Abstract

Inability to reach the effectiveness in using maxim makes it turns into misunderstanding of communication.  It is called violation of maxim. This study is aimed to seek quantity maxim violation performed by characters in Richard Kletter and Michele Samit’s movie Stolen by My Mother: Kamiyah Mobley (2020) This research was descriptive qualitative analysis. The data were collected from utterances of the characters and then were analyzed by using Grice’s theory (1975).  The result of this study shows that all characters violated the quantity maxim in 18 times, with different categories of violation.  The most dominant category of quantity maxim violation is when the speakers talk too much and give too short contribution in conversation (55%). The other categories quantity maxim violation in the movie are Uninformative (27%) and Circumlocution (16%). Abstract

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty using language in communication. The language of autism sufferers in expressive language disorders includes phonological disorders, syntactic disorders, semantic disorders, and pragmatic disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine the types of expressive language disorders used by the main character in the movie Please Stand By (2017). The method of this research was descriptive qualitative because this research describes the phenomenon of expressive language disorder in the Please Stand By (2017) movie. The source of data used in this research is the script from the movie. Once collected, the data are categorized and analyzed based on their respective categories. In this research, the researcher found that Wendy exhibited several symptoms of a type of expressive language disorder, namely semantic disorders and pragmatic disorders. This disorder can be seen from the symptoms shown by the main character through her speech.

Abstract

Humans use a variety of communication methods to convey their messages, including apologies, requests, complaints, and compliments. Different communication traits apply to men and women. There are variations in their methods of compliment expression due to the differences in their communication styles. Culture and language are inseparable. The compliment is inextricably linked to culture as a component of language. Their cultural background has a big impact on how they complimented people. The study's analysis of the judges' complimenting styles during the 2019 season of America's Got Talent is its main focus. The study examines the subject, methods, purposes, and syntactic structure of compliments. A qualitative descriptive methodology used in this study. The information was the praise the judges gave to each finalist in their comments. 72 compliments were gathered from America's Got Talent. The results indicate that male judges were more likely to give compliments than female judges. Regarding compliments, the performances of the finalists received more compliments, from male and female judges than from them on other topics. In their delivery of compliments, male judges tended to employ explicit techniques than female judges, but females were more likely to use implicit techniques. In the context of compliments, male judges typically use them to show admiration or approval for someone's work, appearance, or taste, whereas female judges typically use them to replace thanks, greetings, congratulations, and apologies. Finally, judges who were male or female were more likely to compliment others using the phrase PRO is (really) (a) ADJ NP and PRO is/are/was/were more often when making compliments. They are more likely to use impersonal compliments. In conclusion due to the topic, techniques, purpose, and grammatical structure of compliments, there are some variances and similarities in the praising behavior of men and women.

Abstract

This article is an analysis of the issue of the effect of childhood trauma in Joseph Moldover's novel entitled Every Moment After (2019). The issue at hand is the extent to which this novel depicts the consequences that arise and affect a person's personality after experiencing childhood trauma, as well as the contribution of literary elements such as characters, conflicts, and settings that rely on text-based interpretations to reveal these consequences. The goal of this analysis is to examine how well the novel depicts the effect of childhood trauma on a person's daily life and affects their mental health and mental illness. The analysis is based on Sigmund Freud's (1957, 1990) literary theory of repression and the unconscious mind. The result of the study, there are two impacts that develop after suffering childhood trauma that affect their mental health, such as anxiety and guilt. Anxiety that is owned by the character makes him afraid of dealing with other people, so it interferes with the character in interacting with other people. The guilt that the character also has makes him someone who always blames himself and even makes the character want to end his life. Therefore, this analysis shows how childhood trauma greatly affects a person's life and makes them have some mental illnesses.

