Abstract

This study aimed to describe the English needs of the Economics Management Study Program of Pekalongan University based on the perception of the English lecturers. The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The total sample used was 2 English lecturers in the Economics Management study program. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with a measurement scale in the form of numbers. The research data was described through needs, real conditions in the classroom, and the desire of the lecturer. The real conditions of learning in the classroom become a basic guideline for achieving the learning objectives in the target needs. These results were also adjusted to the wishes (Wants). Thus, it could be seen that according to the lecturers 'perception, English was an ability that had to be mastered in order to fulfill the students' self-need to understand the economic context in using English. Moreover, understanding and mastering the material supported students to compete in the world of work. From the lecturers’ perspective, it was known that speaking ability was the most important ability to be owned by students, and the difficulties most often faced by students according to the lecturer was in listening skill.

Abstract

Communication in the global era requires doer of the communication mastering English. In line to this condition, English is a necessity in education, including in Pekalongan. Many students of the second grade of SMP N 5 Pekalongan, often face difficulties in using modal auxiliary when constructing request sentences and it will affect the use of politeness strategies. This phenomenon occurs between teachers and students, or even among students. Based on the root of the problem, Team of PkM held a Training on the Use of Modal Auxiliary in Writing Request Sentences. The sample of this PKM activity was 33 students. PkM was held in 6 months, in the academic year of 2022/2023. PkM activity was done in 4 stages, namely socialization, training, mentoring and evaluation. This activity was carried out well. Each stage in the activity supports the plan to achieve the objectives of PkM. The result was measured from the results of the pre-test and post-test as a comparison in formulating the level of success. The results of the questionnaire showed an increase in aspects of understanding the aspect of auxiliary capital with the score (Good), examples of auxiliary capital (Very Good), its use (Very Good) and the social status of conversation actors (Good). Through this activity, students can distinguish and choose the appropriate use of modal auxiliary according to social status or age.

Abstract

Learning in endemic era is not inseparable from the use of technology to support teaching and learning process. The use of technology can be realized in the use of Vlog as a learning medium. Therefore, a workshop was needed for English teachers and the students in utilizing technology in the teaching learning process. This activity was aimed to: 1) facilitating workshop to the teachers on the use of vlog as teaching medium of descriptive text, and 2) providing training to the students in writing descriptive text based on the vlog they watched. The participants of this agenda were 33 people consisting of English teachers and seventh graders of SMPN 5 Sragi, Pekalongan regency. This activity was held in some stages, they were Vlog playback, presentation, writing practice, and feedback. The result of this workshop showed that the teachers got new experiences to innovate the teaching learning process, especially the use of learning media. Meanwhile, for the students, they felt enjoyable learning atmosphere. They could develop ideas for writing descriptive text assisted by learning media in the form of “Wonderful Black Canyon” Vlog.

Abstract

English is an international language which must be mastered by everyone including the members of IPNU and IPPNU. There were many competitions which were held to support English mastery, one of them is English speech competition. This competition motivated the members of IPNU and IPPNU to develop their English mastery. The purpose of this community service was to give accompaniment to the members of IPPNU Simbang Kulon branch so that they were able to write English speech script and they were able to perform it fluently and confidently in the IPNU IPPNU PORSENI Kecamatan Buaran in2023. The participants of this community service were the members of IPPNU Simbang Kulon branch. This community service was done in some steps. They were planning, implementation, evaluation, and report writing. The result of this community service showed that after joining this agenda, the participants could write English speech script based on the topic, using correct grammar and vocabulary. In addition, the participants were able to perform the speech confidently with the gesture, mimic, and eye contact. The participants were able to pronounce the utterance well and delivered the speech fluently. This community service was done successfully. It was proven that the one of the participants became the winner of the English speech competition in the PORSENI.

