The purpose of this study is to analyze the elements of romanticism contained in Bella and Edward's relationship in the film "Twilight", as well as to provide a deeper understanding of how the concept of romantic love is interpreted and realized in the context of modern literature. This research is descriptive qualitative and uses textual analysis as a data analysis technique. This research relies solely on secondary data, with the movie "Twilight" as the main source. Data collection is done through document analysis technique. The results show that Bella and Edward's romantic relationship in the movie "Twilight" is realized in several elements, including affection, trust, togetherness, and sharing time and activities. The depiction of the element of affection is stronger than other elements through scenes and dialog in Twilight. Romance in Twilight shows how love can bring sacrifice, affection, and intimacy, reflecting the complexity of the concept of romantic love in modern literature.

Abstract

The significance of optimistic thinking is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for individuals. This research aims to explore the value of optimism in the character Hazel Grace from The Fault in Our Stars. The study employs Snyder's theory of optimism, as discussed in Goleman's work (2002), as its foundational framework. Utilizing qualitative research methods, data were collected through various techniques, including data reduction, selection, presentation in the form of quotations, and drawing conclusions as the final step. Upon analyzing Hazel Grace's optimism, the findings revealed that she exhibits five indicators of high expectations, four traits of resilience (not easy to give up), five instances of self-motivation, two indicators of high self-confidence, and four traits reflecting her determination not to surrender. This research is limited to examining the optimistic values of Hazel Grace as the central character. Future studies could expand this analysis to assess the optimism levels of all characters within the narrative

This research, conducted by Plan Indonesia, YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU), and the Klaten Association of Disabled People (PPDK), with support from ELRHA, UKAid, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Plan International, aimed to foster inclusive research by integrating Views from the Frontline (VFL) guidelines with the Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) method. The study involved women, people with disabilities, including youth and children with disabilities, as well as the elderly. The research participants included people with disabilities, the elderly, health cadres, and elderly cadres. The research was conducted from May to December 2023 in the disaster-prone areas of Kemalang and Manisrenggo Districts, Central Java. Data analysis was done through triangulation, utilizing multi-party meetings to verify findings based on various times, places, and participants. The research identified types of threats related to the Merapi volcano eruption and needs based on the Humanitarian Inclusion Standard, focusing on gender, age, and ability. Key recommendations include integrating disaster risk management approaches with community-led action plans, enhancing inclusion, promoting local leadership, and developing a national advocacy strategy to increase community involvement in disaster risk reduction efforts, particularly for women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Abstract

Since 2017, the mothers of Nguter, affected by environmental pollution caused by PT. RUM in Sukoharjo, Central Java, have mobilized to voice their environmental protests through prayer circles and religious sermons, conducted from house to house as well as in mosques. Throughout this process, a transformation in the meaning of certain Qur’anic terminologies they employ has taken place, including dzalim, al-‘alam, jihad, and mustadh‘afin. The term dzalim, which was previously used to refer to those who oppress the Muslim community, has been redefined to denote PT. RUM and its affiliates, including lawyers and judges who have supported the company during legal proceedings. Environmental awareness has also increased, as reflected in the growing use of the term al-‘alam. Previously infrequent in local discourse due to the community’s access to clean air and water, this term has now become integral to the resistance narrative following the contamination of the air and the Gupit River by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pollution. Similarly, the concept of jihad has been internalized through Surah Al-‘Ankabut (29:69) and is manifested in the resistance against environmental degradation, which is regarded as both a moral and spiritual obligation. Furthermore, the term mustadh‘afin, frequently appearing in religious sermons and protest activities, has been adopted by the mothers of Nguter to self-identify as an oppressed community due to the presence of the rayon factory. The meaning of this term has expanded from ‘the downtrodden’ to encompass those ‘whose rights have been taken away’ and ‘those whose inheritance has been stripped.’ This semantic shift illustrates how the community interprets ecological disaster and constructs a collective identity rooted in religious values as they struggle against environmental pollution.

Abstract

This research discusses the phenomenon of the FWB relationship depicted in the characters Tom and Summer in the movie 500 Days of Summer. Their relationship shows complex emotional conflicts due to differences in mindset, lifestyle, and emotional needs of the two characters. This research uses Adler's individual psychology approach including the principles of superiority, inferiority, lifestyle, creative self, fictional goals, and social interest. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, using literature study techniques for data collection. The results of this study show that Tom's dependency based on inferiority contradicts Summer's lifestyle or principles. The incongruity created stems from Tom's constant need for external validation, but Summer chooses freedom in emotional relationships and life paths. This imbalance was a major source of conflict, as Tom expected a deeper commitment, while Summer felt the pressure threatened her freedom. This research contributes to the field of individual psychology. Through the approach of Adler's principles, it offers new insights into the cause and effect in a non-committal relationship or FWB (Friends With Benefit). The results of the study provide new insights into the psychological dynamics in relationships without commitment, particularly from the perspective of Adler's theory. The mismatch of lifestyles and goals between individuals in FWB relationships can trigger deep emotional conflict. This research not only contributes to understanding individual psychology, but also opens further discussion on how films and literary works portray the complexity of human relationships. By understanding FWB relationships through this theory, this research is expected to provide a new understanding of emotional conflict and expectations in romance relationships in the modern era.