Abstract

 Figurative language is a way of conveying a message using the beauty of language. The use of figurative language is usually found in casual conversation, novels, poems, song lyrics, speech, and poems. This study aims to investigate the types of figurative language in selected children’s poetry compiled by Sylvia M. Vardell (2020). This research focused on the types of figurative language and the meaning of those figurative lines. The method of this research is the descriptive qualitative method.  The object of this research is the figurative lines from selected 5 poems with family and friends theme. The researcher also made a conclusion about the most frequent types at the end. To achieve the goal of this research, the researcher employed the theory from Laurence E. Rozakis (1995) about the types of figurative language. Thus, from 43 data, the findings show that there are 12 occurrences of hyperbole, 18 occurrences of metaphor, 1 occurrence of simile, 2 occurrences of ambiguity, 5 occurrences of personification, 3 occurrences of synecdoche, and 2 occurrences of allegory. The researcher finds a conclusion about the most dominant type in this research, which is metaphor.

Abstract

Figurative language uses words in unconventional ways, deviating from their usual meaning and order. This study focuses on symbolic language in Islamic song lyrics, specifically those by Irfan Makki from Palestine. It aims to analyze the different types of figurative language and their significance in the lyrics. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research centers on metaphorical phrases in Makki's Islamic song lyrics. By using H. M. Abrams' (1999) theory on figurative language types, the research identifies 3 instances of hyperbole, metaphor, and personification, 2 instances of metonymy and symbol, and 1 instance each of allusion, irony, and simile among the 15 data samples. The most prominent types found are hyperbole, metaphor, and personification.

Abstract

Picture books as a discourse combine both verbal and visual in order to deliver the event of the story. This research aims to analyze how attributes of masculinity were presented in picture books. The verbal text and visual illustration is analyzed in six picture books which are Tom the Banana Seller, Magozwe, and Simbegwire. The visual analysis applied the narrative process of representational meaning by Kress and Van Leeuwen, while the verbal analysis applied the experiential functions of systemic functional linguistics experiential function by Halliday. The data used in this research were the illustration and narration text which contain attributes of masculinity. The methodology applied in this research is descriptive qualitative. Multimodal analysis is defined as an analysis technique which focuses on analyzing in more than one mode. The results in this research show there are 14 illustrations and 17 narration texts that contain the attributes of masculinity. The dominant narrative process used to present the attribute of masculinity is actional transactional process. While the dominant experiential functions used to present the attribute of masculinity is material process.

Abstract

Voice is a firm sign of self-assurance and authenticity. To inspire young women all across the world as positive role models, it is crucial to address the perspectives of young female. Young female has the power to set their own objectives, make their own decisions, and put their ambitions and decisions into action. Discussions about The Hunger Games novel related to the issue of gender, politics, power and identity. This study aims to determine how the topic of female agency was expressed in Suzanne Collins' novel The Hunger Games (2008). The protagonist character who is making an attempt to overcome injustice, the power domination, and become a great person in the future is referred to as having female voice. The Marxist-feminisim theory put forward by Karl Marx serve as the foundation for this analysis. The theory's application is based on an interpretation of the novel's text and context. The novel's quotation is the source for the information. This study used content analysis and descriptive research methods. The study's findings demonstrate how women's characters shows her voice in Voicing the Injustice System, Voicing the Power Domination and the Artfulness of the Authority

Abstract

The goal of this study is to examine the adverse childhood that the protagonist of Toni Morrison's book "God Help the Child" had to deal with. There is evidence that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can cause anxiety and depression. In this case, adolescents are more likely to feel anxiety and depression. This is the result of an adolescent having a mental health issue. . Adversity in adolescents has a significant impact on short and long-term outcomes. Since she was a child, the character has gone through harsh experiences. Felitti's theory of adverse childhood (2018) is relevant to this analysis. This theory is based on how the text has been interpreted and how the novel is being read. Through the use of quotations in the book, information is gathered. Sentences and paragraphs make up the data that was gathered. The results of the study show that the characters who face adverse childhood experiences can be seen through: (1) the main character has different skin colors at birth from his parents so that his parents do not accept him, (2) the main character gets various treatments that lead to the adverse childhood experiences he gets from their environment and parents. Therefore, the various bad treatment received by the main character is the main issue of adverse childhood experiences in the novel.