Abstract

Proses pembelajaran dilaksanakan secara bertahap pada pembelajaran struktur Bahasa Inggris. Tenses menjadi pedoman utama dalam penyusunan kalimat efektif. Simple Present Tense adalah bentuk tenses dasar yang harus dikuasai oleh para siswa SMP N 7 Batang. Justifikasi masalah yang muncul adalah 1) kesulitan siswa SMP N 7 Batang dalam memahami komponen kalimat aktif dan 2)kesulitan siswa SMP N 7 Batang dalam menggunakan kata kerja dan keterangan waktu dalam pola Simple Present Tense. Penyelenggaraan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dalam 4 tahap dan telah berjalan secara lancar. Tahap 1) sosiliasasi, 2) pelatihan, 3) pendampingan dan 4) evaluasi. Pada tahap sosialisasi, kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah wawancara kepada guru dan pelaksanaan pre test. Tahap berikutnya adalah tahap pelatihan berisi pemberian materi yang diawali dengan brainstorming dan pengajaran Simple Present Tenses. Tahap selanjutnya adalah pendampingan kepada siswa-siswa yang sedang menyelesaikan penugasan berkaitan pola Simple Present Tense. Tahap akhir adalah evaluasi yang berisi kegiatan post test. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian tersebut menunjukkan adanya peningkatan dengan data sebagai berikut: (1) Siswa sangat paham definisi Simple Present Tense, (2) Siswa sangat paham dalam menggunakan formula Simple Present Tense dengan komponen dengan benar dan (3) Siswa paham dalam membuat kalimat Simple Present Tense dengan kata kerja dan keterangan waktu.

Abstract

Many high school students face difficulties in mastering irregular verbs due to their inconsistent pattern and traditional method which was less engaging for the students. Traditional methods often rely on memorization and repetition, which tend to decrease the students’ motivation and engagement. The aim of this research is to find out whether the Verb Relay Race can improve the students’ mastery of irregular verbs. This research used a quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test in both experimental class, who received the Verb Relay Race method, and control class, who was received traditional method. The sample of this research was 61 students of class X.5 and X.7 at SMA N 1 Wiradesa. The research instrument was a fill-in-the-blank test consisting of 15 validated and reliable questions. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test were used to analyzed the data using SPSS. The result of the research showed that the experimental class gain score from the average score 48.5 to 74.7, showing a significance improvement in students’ mastery of irregular verbs. Moreover, the students showed a positive attitude through the game in learning irregular verbs, stating that the method was more enjoyable and less stressful. These findings suggested that the Verb Relay Race is fun and effective method for enhancing grammar proficiency, especially irregular verbs in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study explores the efficacy of the chunking strategy in enhancing reading comprehension among students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). A total of 62 students from two classes X TKJ 1 and X TKJ 2 at SMK Muhammadiyah Karanganyar participated in the research. Employing a quantitative approach through a quasi-experimental design, the study utilized pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires as instruments for data collection. The pre-test and post-test results were analyzed using SPSS 25, with the Mann-Whitney U Test yielding a significance value of 0.002. This statistical outcome suggests that the application of the chunking strategy had a significant and positive effect on students' reading comprehension performance. Accordingly, the findings affirm that the chunking strategy serves as an effective instructional method for fostering reading comprehension among EFL learners.

Abstract

Pembelajaran BIPA bukanlah hal yang mudah, terutama karena perbedaan latar belakang budaya dan bahasa para pelajarnya. Di Universitas Pekalongan, beberapa pelajar BIPA mengalami kesulitan dalam proses belajar. Salah satu kendala utama yang mereka hadapi adalah dalam pelafalan dan penggunaan kosakata warna. Kesulitan ini mempengaruhi kemampuan mereka dalam berkomunikasi secara tepat dalam konteks budaya Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, pelaksanaan pengabdian ini bertujuan memberikan pelatihan khusus terkait pembelajaran kosakata warna bagi para pelajar.      Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dalam 4 tahap, yaitu observasi, pelatihan, pendampingan dan evaluasi. Pada tahap observasi, pelajar BIPA diberikan wawancara dan pre test untuk mengukur kemampuan awal pelajar. Tahap berikutnya pelatihan dan pendampingan. Pada tahap tersebut pembelajaran dilaksanakan secara online dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran yang menarik berupa kartu dan pendampingan dilakukan dengan pemberian latihan soal tentang kosakata warna. Tahap akhir yang diberikan adalah evaluasi berupa post test.      Hasil dari pelaksanaan pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan memberikan dampak positif terhadap peningkatan kemampuan pelajar BIPA. Pelajar mampu mengenali, menyebutkan dan menggunakan kosakata warna dengan lebih tepat. Kegiatan ini memperkaya kosakata sekaligus meningkatkan kepercayaan diri pelajar dalam berbahasa Indonesia.
