pranowo. With the Central Government planning a cement factory moratorium we will get together with the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) and prominent local figures to discuss the issue.

Abstract

The importance of Critical Reading Skill (CRS) and gender sensitivity to support every individual’s success in academic, personal, and social life has long been acknowledged. The accelerating advancement of technology makes the need for CRS & gender sensitivity more crucial. However, due to various factors, CRS development through the educational process has not been satisfactory. This research reviews current ideas and studies on the nature of CRS, gender sensitivity, the nature of fiction, and their role in developing CRS. To get ideas about how to implement using fiction to promote CRS & gender sensitivity, this study ends with the practical description of a step by step of using fiction with gender sensitivity to promote CRS through an instructional model. This study employs Classroom Action Research (CAR). Action research designs are systematic procedures used by teachers to gather qualitative data to address improvements in their educational setting, their teaching, and the learning of their students. Action research enables teachers to keep track and take account of the many aspects of their work with students through a systematic routine. This study aims to investigate gender sensitivity & the critical reading strategies employed by Indonesian English as Foreign Language (EFL) students. To achieve the aim of the study, the Stringer’s Action Research Model that is a cyclical and repetitive process of inquiry i.e. Look, Think, and Act was utilized. This study used Bloom’s taxonomy as useful reference tool to describe the ability of thinking simply for undergraduate EFL students. Indonesian EFL students are encouraged to employ critical reading strategies systematically thorough their reading process to engage in critical reading & gender sensitivity. The instruction of the critical reading strategies based on cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy is also explicit and direct so that students are able to ask many organized and higher order questions. Throughout the study, students are also encouraged to believe that their reading difficulties were due to lack of strategies & gender sensitivity rather than a lack of their ability and skills.

Abstract

Indonesian muslim participation in the democratic arena is now contested with the arrival of the decentralization process in 423 districts since 1992. The most notable movement is the quest for Islamic identity in the rejuvenation of Shari ‘ah Ordinances which is interpreted symbolically and transcripturally. These ordinances have unrecognized the importance of gender lens in its practice. Until the end of 2007 no less than 63 districts have ratified Perda Syari’ah. In general, these ordinances designed to govern three aspects of public life, namely (1) to eradicate social crimes especially prostitutions and gambling; (2) to enforce ritual observances among Muslims such as reading the Qur’an, Friday congregations and fasting during Ramadan; and (3) to govern the way people dress up in public sphere especially the head-veiling for women. Although Islam is the religion of the majority there are also non-muslim among Indonesian and institutionally Indonesia is not an Islamic state, therefore the ratification of Perda Syari’ah betrayed national consensus agreed upon by the founding fathers of the republic.

Abstract

Students who continue to struggle with English proficiency suggest that the use of realistic assessment in classroom instruction is subpar. As a result, the purpose of this study is to investigate the barriers to and facilitators of real assessment in the classroom and the gap between instructors' conceptions of the concept and its actual use. The research strategy used in this study is a qualitative one, namely descriptive research, and the data gathering tools include interviews and observations of English instructors in Manokwari. Two high school English instructors participated in this study. The results of this research indicate that teachers in Papua have a good understanding of authentic assessment as indicated by various detailed explanations of authentic assessment by teachers. The results obtained from interviews and observations in the implementation show the process of preparing assessments and various types of authentic assessments carried out by teachers in the classroom. However, in carried out the assessment, some of the problems faced by the teacher included the inability to manage the class, determine the assessment items and limited of time. Based on the results of interviews and observations conducted, there is a match between understanding and implementation, meaning that there is no discrepancy between understanding and implementation in class.
