Abstract

Self-efficacy is necessary for EFL student in controlling their own motivation, behavior, and social environments toward their language learning. Anxiety obstructs the student in improving their language skill in language learning. This research deals with the correlation between self-efficacy and listening anxiety experienced by EFL college students at English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. The purpose of this research is to investigate the students’ self-efficacy and whether it is in correlation with their listening anxiety. The population of the research is obtained from all of the 2019 students (the second year students) who have already have taken Basic Listening course in their first year of study. This study is conducted in correlational research by using random sampling. The researcher collects data by using two instruments: listening self-efficacy questionnaire and listening anxiety questionnaire. The result of this study showed there are correlation between EFL students’ listening self-efficacy and their listening anxiety.  The correlation between the two aspects is low and it is in the same direction. On the other hand, students’ speaking anxiety and self-efficacy stand in the medium level. They are not high and also not low.

Abstract

Vocabulary (kosakata) is the core component of all aspects of language competences. Someone's vocabulary greatly affects the ability in learning language primarily for reading. Indonesian students who study English as a foreign language, especially junior high school students, have difficulty in reading English text. This is because their lack of mastery and knowledge of vocabulary and words that are not familiar so reading comprehension does not achieve. When students find difficult words in reading, they tend to ask the teacher or open dictionary directly. Thus, the level of students' understanding of the word is merely understand the interpretation not understand the meaning of words. Therefore, the author proposes a vocabulary learning strategies that students can use while reading, namely, Vocabulary Journal. This vocabulary journal is used by the students during reading, when they find words that are considered as difficult or unfamiliar. Those words are recorded into the journal so that students can remember and explore the word, by writing some of components associated with the word. The components are the meaning (makna kata), part of speech (kategori kata), a sentence, synonym or antonym, and a picture. By writing and understanding these components, students can understand the words and the text they read well. So the message or idea of the text can be achieved. Furthermore, by using this journal, students are expected become more self-sufficient in achieving the learning objectives.

Abstract

Some students feel scared when they have to perform speech in front of public. They feel a kind of tension, worry and discomfort during the speech performance. Therefore, this research was aimed to find the level of speech self – efficacy performed by students who had taken Public Speaking class at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was a descriptive research. The population was second year students registered in the Public Speaking Class of English Language Educational Program. The sample was taken by using random sampling. It was a class from English Language Educational Program. The chosen sample consisted of 29 students. The data were collected through a questionnaire that consist of 8 items divide 48 questions of speech self – efficacy. The results of this study shows that the students’ level speech self-efficacy was medium. It means that the students need more self – efficacy to increase their self-efficacy and motivation in studying and to improve their ability in delivering speech.

Abstract

Pronunciation plays a significant role in effective communication. The incomprehensible pronunciation will lead to misunderstanding in communication. This present study aims to examine commonly mispronounced sounds and types of errors in the context of vowel sounds. This study investigated the pronunciation error of speech performance to get more naturalistic pronunciation as data. The source of data of this study was six speech recordings delivered by students at the speech class of spoken English activities at English Department (Universitas Negeri Padang). The recordings were analyzed to obtain pronunciation errors from the speeches. After it is done, the errors are were measured and interpreted. The result of this study revealed [æ], [i:], [ə], [əʊ], and [eɪ] were frequently made errors. These sounds were substituted as several sounds. Therefore, it is suggested that these specific errors should be taken into consideration when teaching English to L1 Indonesian EFL students.

Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of genre text that is learned by english department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The students must be able to write this genre text. The aim of this study is to analyze the ability of students in writing an analytical exposition text.  It was a descriptive quantitative research conducted for third semester English departments students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research focused on how is the students’ ability in writing the thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence of analytical exposition text. The population of this research is third semester English department of Unicersitas Negeri Padang, and the sample was from educational class, it was K-3 class which consists of 20 students. the students were asked to write analytical exposition text and then students’ writing were analyzed by using the rubric of analytical exposition text which consists of four aspect, that are thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence. Based on the findings, there are four students who are in excellent level, five students in proficient level, ten students in fair level, and one student in inadequate level. Overall, the ability of third semester English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang is in proficient level.

