Abstract

This study was an experimental study with two sample groups to examine the use of stand-up comedy in learning aperceptions to increase student’s learning motivation using lecture method. The lecture method is the most widely used by lecturers to deliver the material, but this method often makes students bored and less motivated in learning. Students’ learning motivation must be built since the beginning of the class using aperceptions. Some researchers suggest that jokes and funny stories can increase students' motivation to learn. Stand-up comedy is humor performed by a monologue performer. This humor is favored by young people including students. This experimental study involved 40 students in two groups; control and experiment. The finding showed that learning aperception through stand-up comedy model in lecture method can significantly improved students’ learning motivation. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan dua kelompok sampel yang menguji penggunaan stand-up comedy dalam apersepsi pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar mahasiswa dengan metode ceramah. Metode pembelajaran ceramah adalah metode yang paling banyak digunakan oleh dosen untuk menyampaikan materi perkuliahan, tetapi metode ini seringkali membuat mahasiswa menjadi jenuh dan kurang termotivasi dalam belajar. Motivasi belajar mahasiswa harus dibangun sejak dosen melakukan apersepsi di kelas. Beberapa peneliti mengemukakan bahwa joke dan cerita lucu dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar peserta didik. Stand-up comedy adalah bentuk humor oleh satu orang penampil menggunakan monolog. Humor gaya ini saat ini sedang banyak diminati oleh kaum muda termasuk mahasiswa. Penelitian dalam bentuk eksperimen ini melibatkan 40 mahasiswa dalam 2 kelompok, kontrol dan eksperimen. menggunakan model stand-up comedy untuk menyampaikan pesan pembelajaran di dalam kela Temuan menunjukkan bahwa apersepsi pembelajaran melalui stand-up comedy dalam metode ceramah secara signifikan dapat meningkatkan minat belajar mahasiswa.

Abstract

Most students of English Education Program in STKIP PGRI Ponorogo can be considered as nontraditional students with family, work, and other life responsibilities which have many influences on their educational goals. Autonomous learning is a customized way of learning applied by individual to find out his own learning needs and learning goals, decide the most appropriate way for his own learning, as well as to monitor and evaluate the learning progress. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The primary techniques in data collection were questionnaire, and interview. In general, the most influential motivation for the students was internal motivation. Advisor’s availability, text book, internet, supportive atmosphere, self discipline, cozy and quiet place, and early morning were among the students’ choices for their autonomous learning. They frequently used music, film, video, essay, and smart phone application in their study. In general, the nontraditional students with high achievement were often felt easy to understand the material especially when it was delivered in relatively “easy” language, expressed their opinion bravely, and patient in doing their tasks. They considered friends, best friends, and lecturer as people who were capable to help them in doing autonomous learning

Abstract

Students cannot avoid making errors which might enrich learners’ knowledge in using a foreign language. Error as such a systematic deviation which occurs when the student has not learned something of the language and gets it wrong constantly, because he has not learned the correct form. However, there are some factors that cause the errors such as carelessness, first language interference, and translation. When using English in their essays writing, students might make errors in various aspects of grammar, such as tenses, aspects, word classes, word order, inflections, and punctuation. Therefore, the accuracy of using them in the writing of English sentences must be considered, especially by students who are developing writing skills in English as a foreign language. By writing English sentences according to the grammatical structure, the meaning of it will be accurate, easily understood and acceptable. This article aims to identify types of grammatical errors made by the students of English education department at STKIP PGRI Ponorogo in writing essay and find out the factors causing the students’ grammatical errors in writing essay.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis ujaran Baby Moonella yang mengandung campur kode dan alih kode di video Instagram miliknya. Ada 5 video yang dipilih dengan mempertimbangkan kecukupan representasi penggunaan alih kode dan campur kode kekinian. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dari hasil transkripsi tuturan Baby Moonella. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teori dari Hymes (1986) dan Siregar (1996) yang diadaptasi dari Hoffman. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan ada tiga jenis alih kode dan dua jenis campur kode yang digunakan Baby Monella, seperti: tag code switching, inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, intra-sentential mixings, insertion in extra-sentential mixing, dan alternation in Extra-sentential mixing. Jenis yang paling dominan digunakan dalam tutur kata Baby Moonella yaitu intra-sentential switching dan extra-sentential mixing dalam bentuk alternation. Alasan Baby Moonella melakukan pencampuran kode dan alih kode karena dia meniru apa yang dikatakan ibunya. Dia sering merasa kebingungan dengan perubahan bahasa dalam percakapan sehari-harinya. Banyak kata dalam Bahasa Inggris yang dia sendiri tidak mengetahui arti dan padanannya dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Selain itu, Baby Moonella juga sudah dibiasakan oleh orang tuanya untuk menggunakan dua bahasa dalam komunikasi sehari-hari. Kata Kunci: alih kode, campur kode, video instagram, Babby Moonella

