Abstract

Recent studies have argued for the use of comic strips in language teaching, while concerns with the challenges in its application are also frequently highlighted. Using George’s (2008) model of literature review, the present study will elaborate on the use of comic strips as a medium of learning, its benefits, and the challenges in its implementation. The data sources are research articles related to the implementation of comic strips for language teaching, published in reputable international journals and accredited national journals from 2011 to 2020. The review reveals that previous studies have proven that comic strips in language teaching can promote students’ vocabulary, improve students' grammar competence, support the students' reading skills, and help the students who lack writing skills. However, these studies also show concerns on challenges in implementing comic strips in language teaching, such as its relevance, the choices of the topics, and how it cannot support spoken skills as much as it would support the written skills. It implies that while comic strips can be good media for teaching language, teachers should also find strategies in overcoming the challenges that may occur during its implementation.

Those are rules, physical environment, classroom climate, and teacher's role. The subject of this study was an English teacher in class XI MM 2 at SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja. This study was a case study with qualitative research design. The methods of data collection were observation and interview. The findings showed that the classroom management practices by the teacher were successful to be implemented for both the inclusive and regular students. The rules created and communicated by the teacher were effective to develop the students' behaviour and attitude as well as support the learning process. For the physical environment, the teacher provided spacious space for the physical disability student to move freely. The teacher gave positive and negative reinforcements for the students' attitude and behaviour. Besides, the teacher modified the lesson plan, instruction, and assessment based on the student's special needs. However, the teacher did not interact directly with the inclusive student's parents and it should be done to support the learning process. In addition, there was no special escort teacher and training for the teacher to support the learning process.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the novice English teachers’ knowledge about assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning in the context of Bali. Framed within a qualitative design, the study employed the qualitative method with a questionnaire and an interview guide as the instruments to collect the data. The obtained data were analysed using Interactive Model Analysis consisted of data collection, data display, data reduction, and verification or conclusion drawing. In the preliminary informal interview done towards several novice English teachers, it indicated that not all novice English teachers have heard about assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning. Therefore, this phenomenon led the researcher to conduct this study. Further, the results of this study showed that the novice English teachers’ knowledge about assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning are limited to the basic concepts only. Even, several novice English teachers never heard about those assessment types. It implies that the school principals and other stakeholders need to emphasize the concept of assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning for novice English teachers through teacher training, workshop, or seminar.

Abstract

As the travel and tourism industry becomes increasingly globalized, the ability to communicate effectively in English has become critical for professionals working in the sector. While previous research has established the importance of English language proficiency, questions remain regarding best practices for skills development. This study aims to explore the role of English proficiency for tourism professionals in the current era of globalization. Specifically, it examines strategies for improving language skills and considers the necessity of cultural competence training. A literature review was conducted analyzing peer-reviewed research on English language training programs, cultural awareness development, and the impacts of communication competencies. Gaps in existing knowledge were identified regarding training evaluation, longitudinal proficiency impacts, and links to business outcomes. The results of the study found that English functions as the lingua franca facilitating interactions between diverse travelers. Proficiency allows professionals to serve customers while cultural competence fosters understanding. Specialized training focusing on skills and sensitizing professionals is important. However, research on specific method efficacies, integrating cultural awareness, varied contexts, and proficiency-performance relationships remains limited. This study conclude that English proficiency and cultural competence are essential for tourism professionals in today's global environment. While their value is established, further empirical study of training best practices, longitudinal impacts, and relationships to tangible outcomes is warranted. Addressing gaps can optimize skills development approaches and business performance.

Abstract

This research intended to develop assessment instruments for English literacy in blended learning. The study employed survey, observation, interview, and document study as the methods with a questionnaire, observation checklist, interview guide, and school document as the instruments to collect the data framed within RnD design with the 4D model by Thiagarajan et al. The developed instruments were categorized as ‘very high validity’ and ‘very good’ for their content validity (1.00) and product quality (96% and 98%) by the two judges. It indicates that assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning combined with authentic materials are necessary to improve the learning process as well as the students’ English literacy skills. It also implies that English teachers need to highlight the use of assessment for learning and assessment as learning since those assessments lack attention previously.

Abstract

This research is designed to describe D3 Hospitality Denpasar Academy of Tourism students’ perception toward foreign language learning especially Japanese and English to maximize the process of foreign language learning. Framed within a qualitative design, this study employed observation, survey, and interview methods with an observation sheet, a questionnaire, and an interview guide as the instruments to collect the data. The study results showed that the student’s perception of foreign language learning was that Japanese is more difficult than English. It was because the students found more challenges in writing and pronunciation during the learning process of Japanese. Further, it was affected by the learning frequency, in which English is being learned from elementary to higher education levels. Meanwhile, Japanese is only learned at the higher education level and the application of Japanese in daily life tends to be limited. This indicates that limited learning of foreign languages other than English has a major influence on perception of learning a foreign language.

Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the error performed by the tour and travel business students in English class in the form of simulation. Framed within a qualitative design, this research used error classification theory by Thornbury. The findings showed that there are 5 lexical errors, 35 grammar errors, and 11 discourse errors performed by the students as a tour guide. It implied that lexical error is the least type of error and grammar error is the major type of error performed by the students.