Abstract

There are some ways to enhance students’ vocabularies. One of them is using online applications, Magoosh Application. This study is to determine the efficiency of utilizing the Magoosh application in enhancing the vocabularies of students in the English Department of UNP. An experimental research design will use in this study to investigate the extent to which the use of these applications. Also, the instrument of data collection technique are tests and a questionnaire. The respondents in this study were 20 students of English  Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. They were given pre-test before using Magoosh and post-test after using Magoosh. Then, followed by giving 15 questions for questionnaire. The results showed that there is an improvement from the pre-test to the post-test after the students use Magoosh application. The improvement is 24.53%. The pre-test and post-test proved to be higher in the final test. It can be concluded that using the Magoosh application can improve students' vocabulary. Moreover, from the satisfaction of the students it shows that 63% of the respondents agree that Magoosh helps them to enhance their vocabularies. Thus, the implementation of Magoosh application is usually recommended to be an exciting technique in coaching gaining knowledge of method to inspire the students in vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the level of foreign language anxiety in listening and reading skills of EFL students in English language education study program and English language literature study program at  FBS UNP. This research employed the following questionnaires as the research instruments: Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Questionnaire (FLLAQ) adapted from Marzec-Stawiarska (2013) and Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Questionnaire adopted from Azhari Muhlis (2017). The results of this study indicated that the majority of the English language education program students and English language literature program students of UNP have a high level of foreign language anxiety in listening and reading skills. To accomplish a better learning outcome, it is strongly advised that students become aware of their anxiety and deal with it through a lot of practice, peer-to-peer support, and optimistic thought. Furthermore, teachers can be more innovative in making language skills classes more enjoyable and relaxing for students to accomplish better learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study uses quasi-experimental methods. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of Anecdote Stories To Enrich EFL College Students’ Vocabularies and To Reduce Their Reading Anxiety At English Department. The population of this research were EFL Students’ At English Department UNP. The research sample was 45 students which were divided into two classes which are 25 students from class K’2 and 20 students from NK’1. This study's instrumentation consisted of a pre-test and post-test vocabulary test with 100 short answer questions, as well as a reading anxiety test. The results of those tests were obtained after analyzing the data with SPSS 26 for Windows' Paired sample T-test. It shows the mean of pre-test  and post-test score in K’2 classes were 51,20 and 56,00. Meanwhile the mean of pre-test and post-test score in the NK'1 classes were 47,90 and 52,90. Moreover,  pupils’ result for students anxiety after conducted reading anxiety test in form of pre-test and post-test indicated that are 4% rising score in agree point  while pre-test was 41% and post-test was 45% in K2 classes. In NK2 classes, the differences can be seen in strongly agree point, with 4% rising score from 5% strongly agree to 9% strongly agree. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students who learn through anecdotes as teaching medium do better than students who learn through conventional media. Moreover, reading anxiety of the students decrease because a lot of them have self-confident to answer the post-test in reading anxiety test after conducted the anecdote. The level's significance is 0.05, which is higher than the significance test, which is 0.000 with a degree of 5 percent. Moreover, it is also found that the anecdotes can reduce EFL students’ reading anxiety at Universitas Negeri Padang especially in English major classes.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the application of the use of English children's literature, especially short stories to enrich students' vocabulary mastery. The population of this research is EFL College Students in the English department of UNP academic year 2021/2022. Sampling was done by using a random sampling method. The number of samples in this study was 40 students. Data was collected through a questionnaire. This research is descriptive quantitative design research with a quantitative approach. Based on the results of the study, the pre-test value in the K3 class was 553.7 and the post-test value in the K3 class was 583.5. The results of the normality test of the data on the pre-test and post-test for the K3 class were normally distributed with a pre-test sig value of 0.069 and a post-test sig value of 0.078. In class K4 the average score of the students in the pre-test was 566.2 and while the post-test average score for the K4 class was 613.4. The results of the normality test of the data in the pre-test and post-test for class K4 were normally distributed with a pre-test sig value of 0.200 and a post-test sig value of 0.200. The results of the t-test carried out are the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.024 < 0.05, there is a difference in the results of the pre-test and post-test. For the K3 class anxiety reading, the pre-test average score was 85.5 and the post-test average was 91.4. In class K4 for anxiety reading, the pre-test score was 90.5 and the post-test score was 85.5. The results of the pre-test and post-test reading, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.045 < 0.05. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of English children's literature, especially short stories can be a solution to increasing vocabulary and decreasing reading anxiety for EFL college students' at the English Department of UNP.

Abstract

Digital children's literature is a listening and reading medium that can be accessed not only by children but also adults. The aims of this study to determine whether using digital children's literature Storynory.com has a good impact on reducing students' listening anxiety. A collection of digital children's literature stories from Storynory.com is used in this research. A quantitative technique and a quasi-experimental research design are used in this research. This research has a population of EFL students, especially students enrolled in the (UNP) for the 2022/2023 academic year. Data is collected by using pre-test which is has 20 question, daily treatment which is contain 15 stories (1 day one stories), and post-test which is has 20 questions. Data was analyzed by SPSS 20. Based on the study's findings, digital children's literature Storynory.com help students feel less anxious about listening. This proves that the utilization of children's digital literature is a successful medium that has a positive effect and can be a solution in reducing listening anxiety of EFL college students in the English Department, UNP.
