Abstract

This research examines the conflicts experienced by the main character, Angel, in a novel entitled Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, using a psychoanalytic approach grounded in Sigmund Freud’s theory of the id, ego, and superego (1923). The study aims to identify and classify the psychoanalytic elements within the narrative and analyze their implications on character development. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the data for this research was collected from the scripts in the novel and then classified based on Freud’s theory as the foundation to analyze the conversations found in the scripts. The findings showed that Angel’s past experiences have shaped her into a woman who finds it difficult to trust others, particularly in romantic relationships with man. The relationship between Michael and Angel as well as Michael Hosea’s strong ego play. Crucial roles in mediating these conflicts are providing Angel with the love and support necessary for healing. These findings demonstrate that understanding the psychoanalytic elements offers deeper insights into the characters’ emotional struggles and their journeys toward self-acceptance and redemption.

Abstract

Greater access to learning sources resulting from the advancement of the Internet and information technology helps students regulate their learning habits and achieve specific learning targets, including English language learning. This study analyzed English self-efficacy and technology-assisted self-regulated learning strategies among undergraduate students and how the two variables correlate. A total of 510 undergraduate students at Sam Ratulangi University, Indonesia, participated in the study. Two sets of questionnaires, including the Questionnaire of English Self-Efficacy (QESE) and the Technology-Based Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Questionnaire (TSRLQ), were administered in data collection. The data analyses included descriptive statistics and bivariate Pearson correlation calculations. This study found a heterogeneous profile of English self-efficacy and technology-assisted SRL. Meanwhile, the Pearson correlation calculation results revealed that English self-efficacy was significantly correlated with technology-assisted SRL in a positive direction. Thus, this study suggests that more efficacious students are more likely to apply technology-assisted SRL in their English language learning.

Abstract

This study examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) mediates the production and circulation of folklore in Turkey and Indonesia and asks: How does AI mediate folklore production and circulation in both contexts? And What similarities and differences characterize AI–folklore interaction from a sociological perspective? Using a qualitative comparative cultural sociology design, the analysis draws on Turkish sociological theory, Ziya Gokalp’s concept of halk kültürü and Şerif Mardin’s center–periphery framework alongside documentary and digital ethnographic observation of publicly accessible folklore texts, AI-mediated outputs (retellings, translations, summaries), and platform-based circulation. Findings show that AI mediates folklore production through textual regeneration, translation, narrative standardization, and platform-oriented adaptation, while circulation is shaped by recommendation, tagging, ranking, and translation interfaces that regulate visibility, dissemination, and the dominance of particular versions. Although both countries experience algorithmic pressures on cultural memory and narrative visibility, impacts diverge by context: Turkey’s institutionally anchored cultural authority tends to constrain AI toward selective continuity, whereas Indonesia’s pluralistic and decentralized landscape allows AI and platforms to operate as stronger cultural gatekeepers, enabling more transformative reinterpretations. Overall, the study concludes that AI is a structural cultural mediator whose sociological effects are context-dependent, amplifying existing power relations rather than uniformly transforming folklore.

Abstract

This community service project aimed to improve reading literacy and character education among elementary students through the integration of Minahasan folktales and the digital platform Qreatif.id. Conducted at SD Katolik St. Nikolaus Talawaan, North Minahasa, the program adopted a participatory and descriptive approach involving 20 third-grade students and three teachers. The activities combined guided reading sessions using local folktales and digital literacy training through Qreatif.id. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, and reflective interviews, and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results revealed significant improvements in students’ reading fluency, comprehension, moral reasoning, and motivation. The number of fluent readers increased from 20% to 75%, comprehension accuracy rose to 85%, and moral understanding improved by over 50%. Teachers also demonstrated greater confidence in integrating digital media into instruction. This study concludes that combining local cultural materials with digital platforms provides an effective, contextualized, and engaging model for literacy learning while promoting cultural preservation and 21st-century digital competencies.

Abstract

In the contemporary era of globalization and digital culture, local folktales continue to play a vital role in preserving cultural identity and moral values amid increasing cultural homogenization. This study explores how folktales from diverse cultures express universal human values and contribute to world literature. It analyzes six folktales from Minahasa (Indonesia), Turkey, and Vietnam—regions renowned for their rich oral storytelling traditions yet often underrepresented in comparative world literature research. The study addresses two central questions: Which universal themes are reflected in these folktales, and how do they exemplify David Damrosch’s three characteristics of world literature: circulation, transformation, and transcendence? Employing Damrosch’s theoretical framework, alongside the Aarne-Thompson-Uther (ATU) and Thompson’s Motif-Index classification systems, this qualitative comparative study identifies five recurring themes: transformation, love and sacrifice, rivalry, wisdom and betrayal, and moral justice. The findings reveal distinct levels of circulation, transformation, and transcendence among the folktales. While Minahasan folktales are more widely circulated within Indonesia, all six narratives exhibit adaptability and cross-cultural resonance, illustrating how local folktales safeguard cultural heritage while enriching global literary discourse. The study concludes that transcendence in world literature depends not only on circulation but also on a folktale’s capacity to convey universal human experiences through reinterpretation, translation, and cultural adaptation across societies.
