Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of PORPE Method in comprehending narrative reading text of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The selected sample was X OTKP 1. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design for one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using test on narrative text. The test this research was multiple choice test consisted of four option (A/B/C/D) The result of the study was found that the mean score of the pre-test was 68.64 while the post-test was 75.61 Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of PORPE Method in comprehending narrative reading text of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect in students’ achievement before and after being thought by PORPE Method. It can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, teachers are suggested to use PORPE Method as one of the alternative method in improving students’ reading comprehension especially in comprehending narrative texts.    Key Words: Effect, PORPE method, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out and analyze the students’ difficulties in writing recount text at the first-year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru. The population of this research were the first-year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru. The sample of this research was X ADP class, consist of 30 students who have been selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test. The writing test were analyzed using ESL Profile Composition by Jacob (1981) through three raters. There are five aspects have been analyzed: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The findings of the research revealed that students got fair to poor and very poor level in content aspect, good to average and fair to poor level in organization and vocabulary aspects, and fair to poor level in language use and mechanics aspects. As the result of the research, it found that students have the difficulties in writing recount text for each aspects of writing especially in content, language use and mechanics aspects.Key Word: Analysis, Difficulties, Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study was conducted by using One-Group Pretest-Posttest design to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using Think-Pair-Share strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 10 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The sample of the research was 37 students of class VIII-8 and obtained by using cluster sampling technique. The result of the data analysis showed that mean scores of the pre-test was 64.66 and the mean score of the post-test was 73.78. In other words, the mean scores of the post-test is higher than the pre-test and it’s gained score was 9.12. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (10.488 > 2.028) at significant level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Hence, there was a significant effect of Think-Pair-Share strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 10 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts.Key Words: Effect, Think-Pair-Share Strategy, Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a correlationbetween vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the fifth semester students of EnglishDepartment Universitas Riau. The population is the fifth semester students of EnglishDepartment Universitas Riau. The sample was chosen by using cluster randomsampling and class A is used as the sample. Multiple choice test was used to know thestudents' vocabulary mastery and a writing essay test was used to know the studentswriting ability. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product MomentCorrelation. The result of the correlation and coefficient was 0.574, it can be confirmedthat the two variables have a “Mediocre Correlation” based on the interpretation bySugiyono (2017). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In conclusion,there was a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of thefifth semester students of English Department Universitas Riau with mediocre level. Theobtained determination coefficient (R square) is 0.330 or 33%. This means thatvocabulary clarifies only 23% toward writing ability. While the rest 67% (100%-33%)is probably due to other factors which are not involved in this research's variables.Key Words: Correlation, Vocabulary Mastery, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the writing ability of the third year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kuras. The population of this research is all the third year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kuras. The number of sample is 60 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was writing test and scored by three raters. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability, such as very poor, poor, average, good, and excellent. Based on the findings of this research, it was found that the students’ writing ability was in good level with the average score 74.12. In conclusion the third year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kuras have a good ability in writing application letter.Key Words: Writing’ Ability, Application Letter

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out the extent of the second year students’ foreign language anxiety of speaking English of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. This is a descriptive research that has only one variable applied. In conducting this research, there were 45 samples selected, using convenience sampling technique. A set of questionnaire was used to collect the data adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). There are two kinds of data that were analyzed in this research: primary data which are the students’ questionnaires and secondary data deriving from speaking scores from the English teacher. The result of the students’ questionnaire responses shows a mean score of 2.91, indicating a medium level of anxiety, whereas the students’ speaking scores indicating a good level with a mean score of 83. The results show that there is a tendency that students’ speaking scores decreases as their anxiety level increases.Keywords: Foreign Language Anxiety, Speaking Scores

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out types of errors made by the first year students of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in writing recount text. This is a descriptive research The participants of this research were 60 students of class X Science 10 and X Social 2 of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. The students were selected to be the sample using cluster sampling technique. The writer collected the data by using using writing test which the topic given is “Unforgettable Experience”. The result of this research showed that the students committed error into four types: error of omission, error of addition, error of formation, and error of ordering. From the frequency of each error types, error of formation was the error which most frequently produced by the students. It took 71.90% of the total errors. Moreover, 19.53% errors fell into error of omission and 5.10% errors fell into error of ordering; whereas, for error of addition, it only took 3.47%Key Words: Error, Writing, Recount text.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed at finding out whether there was a significant effect of Schema Activation Strategy in comprehending Narrative Text of third-year students’ of SMP Dwi Sejahtera Pekanbaru. The research design was one group pre-test post-test design. The population was the third-year students in academic year 2018/2019. The sample was 24 students out of the population, chosen by cluster sampling. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The tests consisted of 25 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 20.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (75>60.667). The value of t-test was higher than t-table (14.922>2.07) at 5% of significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Schema Activation Strategy was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative text. There is a significant effect of Schema Activation Strategy in Comprehending Narrative Text of Third Year Students of SMP Dwi Sejahtera Pekanbaru.Keywords: Schema Activation Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the students’ ability in writing a paragraph by the second semester English Department students of Universitas Riau. The population was the second semester English Department students of Universitas Riau, they consisted of three classes: class A, class B, and class C. From 117 students of the population, class A was taken as the sample of this research consist of 39 students. Cluster random sampling was used to choose the sample. The instrument used written test in which students wrote a paragraph. Three topics were provided for students that they can choose to write a paragraph. In analyzing the data,it had been done by calculating the scores of students individually and looking for the mean scores. Based on the result, it was found that the ability of the second semester English Department students in writing a paragraph is in good category with the mean score of 68,3. However, eventhough the students writing scores is in good level, the actual of this score is not that high. This score is considered still low compare to the range from in this level (66-79). There are seven aspects of paragraph writing such as complete sentence, topic sentence, relevant details/supporting sentences, transition word&vocabulary, closing sentence, grammar, and mechanics. After analyzed the data, it was found that two aspects of paragraph writing get in high score in writng a paragraph, they are topic sentence with the mean score of 3,2 and relevant details/supporting sentence with the mean score of 3,1. On the other hand, mechanic aspect of paragraph writing have low score with the mean score of 2,6. Based on this result, it is suggested for students to improve the students’ skill in writing especially for writing paragraph and the students should do more exposure in writing a paragraph. As for the lecturers, it is better to provide more exposure student skill in writing skill by using relevant approaches and techniques to improve students' ability in writing paragraph.Key Words: Writing Paragraph, Study, Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out students’ factors and reasons of reluctance to speak English at the English Department FKIP UNRI. This is a descriptive research conducted by survey design. The instrument administered in this research was questionnaire containing 27 close-ended questions and 7 open-ended questions. The population of this research was 113 of the second semester English department students at FKIP UNRI and the sample of this research were IIB class and IIC class of second semester English Department students. The total number of students is 76 students. The collected data were analyzed using likert scale in order to know the factors and reasons of students’ reluctance to speak English. The result of data analysis showed that there are two factor of students’ reluctance to speak English. The first one is language factor which consists of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. The second one is psychological factor which consists of lack of confidence, shyness, anxiety and motivation. The reasons of students’ reluctance base on each factor are afraid of being laughed while mispronouncing, difficulty in constructing sentences and using tenses, difficulty in using exact words, afraid of losing face, afraid of being looked as foolish, peer correction and influence of friends. In conclusion, the language factor and psychological factor contribute in the students’ reluctance to speak English at English Department FKIP UNRI. The highest index percentage on pronunciation indicator indicated that the students had problem with their pronunciation in speaking English and the highest index percentage on lack of confidence indicator indicated that the students had lower self-rating in speaking.Key Words: Reluctance, Language Factor, Psychological Factor