Abstract

Verbal humor tends toexploit the linguistics aspects such as word, phrase, and sentences as the triggers of laugh. According to Berger there are eleven verbal humor techniques: bombast, infantilism, irony, misunderstanding, pun, repartee, ridicule, sarcasm, satire, sexual allusion, and outwitting. The aims of this research were to understand and to analyze humor as a part of linguistic phenomena. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research was the record of WIT program. The data were collected through documentation technique. There was only one Berger’ humor technique which was not used in WIT; sexual allusion technique. Bombast and outwitting techniques were used more, while infantilism, irony, and pun were less used in WITcomedy program

Abstract

This article is a report of Community Service Program aiming at giving understanding and learning experience to Ponorogo tourism ambassador in improving Public Speaking and English competency to promote tourism. The participants of this program are 20 finalists of Ponorogo tourism ambassador 2021. This one-day-training program is carried out in form of presenting, practicing directly, doing demonstration, and simulation. Furthermore, Public Speaking materials presented are the basic technique of Public Speaking, solving anxiety in Public Speaking, the breathing technique of Public Speaking, the vocal technique of Public Speaking, Public Speaking preparation, the opening technique of Public Speaking, the material delivering of Public Speaking, and the closing technique of Public Speaking. English materials covered greeting expressions, asking and giving information, and explaining tourism object. After the materials presentation, all the participants should get throughdirect practice on delivering Public Speaking in English about tourism. Generally, the participants are active and enthusiastic. All participants can follow and perform direct demonstration related to the materials given. There are still mistakes they have done in using grammar and pronouncing some English words. However, they show their best efforts understanding the material. At the end of this program, the participants are expected to have learning experience as one of their asset to sharpen Public Speaking ability and foreign language proficiency, especially English.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the different kinds of code switching, the factors that cause code switching, and the function of code switching as it was employed in Boy William's Di Balik Pintu vlog. The researchers used descriptive qualititave research. The findings of this study demonstrated the use of tag switching, intersentential switching, and intrasentential switching as the three types of code switching in Di Balik Pintu vlog by Boy William. The researchers found 129 data, 24 intersentential switching data, 74 intrasentential switching data, and 31 tag switching data. The results of the factors that cause code switching were 75 data, there are 34 data of speakers, 28 data of interlocutors, 7 data of situation change from formal to informal, 5 data of change discussion topic, 1 data of attendance of the third person. While for the function of code switching, there were 129 data. The researchers found 19 quotation, 12 addressee specification, 25 interjections, 14 reiterations, 22 message qualification, and 37 personalization or objectification. This research can be used to increase knowledge about code switching and as reference for the next researcher.

Abstract

The Digital Literacy-Based Marketing Workshop for UMKM entrepreneurs in Pomahan Village, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency, East Java Province is a means to practice photo and video editing skills, and use persuasive language to increase consumer’s interest for UMKM businesses. This activity aimed to make the wider and larger UMKM marketing of the village in the following year. The method of implementing this activity was participatory. The form of activity was counseling and mentoring which was divided into four sessions. The first session was counseling on the benefits of digital marketing for UMKM which included the benefits of digital marketing for UMKM. In the second session, counseling was given regarding the benefits of using persuasive language in marketing to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of UMKM products online marketing. The third session was explanation on the importance of photo and video editing in social media marketing. The fourth session was the practice and mentoring of the use of persuasive language and photo and video editing in social media marketing through Canva and Kinemaster applications. All the sessions provided understanding and experiences for tbe participants to optimize the use of persuasive language and visual elements to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of product marketing. At the end of the activity, the participants gave positive response and actively participated in all the sessions.

Abstract

When it comes to teaching students listening skills, audio-visual learning techniques are superior to audio-only ones. Therefore, YouTube becomes the primary source to get diverse and high quality videos for critical listening courses. In order to better understand the language, students would be able to connect words and images. Using interviews and observation to collect the data, this research found that using YouTube videos has a positive impact on promoting critical thinking while engaging in a critical listening course. Through 1) freeze framing and prediction; 2) repetition and role play; and 3) reproduction activities, YouTube can help students in a critical listening course develop their critical thinking skills. Further advice on how to maximize the advantages of this activity for promoting critical thinking can be found by looking into the various strategies and techniques used by educators to incorporate YouTube videos into their teaching methods.

Abstract

As the Corona virus pandemic occurs, the teaching and learning process at school runs in online. One of the teacher efforts is the use of digital tools, for example, Google Classroom, E-Learning, ThingLink, Quizizz, Quipper, and others. The function of this research is to know how the application of ThingLink is able to increase the students’ engagement get participated networked English teaching and learning during Covid-19 pandemic. The approach taken is qualitative. Observation and questionnaire were used as tools for collecting the data. The results of analysis were as follow: (1) The regular English online teaching and learning by the use of WhatsApp had some problems to the students. (2) The use of ThingLink creates enjoyable learning, managable time, accessible outside of school hours. By the use of ThingLink collaborated with WhatsApp to communicate among tutor and all pupils, made the online learning environment more vary and active. (3) The teacher uses ThingLink to Increase the students’ engagement in online English teaching and learning with steps: preparation, logging into the website, create, and share. To be concluded that the use of ThingLink can increase the students’ engagement in online English teaching and learning since the students’ perception that the use of ThingLink is very interesting, motivated, comfortable, not bored, effectively to use, and assist them to learn English either along the course or outside.
